From our Food Goddess, TaMara:
It’s that time again. Time to dig out the ice cream maker and try out some new recipes. I cannot express how much I love the ease of the frozen bowl style machine. No fuss, no mess.
Pictured above is this summer’s first batch, Vanilla Nut Crunch, recipe here (where there is also a bonus kitteh)
And here are four of my favorites from the past summers:
Key Lime Pie Gelato, click here for recipes and photos.
Strawberry Ice Cream, two recipes here.
Blueberry Sorbet, recipe and photos here.Chocolate-Hazelnut Gelato, really my very favorite of all the recipes, is here.
For the pet lovers, in case you missed it, Bixby needed to cool off in a cute video here. He now has his own kiddie pool in the yard because flooding the bathroom nightly was not an option.
What’s on your menu for the weekend? Getting ready the big holiday? Any favorite frozen treat recipes?
Tonight’s featured recipe is one of the most chocolaty ice creams ever. It takes a full cup of dark dutch cocoa and just enough sugar so it’s not too sweet. The ice cream scoop in the photo was my very first Kickstarter contribution. It works great on the hardest frozen ice cream with little effort. But in all honesty, I contributed because the presentation was so funny and the inventor was a riot. I <3 engineers.
Dutch Chocolate Ice Cream
1 cup dark dutch cocoa, unsweetened
2/3 cup sugar
1/2 cup lightly packed brown sugar
1/8 tsp salt
1-1/2 cups milk
3-1/4 cups heavy cream
2 tsp good quality vanilla extract
mixing bowl, ice cream freezerIn the mixing bowl, combine cocoa, sugars and salt, until well blended, add milk and use a hand mixer on low speed to combine until sugar is dissolved (about 2 minutes). Stir in cream and vanilla by hand.
Freeze according to manufacturer’s direction for your ice cream maker (for mine, I place the frozen bowl on the machine, add the paddle and the top, turn it on and then pour the ice cream mixture in while it’s turning. 30 minutes later I have ice cream).
After it has completed its freezing cycle, you usually have a soft serve consistency, you can freeze it until hard. Makes about 1-1/2 quarts.
That’s it for this week. There won’t be an exchange next week because of the holiday. I hope you have a great week and a terrific 4th! – TaMara

I stopped at a stoplight downtown, somebody asked if they could wipe clean my windshield and the next thing I know Mayor Annise Parker was asking if anyone here objected to this union?
What The Fuck just happened?

Last weekend we had milkshakes and they were delicious. May have to do that again tomorrow.

@Anne Laurie: I laughed. I actually cancelled my usual 4th plans because I have no idea how the Beast will handle the fireworks.

@Corner Stone: I believe you just got organized! Window Cleaners International Local 173, say hi to Joe Hill for me.
Anne Laurie
@TaMara (BHF): Sorry about that! — pulled the wrong “media object”. (I’m saving the cartoon for next weekend, of course… )
TaMara (BHF)
@Anne Laurie: LOL. Well I liked it there. Thanks for posting the recipes!
TaMara (BHF)
@efgoldman: Did you see they came out with an I Dough, I Dough flavor for today?

I love that Bixby in the tub video. He’s so cute. Please put up a Bixby in his baby pool vid, when you have it.
Helen
@Corner Stone: On the last thread I almost wrote; ‘Cornerstone; wherefore out thou”… Hey what?
BillinGlendaleCA
@Corner Stone: Did you get gay married?
BillinGlendaleCA
@Helen: You must have said ‘Cornerstone’ three times, he’s a bit like Beetlejuice.
Catherine D.
Maida Heatter’s chocolate ice cream and hot fudge recipes (from her chocolate cookbook) win hands down. Her chocolate madeleines are pretty damned good too.
Corner Stone
@BillinGlendaleCA: Hell no! I would never do that again!
Elizabelle
OT, but I liked these wildlife sorta selfies taken on the Serengeti. From the Guardian.
Animal candids.
Helen
@BillinGlendaleCA:
I know, right? And here he is.

I hate to say it, but I feel sometimes like the Left cannot take yes for an answer. nothing here, totally other site, but goddamn, just revel in the goodness once in a year or so.

I make several “ice cream” treats for my vegan friends. These are ice pops made from peaches roasted in white balsamic drizzle, mixed with fresh chiffonade of basil, layered between roasted ripe bananas mixed with cinnamon and cocoa powder. It was quite good.
Then there’s the roasted sweet potato & rum “ice cream”, which I’ve made for my trainer for when she’s not competing. You can also make this one with sweet squashes but I like to add mix-ins like shaved dark chocolate and ginger chips. No sense being too healthy.
This also goes great between cookies for an “ice cream” sammich.

Andrew Sullivan blogs, and now Sarah P&T is back to celebrate with us too.
Memorable, memorable day.

@Elizabelle:
although people keep yelling at me for pointing this out, yeah, andrew sullivan was there a long time ago calling for gay marriage.
I know I wasn’t. and he was. and he was right.
Helen
@Little Boots: LOLWUT? We are HAPPY

I am personally a fan of Nigella’s no-churn ice creams. Mostly because I don’t have a machine:

@Elizabelle: SISTER SARAH??? WHERE???
Little Boots
@Helen:
you are, somebody are determined to be unhappy.
it’s this thing that sometimes drives me nuts on the left.
Little Boots
did I somebody are determined?
some people are determined.
Little Boots
@Little Boots:
goddamit.
Elizabelle
@Little Boots: I am kind of hoping Andrew comes back more for blogging. Does not have to be obsessive about it, but so much has happened since he “retired”, and one wonders what he would say about some of it.
Little Boots
@Elizabelle:
I do too. he was so wrong about some things, but so right about some things.
I don’t know. we can be nuts about everything.
Elizabelle
@Yatsuno: She be on the very next thread, and a mite lonely.
It haz been a very big day.
Almost all happiness, but, at the end of the day, Senator Clementa Pinckney and 8 other fine souls are no longer alive, and that tempers it … feeling the loss.
Helen
@Little Boots: That’s OK sweetie.
OT Everyone look at my friend Suzy Orman on CNN.
Elizabelle
@Little Boots: And he had pets. Counts for a lot.
Am glad he left his blog up.
Little Boots
@Helen:
HATE bad grammar.
Little Boots
@Elizabelle:
me too, have very mixed feelings about that man, but he definitely has earned his say.
Little Boots
plus, pets, always a plus.
ruemara
@efgoldman: right, no milk. and since I now hang with the bodybuilding, fitness crowd, they need low sugar, macro rich treats.
Elizabelle
@Little Boots: You never knew if you were going to get truly interesting posts or staggering obtuseness. But not boring. And some great links. Hat’s off.
Little Boots
@Elizabelle:
yeah, good in his way. oh so pompous and self-important. but sometimes .. absolutely right.

@Yatsuno: You are personally a fan of Nigella.

@Omnes Omnibus:
RUT ROH!
Elizabelle
@Little Boots: We can be nostalgic because he (and crew) are not putting up 25 posts a day, 4 or 5 of which have us grating our teeth …
Little Boots
@Helen:
what, this is not the apocalypse.
I swear.
Little Boots
@Elizabelle:
true, still like him for gay marriage. still like him for that.
I’m sorry, it was a rare thing that anyone gave a damn then.
Helen
@Little Boots:
Scooby disagrees.
Little Boots
@Helen:
I swear there is nothing … ignore this mask, it means nothing!!!
Yatsuno
@Omnes Omnibus: She’s a bit of a gay icon. Not to mention none of her recipes have ever failed me.
Little Boots
@Yatsuno:
but does she dance?
Helen
@Little Boots:
You know what I hate? When the local news says “Oh it will get better. 85 degrees is on it’s way”
No No No. 70 degrees is JUST FINE.
That’s what I hate.
ThresherK (GPad)
Thinking of the Cuisinart ice cream maker. Is it any good?
Omnes Omnibus
@Yatsuno: I have never really understood who becomes a gay icon or why, but then that’s not really my department. More power to you, etc.
ETA: When are you going to find a nice boy, settle down, and get married? We’re worried about you.
TaMara (BHF)
@ThresherK (GPad): That’s what I have and I really like it. You can get one freezer bowl or two (my friends have the two bowl model and keep one in the freezer at all times.) Can’t beat it for ease of use. And the recipes are ok, too.
WaterGirl
@Omnes Omnibus: I laughed out loud. First one of the morning. thanks for that.

@WaterGirl: One does one’s best to please.
