Here’s a little taste of the Colbert/Sanford debate. Colbert got in one dig about hiking the Appalachian trail, which Sanford basically ducked, and the rest of it is her trying to sound like a Republican: “She said ‘Obamacare is extremely problematic’ and praised South Carolina’s ‘right to work’ law restricting union activity.”
Update: Hit the first link for a video – Patch seems to think autoplay that you can’t turn off in your embed is a good idea. I guess that’s the AOL in them.
Comrade Mary
Can you link to the shitshow instead of embedding? The video is auto-playing.
Chickamin Slam
This just serves up a Rovian opportunity to hit Colbert back with ads, “She’s beginning to sound like a Republican now, however she is not a real Republican, Mark Sanford is, vote Sanford, vote the real Republican, accept no imitations.”
And Colbert can retort she’s never liked Bill Maher. Now that’s a zinger!
mistermix
@Comrade Mary: I turned off the autoplay.

I wonder how much his ex-wife laughed and applauded at that leaving the country line?

As I mentioned in a thread yesterday, this IS South Carolina, where you pretty much have to say stupid shit to get elected (with a few very rare exceptions).
I hope she wins just because it *might* get Sanford out of public life for good. Beyond that, meh.
Foregone Conclusion
Autoplay still working here.
Baud
@mistermix:
In the spirit of South Carolina, YOU LIE!
It’s still autoplaying for me.
Foregone Conclusion
Also: this is conservative South Carolina. What did you expect, Hubert Humphrey?

@Chickamin Slam:
I don’t know, Every time Sanford pulls out his Pelosi line, she should come back with the specters of Nixon and Cheney. And then ask which has most damaged this country.
cvstoner
The problem with running people like this is that it gives the conservative agenda legitimacy. Let the South Carolinians keep their Republicans, and then beat them about the head and shoulders every day with their stupidity.
gene108
@cvstoner:
Won’t work.
No one thinks they are dumb. They think it’s the other guys, advocating for liberal stuff that are gumming up the works and making it hard for them to succeed.
aimai
Every time he comes up with Pelosi she should say “Stop blaming out of state women for your problems with the voters.”
Baud
@cvstoner:
The conservative agenda will have legitimacy as long as Republicans hold power in Washington.

@aimai:
On the other hand, an out-of-state woman does seem to be what got him in this mess in the first place.

@Brother Machine Gun of Desirable Mindfulness (fka AWS): Yes, that’s why it was funny.

Colbert Busch mentioned that Obamacare was problematic because of the cost to small businesses yadda, yadda, yadda. It also strips Medicare of needed funds. She does like the fact that you can buy insurance with preexisting conditions, that females can’t be charged more than men, and that medicaid is being extended. She might be one of the reasons we can’t have nice things.
Schlemizel
@aimai:
LOVE IT!
mistermix
@Foregone Conclusion: I’m OK with her sounding like a Republican to get elected, but I’m not going to ignore the fact that she does sound like a Republican.
Brother Machine Gun of Desirable Mindfulness (fka AWS)
@aimai: ah, I need more coffee. :/

Who gives a shit if Colbert-Busch is a Blue Dog? It won’t make a bit of difference in votes in the House (do they even still have those?).
All it will do is draw attention to the fact that the GOP sucks so much they can lose a race in South Cackalacky.
That will last for about 24 hours until… squirrel!
karen
South Carolina is Jesse Helms county. It’s the Southy south. You’re going to get a Blue Dog. But it’s better (not by much but numbers) than another Republican.
Gus
@karen: Jesse Helms was from North Carolina. Other than that, yes. The best that can be hoped for is a moderate Republican running as a Democrat.

Isn’t the Fukushima reactor by the seashore, too?

She also said she SUPPORTED the gun purchase background check legislation that was voted down recently. Sanford said he opposed it.
And said she supported immigration reform “along the lines originally proposed by our own senator Lindsey Graham.”
(I bet Miss Graham wished Busch hadn’t brought that up just now, while he’s trying to reposition himself as a Republican attack dog in advance of 2014….)
Yes, she said Obamacare was “extremely problematic,” and gave some examples of what she saw as potential problems with implementation, etc. But she was NOT saying that she would be among the “repeal” crew. I thought it was beautifully finessed for the audience she was addressing. It gave the impression to haters that she would be on their side against it, but she didn’t actually say she’d make any effort to get rid of it or its provisions. In fact, she implied she might try to IMPROVE it, but not REMOVE it.
I have hated the fact that one of her ads has her saying “The deficit is killing jobs,” but she could say that while thinking of reducing the deficit by stimulating the job situation and not by counter-productive austerity measures. Maybe she just needs educating.
Her brother might help get through to her once she gets into office.
Of course, she’ll probably only have 2 years. This district will revert right back to a Republican rep next time even if they reject Sanford this time around — and even with all his problems, he’s still got a shot. There’s an R next to his name!
Elizabelle
@Julia Grey:
She would have to defend her seat in 2014. This is a special election.
Folks: this is South Carolina. The Republic of Crazy.
Would you rather have a Claire McCaskill candidate or a more photogenic Todd Akin in office?
That is your choice in coastal South Carolina.
ECB is a pragmatic woman, smart and curious.
She’d be a great congresswoman.
