I am sadder than I should be by the end of the Colbert Report, but the new show is going to be excellent, I’m guessing. Larry Wilmore always cracks me up.
Long day today- still sort of feeling the effects of the weekend cold I had, and I had to run around and do a bunch of errands. Picked up a new set of box springs for the bed, because they had been damaged during the move four or five years ago. Since then, it has slowly been deteriorating, and I noticed that my bed was listing like a sinking ship. It was made worse because I would slide to the left a little while sleeping, the dogs would move to get close to me, I’d slide more left, rinse and repeat until my left arm and left leg were dangling off the bed.
Come to think of it, sleeping on a sinking ship is a pretty solid metaphor for my entire existence.

Well, GOS seems to have fallen off the bed.

Glad you got the bed situation rectified. You and the dogs deserve it.
Colbert has brought the funny for years, proving satire isn’t quite dead yet. Thank God for him. I’ll have to invest in some best-of DVDs or something.

“I am sadder than I should be by the end of the Colbert Report’
Anyone who appreciates satire at the highest level should be deeply saddened by the Colbert Report ending. We’ll never see the likes of Stephen Colbert’s character again. He will be sorely missed.

My life changed for the better when we bought a memory foam mattress. The animals like it, too.

Damn, what a strange mix shared the stage, quite the honor for Colbert.

I just splurged for a latex mattress to go with my latex topper and latex pillows. Nothing will ever make me go back to a traditional mattress/pillows.
I’m exhausted. It’s been a weird 7 – 10 days. Someone I used to work with (who now occasionally works for me) and I are thinking of buying the old company we used to work at for years. I can’t tell if we are crazy or shrewd. Luckily, it’s probably a few months away, so we can put some real thought into it.
Redshift
It’s bittersweet; definitely the end of an era.
I like Wilmore, too, and I hope he’ll be good, but he’ll definitely be different.
Mike E
@Tone In DC: Not only that, but he did it solo…Jon Stewart has an ensemble to bring the funny but also to pace himself. Colbert is such a singular talent, he had to go Patty Duke in order to pull off his level of satire.
We may never see his like again.
Sasha
Ave atque vale, Stephen.

@Kitty: Aah! Thanks.

He will be sorely missed. He was a satirist at the highest level for over a decade, just brilliant and damn impressive.
I am really excited to see what he brings to Late Night though. I think he’ll be stupendous and surprise many folks.
Anne Laurie
Is this a joke of some kind, or did the last farewell get really weird?…
Karen in GA
I recorded it; I’ll watch with the hubby tomorrow.
Strange thing just now. Outside walking Iggy, I look up, and the stars, rather than looking like the usual pinpoints, looked like short lines — as if each star was actually three pearls strung together. Some weird kind of atmospheric distortion?
Elizabelle
K-Thug was up there with Colbert. Cool.
Librarian
@Anne Laurie: Henry Kissinger was there, as was David Gregory.
lamh36
@Anne Laurie: there was a stage full or peoole who were guest on the show over the years.
I notice alot of actors (Patrick Stewart, James Franco) and other newsreaders and news makers ( Sullivan, Olbermann, Couric, Stone freaking Philips) And of course John Stewart
Anne Laurie
@Librarian: Ah. That would explain it, then, thanks.
sharl
@Anne Laurie: I didn’t see the Colbert finale, but having followed Tim Shorrock’s stuff (off-and-on) for awhile, I’m sure Librarian @16 is correct.
Elizabelle
@lamh36:
James Franco has some holes in his schedule this week.
I would guess Sony will release “The Interview” in theatres maybe in February or so, if they’ve nailed down who precisely were the hackers … seems there would be an audience for it.
ETA: Chris Rock was on Jon Stewart tonight, proclaiming his new movie extremely “North Korea friendly.”

I can’t believe a cat would sit still through this. Very calm kitteh.

I had tears when they were singing and as he thanked everyone in the sleigh. I’m so glad they didn’t “kill” his character. Maybe he will return someday.

” I’d slide more left, rinse and repeat until my left arm and left leg were dangling off the bed. ”
I deeply appreciate the sacrifices Cole makes for this blog. But I have to ask, what kind of Cole disaster story is that? He didn’t fall out of bed, didn’t result in a doctor visit, his animals didn’t maul him, he didn’t step in anything nasty. No major damage to the house. No disasters moving new springs into the place.
I am glad things went as well as they did. Just saying that I expected worse when I started reading. Much worse.
Citizen Alan
I wish the last Colbert episode could have ended with Stephen faking his death and then regenerating into Larry Wilmore.

I have the show on DVR and will see it this weekend. It has to have been hard to maintain the level of comedy they did for 9 years, he had a great staff and I hope they all do well after this too. It will be interesting to see how the does as himself in the chat format. He could be very very good, particularly if he makes the guests the point of the show instead of himself (he would be the only one on late night doing that). I enjoy Wimor, I bought his book “I’d Rather Have Casinos” and found it entertaining and thought provoking. That said I do not see that sort of work as sustainable. I hope I am wrong but I am doubtful.
This is the best Colbert, worth the 20 minutes.

Was not thinking, used a no-no word and I assume I am stuck in moderation hell forever.

@Mike E: Oh sure we’ll see his like again, maybe even better. After all there was Groucho and look all of the excellence that followed him.
(Can you imagine Groucho roasting GDub? Makes me smile to think of it!)
Of course every comedian is unique. But, always, the best is yet to come.

Stephen Colbert really is a national treasure. I am hoping he doesn’t bomb with Late Night. I hope his humor translates to Late Night. I don’t know how you beat the Stewart/Colbert combo.
Central Planning
I just finished watching the finale. I think it went as well as it could. I saw Dean Kamen in the finale, and it looked like a famous country singer (no idea who) was coaching him with the words.
I’m a little sad about him leaving but excited about Larry Wilmore’s show and seeing Stephen when we comes back next year.
raven
So Stipe wasn’t on the finale I guess?
eta , oh, I see he was.
NotMax
Suspiciously quiescent tonight.

Just think. Someday hipsters will scoff at people who watch Late Night with Colbert (or whatever they end up calling it) with a “yeah, but he was really funny when he did the Colbert Report. He sold out man.” Just like people do now with Letterman and his old NBC show and his daytime show.

Marc Wilmore, Larry’s brother, and a writer for the Simpsons, is pretty conservative, so …

@Anne Laurie:
That is not a joke, but no spoilers so you have to watch.

Well, I’ll miss the Darlene Love Christmas performance on Letterman, but Colbert should be great there.

Twas a good finale.
For everyone but Grimmy.

@Anne Laurie: Kissinger was there.
Barbara
@dave: I certainly recognized Kissinger (clapping along to the music, off the beat) and (sorry, spoiler) Big Bird, along with I guess about 20% of the chorus. I really need a cheat sheet for the rest of them.
Oh, to have been a fly on the wall of the green room…

C0le the 0ne man mindless m0b sure knows how to get stuff done. Car gets stuck in a field. Eh…just leave it there and get another one. Box spring damaged in a move and he’s was all over that problem….5 years later. No stopping him once he sets his mind to it.
Radio One
@FridayNext: I’ve never heard many people complaining about Letterman. I think Colbert will be fine on the Late Show.
My Truth Hurts
@Anne Laurie:
Henry Kissinger was there. I was disappointed by that myself but they must have sent a cattle call out to every guest they ever had. If you are in NYC and want an appearance fee stop by Thursday night…
My Truth Hurts
I also really liked how he exclaimed “That was fun!” during the closing. That’s a man who knows what he has and how to appreciate it. He is also one of the last true entertainers. He can sing, he can dance, he can act, tell jokes, make speeches, do interviews… most professionals are one trick ponies, they act OR sing OR dance OR tell jokes but not Colbert, he can do it all.
