The very definition of anticlimax. Will England rise above its heartbreaking loss and clinch a medal?
Happening simultaneously is the Copa America Final. No offense to any Argentineans reading this, but Chi-Chi-Chi, le-le-le!

Nice for the announcer to note that the 3rd place game meant so little to her that she lost her medal and doesn’t care.
Corner Stone
Can GER give enough of a shit about this game for it to matter?
Corner Stone
@raven: I rewound that part and still do not understand what her comment was supposed to mean.
raven
@Corner Stone: That it doesn’t mean shit. Some of the best Illinois High School Basketball tourney games used to be the third place games. It was a shame a team could have a great year and then lose 2 in 2 days but still.

Saw a ton of Stars and Stripes gear out on the streets and along the seawall here in Vancouver earlier today. Bodes well for a big home-crowd advantage tomorrow.
Randinho
@raven: Was that Julie Foudy who said that?
Corner Stone
Boom goes the Comcast!
raven
@Randinho: Not sure.

Germany looks to be much better positioned than the USA going forward. They have six (I think) players on their WWC team who played in either the 2012 or 2014 U-20 tournaments. By contrast, the USA has only Johnston and Brian from the 2012 team and nobody from the 2014 team. We are about to get old in a hurry.

Um, good luck with this:
It’s kind of the Land Of The Gauchos equivalent of claiming you aren’t racist as the Stars & Bars flap from your flagpole. Brief story:

Offsides?! Where’s a Mayhew when he’s needed?
Corner Stone
According to the announcing team, not even the referee officiating this game gives a shit about it.
Randinho
@Uncle Cosmo: I’m pulling for Chile simply because they have never won the Copa America. We have good friends here who are Argentine. Last year they invited us over to watch the WC championship game, but we declined as it would be the height of rudeness to pull for Germany as a guest in their house.
For what it’s worth, the last time Argentina won an international club championship that did not have an age restriction was the 1993 Copa America. A pretty long drought.
Randinho
0-0 at the half in Santiago, by the way. There should be a law that Ray Hudson, who is on BeIn Sports in the USA should be required to do all color commentary for major tournaments. Here’s a sample.
rikyrah
hope that it’s a good game. got no side to take.

Is anybody else dreading an England-Germany game settled on penalty kicks?
Corner Stone
Whooooosh!! A foot or so?
raven
That’s some snakebite shit.
Richard mayhew
Wow. The English attack is lazy as hell, I’ve seen more technically sophisticated u16 games
Corner Stone
@Richard mayhew: GER just seems a lot better and much more on the attack this whole match.
Corner Stone
Ruh roh.
Valdivia
Chile has really given the Argies a run for their money. Come on Chile!
@Randinho: I get the BeIn sports channel in Spanish and their narration & nicknames for the players are genius. Makes the game for me.
Randinho
They’re going to extra time at the Copa America.
Valdivia
@Randinho: It’s amazing to me how Messi just seems to not really show up as much when he plays with the national team no?
Randinho
@Valdivia: I would make the case that he turns supplier. Unfortunately his teammates don’t return the favor.
I have never understood the fascination with Higuaín. He has some skills, but you serve the ball up to him on a platter for him to score.
Randinho
Rather soft penalty
Mr Stagger Lee
@Valdivia: I bet the Argentines will say Messi was tired from the Champions Cup, but Argentina has crapped the bed in the Copa America, while Chile is playing their hearts out.
raven
The woman who said how little this means is now explaining how much it means.
Bill Murray
Bad miss from Schmidt for Germany
Tissue Thin Pseudonym
@Randinho: The officiating has been suspect all tournament and there have been a number that I’ve questioned today. There were a couple of times I thought Germany should have been called for a penalty with nothing, so maybe it all evens out.
At least no one has committed blatant sexual assault in this tournament.
raven
@Tissue Thin Pseudonym: When people are bitching that “the best officials” should be on these games are they talking about men?
raven
Yay!!!!
Tissue Thin Pseudonym
The English at least look like the enjoyed that.
Randinho
Congrats to England! Very happy for Laura Bassett.
Tissue Thin Pseudonym
@raven: Yes. I’d be fine with that as long as I believed that good women officials would ever be given a chance to ref at big men’s tournaments.
Steeplejack
@raven:
Somebody had a word with her.
Bill Murray
Copa to penalties
Randinho
Extra time is over in Santiago and it’s still 0-0. Penalties again. Chi Chi Chi Le Le Le!
Randinho
Back tomorrow for the final. Go USA!
Valdivia
Penalties!
@Randinho: yes he doesn’t really have who to play with.
@Mr Stagger Lee: Agree. I hope Chile do it in penalties. They deserve it.
Rob
England won, hooray!!
I’ll be waiting for the Copa final to conclude. For better or worse, I am following these matches at home on the BBC website rather than watching them in the local bar filled with holiday revelers.
Valdivia
Come on Chile!
Bill Murray
@Randinho: and Gonzalo misses badly
Randinho
And my comment about Higuaín has just been vindicated.
cmorenc
That was a really obvious, dumb, needless foul by Germany’s Kenna, especially since it was unquestionably inside the PA. Even if she thought that Sampson had her hopelessly beaten to a ball Sampson could get to before it went out over the goal line, taking a gamble that she could get away with a little momentary holding Sampson back to slow her down within the referee’s tolerance – and give her the benefit of the doubt – that was a terrible gamble to take. Her holding became so obvious that any competent referee in the world would have called that PK.
Valdivia
Oh boy. Advantage Chile.
Bill Murray
@Bill Murray: and then Bravo saves. chile need one of two to win in Santiago
Randinho
Chi Chi Chi Le Le Le!
Bill Murray
Sanchez with the cheeky winner. First win in 99 years
Valdivia
@Randinho: yay yay yay
Valdivia
@Randinho: futbol Twitter is in agreement with you.
Rob
Yay Chile!!!!!!!!

@cmorenc:
It’s always the second foul that gets called in those situations. The replay showed that as she was posting up against Kemme, Sanderson hooked her with one arm and grabbed her with the other.
Real shame for Kemme to end up as the goat, as she played brilliantly up until that point.
