We’re sending Kay to Netroots Nation since I have a ticket I can transfer to her and she will actually go to the meetings and report coherently on them. Right now, we just need a little scratch to pay for food, gas and lodging, so please hit the paypal link.
When the specific panels become available, please peruse them and maybe we can convince Kay to hit one that a lot of us are interested in and would her to attend.
Ronzoni Rigatoni
OKOKOK I could onny afferd 10 bux, but it might buy her a coke somewheres. Go Kay!
WereBear
Will she wear pants? I understand that was an issue last year.
Pogonip
I ain’t got any extra scratch, sorry, but I wish her a great trip.
Also, happy Father’s Day to all you dads. We are getting my father some help for Father’s Day; the old folks’ service called him and in the next two weeks will send someone out to appraise the situation. Endless gratitude to everyone who offered suggestions.
Pogonip
@WereBear: You can also donate to buy her pants.
Suffern ACE
Yeah, sure. Send Kay to Detroit. (Detroit in July. Some people have all the luck).
WereBear
@Pogonip: Hey, it’s Netroots Nation. I believe they are clothing optional.
jl
Not sure whether I did it right. I appear to have bought one item of John G. Cole. Is that, like, some kind of free gift that we get for a contribution?
And, if this is really a full service blog, shouldn’t we have both coherent and incoherent reports?
So Cole has to attend too.
And the commenters standing by in case an emergency care package of, I dunno, say pants, were needed, that would improve reader engagement.
sharl
Done. Kay comes through every time.
Pogonip
@jl: If you make a big enough contribution, you will be allowed to return him.
Pogonip
Why are they having this in Detroit? Is it because hardly anybody can afford to drive there, so traffic will be light?
Dee Loralei
I’m in!
@sharl: Was great meeting you Wednesday! We’re finally back home.YAY I so enjoyed my time in DC. I am seriously coming back sometime. Next time, I’ll give more notice.
EA: When is Netroots? I mean I know July, but why Detroit in July. Is anyone else going?
Suffern ACE
@Pogonip: $10 plus a $250 restocking fee. Do you know how many packing peanuts it takes to ensure he isn’t damaged during shipment?
kindness
You don’t have a donate button set up? What? I have to go through the regular donate button?
MazeDancer
Wonderful news. Kay is a great writer, full of insight. And if she’s willing to go, lucky us.
There is a “note to seller” link to click on PayPay. You can identify your contribution as “For Kay to go to Netroots”, should you so choose.
Anne Laurie
Oops — that’s also the weekend of Detcon 1, the Detroit ‘national’ SF convention for fans who can’t make it to the WorldCon in London this year!
Not that I was planning on attending either event, but will it complicate the hotel / attendance situation?
Or maybe some people will consider it a twofer?
nellcote
Are Malkin and her flying monkeys holding their annual tandem con. this year too?
SiubhanDuinne
I would love to contribute to this cause, but I had a couple of bad experiences with PayPal a few years ago and will not put myself through yet another registration. What alternatives are there? I can send a check (yes, an actual hand-written paper check mailed in an envelope with a stamp on it), or if there is an option to use Visa or even the Amazon account, I’m good with that. But no PP, sorry.
Regardless (to borrow a recently-prominent word), I can’t think of anybody better suited to attend and participate in Netroots. Kay is one of your most brilliant finds, John Cole.
sharl
@Dee Loralei: It was a pleasure meeting you too, Dee Loralei! along with the other folks there. I’m kind of a hermit by nature, so it takes a bit for me to work up going to even such an informal event as that. I’m glad I followed through for a change; it was a nice evening.
By the way, did the meet-up on Thursday ever happen? I saw some comments alluding to it, but don’t recall any post-meetup reports.
jl
@SiubhanDuinne: When I donate through PayPal, I always do it as a guest and use a credit card. The Paypal link has that option.
JPL
@SiubhanDuinne: This.
AxelFoley
What did she do to deserve this punishment?
Anne Laurie
@SiubhanDuinne:
Have to agree, even if he did spend a good 18 months resisting my earnest “suggestions” that he give her the dashboard keys!
jl
Cole should go.
He might be interested in this training session. Or maybe he could get a few minutes to show how he does it.
You have 30 minutes to respond online. Now what?
Training; Fri, 07/18/2014 – 04:30pm, 330 B
Dee Loralei
@sharl: If it did, I wasn’t there. You need to hang out with those folks more, they were fun an funny and sooooo smart. I’m glad you decided to de-hermitify yourself too.
SiubhanDuinne
@jl:
@JPL:
Oh, thanks! I’ll try that.
sharl
@MazeDancer: Hmm, maybe I should have included a comment with my payment… but I didn’t.
If no other contribution campaigns are active here at the moment, I’m gonna assume my bucks will be going to Kay’s trip. If John Cole or Anne Laurie (or whomever) know otherwise, please give the word, and I’ll send follow-up e-mails to one or both of you.
SiubhanDuinne
@Anne Laurie:
Ah, then it’s you we should be thanking! I’ll do it: thank you, Anne Laurie, for identifying Kay as a valued and important addition to the BJFP roster.
SiubhanDuinne
Okay, I’m in for $25. Try not to spend it all in one place.
Anne Laurie
@SiubhanDuinne: Heck, getting Kay (and, later, Soonergrunt) onto the front page may be my proudest contributions here!
Now I gotta go wrestle the PayPal daemons, even tho I’m almost certainly not going to be in Detroit I look forward to reading Kay’s reports…
SiubhanDuinne
@Anne Laurie:
You are responsible for Soonergrunt, too? You have a fine eye as a scout. Thank you!
P.S. I enjoy your posts, too. Some people may complain about cut-and-paste, but over the years you’ve directed me to many excellent sites I would not otherwise have seen.
HinTN
For those who don’t know, Detroit in July it’s glorious weather. Low 70’s and generally blue skies. Not that you would care if you are in meetings all day but maybe some playing of hooky can arranged.
schrodinger's cat
@SiubhanDuinne: I too have had two bad experiences with PayPal, they suck. I am not going to use them again.
Felixmoronia
@Suffern ACE:
Packing peanuts? With all the broken bones and damaged knees and shoulders Cole is damaged goods when shipped!
SuzieC
Donated. Kay is my fellow Buckeye, and one of your best contributors. She MUST go to Netroots and report back.
liberal
I’ve got a much higher compliment for Kay than “brilliant” or “good writer”.
Namely, “works hard”.
Poopyman
I’m in for a couple of bucks, since I’m flush right now. It was great meeting her and everyone at the meetup at the Minneapolis NN, so you Detroitians better be ready with a venue!
Elizabelle
@sharl:
@Dee Loralei:
I am still smiling from hanging out with you and our other DC denizens. We have to do that again. And Dee — you need to come back!
Elizabelle
Fab that Kay will be reporting from Netroots Nation.
Class act and incisive thinker and writer.
Um, she may stand out.
John (MCCARTHY) Cole
@Anne Laurie: It wasn’t that I didn’t think you were right or didn’t trust your judgement, because I did and added her. It’s that I think we had just promoted several other front page posters, and I guess I am still a conservative at heart and believe in slow, sustainable growth. Let people adapt to the new writers, then introduce someone else when someone else stops posting. It was the same thing with Sooner. You were telling me to add him, but I was resisting because I think a new poster more than every 6 months is too much.
I have no facts or scientific data to back up my gut instincts, I just think that too many rapid changes can have an odd impact on a community. FWIW- I am doing everything I can to get Adam Silverman to be a front page poster. His Iraq post was the most informative thing I have seen on the internet. Speaking of, I am going to go email him and ask him to update because things are moving quickly, and other than Juan Cole, Silverman is one of the few whose analyses I trust.
Elizabelle
@Anne Laurie:
Good on you, Anne.
Trying to think when I last used PayPal. I lived many states over ….
Elizabelle
@John (MCCARTHY) Cole:
3 cheers for Adam Silverman. Would be a good addition.
Pogonip
@Felixmoronia: Yes, and he might hurt himself on the peanuts. Maybe we should ship him in bubble wrap.
Anne Laurie
@John (MCCARTHY) Cole: I tweak because I love (mostly).
From his post, Adam Silverman would be a great addition!
ruviana
@John (MCCARTHY) Cole: I vote for this too!
SiubhanDuinne
@John (MCCARTHY) Cole:
Please persuade Adam Silverman to join as a front-pager. I would love to see him here as a regular. Yes, things are moving very quickly, and it would be great to have his informed take on What It All Means.
Corner Stone
@John (MCCARTHY) Cole: Where has Bernd been?
joel hanes
I’m in for a modest sum.
Please make sure to let us know if the cash flow dries up before you have enough money;
I’d be happy to hit that button again if more is needed.
Betsy
Hi Kay. I’m pitching in because I want to thank you for covering North Carolina and Moral Mondays and connecting the dots the way you have done. Your work is very much appreciated by me. Have a great Netroots trip.
Betsy
BTW this is hysterical and brilliant. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jnpeOTLgyKs
+ .. Moral Monday, the Musical .. +
I'mNotSureWhoIWantToBeYet
I’m in too. Kay is a great resource here (and in Ohio – lucky Buckeyes!). Thanks for arranging things, JC.
Cheers,
Scott.
raven
Got it.
Jewish Steel
Come on, Cole! She only has an excellent perspective based on practical experience, writes clearly, and will engage in good faith anyone who comments on her posts.
Hardly representative of the BJ community.

@HinTN:
I do like summer, but low 70s? You’re joking, right?
2liberal
i kicked in $50. i do the HOSTS file thingy to avoid ads so cole doesn’t make any advertising $$$ on me. I lurk here a lot so this is my make-up for it. Do i get a subscription, also?
KBS
I’m in because I think Kay’s one of the smartest, best bloggers I read anywhere! Hope I didn’t need to add any comments to the paypal transaction.
Pogonip
@2liberal: No, but you get entered into the drawing for free pants.
rikyrah
Kay at Netroots…good
Beeb
I’m in too. See you there, Kay.
