In tragically congruent news, Fox reports that second-gen Quiverfull ‘patriarch’ Josh Duggar has resigned from the Family Research Council.

Good lord, these people are irritating.
In other news, I submitted an application to adopt a friend for Iggy, which was approved this evening. I thought there’d be a home visit, but evidently not.
I can pick her up tomorrow, but I’ve emailed the foster to see about bringing Iggy to meet her tomorrow before we go ahead. I hope it all works out. Funny, I keep hearing horror stories about impossible rescue groups that don’t adopt to anyone; both of my rescue experiences have been the opposite. “You want a dog? Here you go!” Whoa, hang on, don’t you want to check– “Nope! Have a dog!” Don’t I need to get– “Take the goddamn dog!”
Anyway. Scroll down to see Sandy.

Duggar: “I understood that if I continued down this wrong road that I would end up ruining my life.”
yeah…I guess the lives of his victim were just…meh?
Oh and I’m finding it interesting how media are headling Duggar’s “response” against allegations…not mentioning that in his “response” he basically ADMITTED the allegations are true.
So that no longer makes them “allegations”, amirite?
Oh and the defenders are trying to claim “youthful discovery”…notice the police report said the some of “allegations” were FELONY level allegations…so yeah, not just “flashing ur junk” to some random crazy cousin

@Karen in GA: I kind of liked Luther. But the Cocker I grew up with was more than a bit a butthead to other dogs, especially males (Hell, he was a Regency buck, who picked a fight with anyone who looked at him funny (shepherds and dobies included (brave or dumbass is your choice))). I still love that guy.
Sandy is cute as a button.
PurpleGirl
@Karen in GA: Aw, she’s cute. Iggy and Sandy together is getting into cute overload territory. Much luck with the doggies liking each other.
The young woman (Cassie) who has the no-kill shelter in CT has taken on two cats who are bonded. They are about 5 years old. She wants to rehome them together. The background story is a tearjerker: A day or two ago, Cassie was asked to talk with a patient at the hospital where she works. (Cassie is a respiration therapist.) She went to see the patient, who was very concerned about what would happen to his two cats. The medical staff expected him to be going to a rehab facility. Cassie assured him that she would take the two cats and promised him she would find a home for them together — she would not split them up. Well, he passed away overnight after speaking with Cassie. The medical staff really thought he’d be going into rehab. Apparently, once he was no longer worried about the cats, he could let go.

@PurpleGirl: Rep. Henry Hyde was the one whose five-year “youthful indiscretion” (when he was in his 40s) came back to bite him while he was making bank off publicly deploring Bill Clinton over his Oval Office indiscretion.
Years later, Dubya was the one who successfully dismissed allegations about drunken misbehavior & illicit drug use extending into his 40s as “When I was young & irresponsible, I was young & irresponsible.”
Today’s Republicans, forever defining deviancy down!

So in 2002 when Duggar was 14, the age of his sisters ranged from 4-12. Police report was 2006, when he was 17, he was 14, 5 girls, some of which were his sisters.
Again, aged 4-12. So again I ask is there an age of the victims where the “youthful indiscretion” defenders WON’T defend?
I see some RWNJ trying to compare both Mike Brown’s juvie records and that Lena Dunham book excerpt…all to try to defend this piece of shit and his piece of shit parents.
ETA: thx for that link. It a very good write up and it’s def how I understand the situation as I know it.

Oh man, the Duggar thing is a mess. “He was sent to a program” except he wasn’t, it turns out later in the article. Just sent away to do manual labor.
Newsflash, people: manual labor and Christian repentance isn’t likely to work. Pretending it was some sort of treatment program makes me wonder if there’s a deeper system of abuse happening in that family. Eep.
Valdivia
@Omnes Omnibus:
maybe it’s a Texas thing?

Karen in GA
@Suzanne: Who knew that people who brag about how sexually repressed they are would end up being amoral pervs? Color me stunned.
ETA: It’s a cult. They’ll tolerate anything rather than admit anyone outside the cult might be right.
Suzanne
@lamh36: Calling it an “indiscretion” makes it sound like he had a one-time hookup with a girl at a club or something, not repeatedly molesting children, including his sisters.
Taking bets on how much mental health care the Duggars got for their daughters afterward…… I’m going to go with HAHAHAAAHAHAHAAAAAAAREYOUFUCKINGKIDDING.
Omnes Omnibus
@Valdivia: Perhaps, but aside from an hello hug or handshake (the hug being fairly recent) we don’t touch others like that. It’s, if I may seem old fashioned, unseemly.
Physical touching can be a wonderful thing and should be indulged in as often as one can, but in the right way. And, damn, the Merkel Touch is not the right way.

It was the “Touch” part of the title that was bothering me.

Valdivia
@Omnes Omnibus:
Being an immigrant from a culture where people stand closer than they do here, and might often touch each other on the arm while in conversation I had to learn that personal space here is very different and if you don’t respect it people misinterpret it. But that is very different than simply sauntering over to someone in public and giving them a massage just because. Unseemly is a perfect word for it.
A funny story: A couple of years ago I went on a horrible blind date with a Federalist who was also a raging neocon (I was set up by a family friend). Aside from everything that was going wrong I, totally by accident touched his arm with my hand and he jumped out of his chair with a look of horror. As totally uninterested as I was it was kind of shocking to see his reaction. Also, I was tempted to say: slow down buddy if I had meant to touch you, you would have known.
Little Boots
@Omnes Omnibus:
uh huh.
Little Boots
@Valdivia:
not to pick on you, in any way, but did this person say I’m a Federalist?
Valdivia
@Little Boots:
He didn’t have to say it. I read some of his articles in Lexis and saw all the accolades The Federalist Society gave him. I also asked a law professor friend of mine who said: yes I know him, he’s hard core Federalist Society. I do my due diligence ahead of blind dates :)
Little Boots
@Valdivia:
oh, god, the federalist society. damn. yeah, run, which, apparently, you did.

I can see why the Family Research Council hired that Duggar. He had experience.
opiejeanne
@PurpleGirl: In doing some research online for family stuff I stumbled onto some Reno newspapers that mentioned the doings of my great grandmother’s brother, who owned a hotel there. Most of the mentions were ads for his hotel, a notice that he had sold the place, a notice when he took it back from the buyers, his name on a list of mining claims that had not paid their annual fees, and then his son started to appear in stories. The articles included a robbery by “Indians” while the son was managing on night shift, several drunk and disorderly arrests of this son, (there were other sons but their shenanigans didn’t make the paper), fights in public with his wife, etc.
Then one day Jr ran off with $1500 from the hotel safe and got about 10 miles out of town before they caught his carriage, and there was a big article about all of the fuss, but the best part of the article was the editorializing about how they had had such great hopes for this young man and that they hoped this was just a youthful indiscretion, the youth in question being 45 years old.

@BillinGlendaleCA:
yes I think it might be, two faces of the same coin.
@Omnes Omnibus:
in general it has not been a huge problem. I have dated men who have been as short as 5’8 and didn’t even register the height difference most of the time. For some men it seems to be an issue, the height thing, which then turns into a control issue. Now I know to walk away when they start telling me to not wear heels.
El Caganer
So the takeaway is – what? When you’re in a hole, stop Duggaring?
Little Boots
one takeaway.
Omnes Omnibus
@Valdivia: My grandfather was about an inch shorter that his wife. Grandma always wore flats. Moi, I am my height. So be it. I was also born in the year in which I was born.
Also too, Francoise Hardy is taller than I am.
Valdivia
@Omnes Omnibus:
the funny thing is that I tend to wear flats mostly, but being a girly girl I like a heel from time to time. When even that is off the realm of possibility because it makes someone insecure, in my experience it’s just the begining of other things being a source of conflict and a problem.
Hardy! You dug that one out from the retro treasure vault. I approve, beaucoup.
Omnes Omnibus
@Valdivia: Weirdly, as an average-ish height,, personally don’t care about height. Actually, walking into a bar or club with a woman than one should be no less than a neutral.
Valdivia
@Omnes Omnibus:
that makes sense. I’m aware of height only when I am towering over people :)
When I was in Finland last summer I felt short, that was weird.
And now I am going to say buenas noches because Neruda, Borges, tango and Pinochet wait for me tomorrow morning.

In this case, nothing. Nothing goes through his mind. He can do anything he wants, so he does without thinking about it. Presumably there’s a trail of women subjected to much worse, and he never thought it was an issue.
That, or the other option is he’s a sexual abuse survivor himself, and has wildly messed up ideas about what ‘casual affection’ means. Heck, could be both.
As for the Duggars, assume that all men and most women in Quiverfull are abusers. Quiverfull is abuse. When there’s extra layers on top, who’s surprised?
@lamh36:
The media are mostly old white rich men who’ve demonstrated clearly they’re ‘moderate’ Republicans. They don’t give a rat’s ass about the problems of anyone but old white rich men. They probably even sympathize with treating women as objects. They just don’t feel the need to go out of their way to make it a public political issue, either.

@Valdivia:
Speaking personally, I had real problems with this when I was a young man, in part because I’d been, in hindsight, repeatedly sexually harassed in junior high school by mean girls who used unwanted ironic flirtation as a way of belittling dorky boys. It made me extremely wary of anything that looked like a sign of actual attraction. Took me years to get over.
Shana
@lamh36: Haven’t read through the whole thread yet, but today’s (Friday’s) WaPo says they’re getting married.
tbone
So is molesting your sisters now considered family research?
fuckwit
@Matt McIrvin: For me it was sales and marketing, and sex-appeal/flirtation used so freely in advertising and TV and the like. To this day, whenever an attractive woman flirts with me, I’m unable to accept that she might be actually attracted to me, instead I immediately wonder what she’s trying to sell me. Of course, 99% of the time she probably is trying to sell me something, but there have been cases where I found out way too late that, no, she really was trying to flirt with me. I call this “the waitress factor”: no dude, she doesn’t want you, just just wants a nice tip.
This is an interesting little nasty side-effect of patriarchy: a structural power imbalance can make meaningful connection between people and even sometimes communication impossible.
