That’s right, kids, a BJ-meetup in Seattle! The things those people get up to…
Here’s the specifics that I was asked to post for you all:
We crazy folk up in Seattle are planning another meet-up type thingie. We’ll be hosting it at Vessel (www.vesselseattle.com/) on Saturday December 1st aiming for a 7 pm initial starting time. This is our planned time to meet up with Lojasmo and possibly The Dangerman if he’s about. Should be a rather decent time!
Joshua De Mers
So, now you know what I know. It’s a long drive from central Oklahoma, so I’m going to beg off, but I do hope that somebody goes and takes pictures, and I or one of the other front pagers will post them.
Use this thread to hash out details and so forth and for the rest of you not in or close to Sea-Tac, open thread!
sb
Long way from Los Angeles (grumbles)
S. cerevisiae
Crap! I’m coming out a month too late.
srv
I decided when I was there two weeks ago that Seattle is culinarily superior to SF. Walked into 3 random places and they were all excellent.
Except all the bartendresses want to move to SF.
BGinCHI
I assume this is getting liveblogged.
Right up until MikeJ loses control of him and Yutsano goes streaking. Then we go to the video.
PurpleGirl
Hope the meet-up gets a bunch of people and you have a good time.
scav
@BGinCHI: depends entirely if there is a tease before streaking. no pants!
TheMightyTrowel
well this is certainly closer to me than NYC… plan on in Hawaii for early April and I might be able to come. Or Sydney. BJ meet up in Sydney anyone? ;-)
wonkie
Since this is a Seattle meetup I’ll share a Washington-centric joke that showed up on my facebook feed:
Question: Why did Washington state legalize marijuana and gay marriage on the same day?
Answer: Because Leviticus 20:13 says that if a man lays with another man he should be stoned.
MikeBoyScout
If you come to the meet-up in Seattle you can personally pick-up your Amazon gifts and save on the delivery. ;-)
Mark-NC
When you guys talk about a BJ meetup, you might want to be careful to specify that you mean a Balloon Juice meetup.
Remember, trolls never sleep!!
AliceBlue
@wonkie:
BA-DUMP-DUMP!
Gwangung
Augh. Have tickets fr a show that night….
MikeJ
@Mark-NC: You never know what kind of meetup it will turn out to be. Of course this one is only a block away from the US courthouse so you might want to keep an eye out for marshals.
Yutsano
@TheMightyTrowel: Hmmm…might have to play on Expedia when I get home from work…
@BGinCHI: You know the rules: pics or it never happened.
Although MikeJ is much more likely to streak than I am. I’m a bit of a prude.
dollared
Great. We’re going to meet at some place that’s just a fancy name for a toilet.
lumpkin
This is kind of a ritzy place. Not sure they allow DFH’s in there – ya sure this is a BJ-type hangout? Even in Seattle there are some snooty places. This might be one, based on location and google comments. But, if I have a clean shirt that day, I might show up. We have a couple of drinking liberally places here – might want to consider one of those next time.
dollared
@Gwangung: Show is no excuse. What show starts at 7pm?
Cain
Didn’t somebody talk about having a PDX meet up? Let’s do one here.. we can pick a nice suave place to do it. Whose interested??
TheMightyTrowel
@Yutsano: wouldn’t that be funny. I’ve got a conference in Honolulu in early April but i’m also taking a bit of leave to see Hawaii (I’ve never been) and visit with a cousin who teaches at UH.
SiubhanDuinne
@sb:
Even longer from Atlanta (pouts, gripes and bitches)
SiubhanDuinne
It’s early yet, and plans so far are fluid at best — but I am probably going to be in the UK for a few weeks next spring, say late April/early May. As I put together an itinerary, I’d love to know where our Brit and expat juicers are located, in hopes of arranging a meet up or several.
Gozer
If Philly were by Seattle I’d be there, but…
BGinCHI
@Yutsano: Maybe we could get a Kickstarter campaign going to, well, get you going.
MikeJ
@lumpkin: They used to be next door to the 5th Ave Theatre. It is certainly a cocktail bar, not a beer bar. The type of place when you ask if they use rye instead of bourbon in a Manhattan they will act puzzled as to why anyone would use anything other than rye.
If we wish we can chill and have a cocktail there and move the party elsewhere. There’s an oyster bar in Blueacre across the street, but it’s not a cheap place.
Hell, it’s less than 10 blocks to the Croc.
Ben Franklin
@sb:
Yeah. The Left Coast is the red-headed step-child.
TheMightyTrowel
@SiubhanDuinne: I used to be in Oxford ;-) I’d recommend a visit – lots and lots of pretty buildings and a few great museums!
Yutsano
@TheMightyTrowel: I’d love it! I could catch up with an old friend from college and visit my birthplace. It’s on the basde there though so no sneaking in I’m afraid.
We might have you talk to FH #1, since he is a resident of Sydney. He’d squeal at the thought of a meet-up!
Maude
@TheMightyTrowel:
If I come to Sydney, I’ll be on a yacht in the harbor and I’ll wave.
Do you pay attention to the Sydney Hobart race? I do, every year.
lumpkin
@MikeJ:
In retrospect, I sounded snooty myself – like the only way to be cool here is to be grungy or something. Sincere apologies to whoever picked the venue.
If I go, I’ll have to assume a new assumed name.
Punchy
A BJ-“meetup” in most towns (lookin at you, Vegas) will cost ya some $$ and requires a very very understanding spouse.
John O
Are there enough for a Chicago meet and greet?
Opie_jeanne
Aw, man! In SoCal then. Have fun.
MikeJ
@lumpkin: No apologies needed: perhaps it is too snooty. I really like a good beer type bar too, but Yutsy didn’t show when we didn’t meet his standards.
ruemara
Man, where’s the NorCal meetup? All we get is flown over. And tomatoes.
TheMightyTrowel
@Maude: not a big Yachting fan really, but i was just in Hobart in Oct and they seem mad for it.
@Yutsano: well, keep me in the loop. Also, have I missed something: FH#1?
YellowJournalism
Coming out almost a month after that. Oh, well! I would be too busy anyway. Have too many relatives to visit out of guilt.
eemom
Why is there never a meetup here in the nation’s fucking capital? I mean if it weren’t for us there wouldn’t be a blog at all. Sheeyit.
BGinCHI
@John O: I dropped the ball on that a year ago or so, but if one gets organized I’ll go.
Allen
@MikeJ: Even closer to Pig Alley (if it’s still around and has it’s 60’s ambiance).
Yutsano
@TheMightyTrowel: TattooSydney. Hasn’t posted in a long time but I know he’s about.
@YellowJournalism: I may have to conspire, although if it’s over the Christmas holiday I won’t be in town. And I’d say meet up with MikeJ, but he really shouldn’t be in public unattended. It can get messy.
Mr Stagger Lee
Is vessel a expensive yuppie place, we blue collars and peasants in Tacoma have standards you know :-). Good thing the meetup is one week after the Apple Cup, the smack talking should die down by now.
Allen
@Maude: Back in my ocean racing days always wanted to do a Sydney-Hobart, although that race can be brutal.
TheMightyTrowel
@Yutsano: Cheers :)
MikeJ
@Allen: Are you referring to Place Pigalle? It’s in the market, I went there , err. end of Aug I think. Also kinda spendy.
I just realised I mentioned where Vessel used to be, but not where it is now. Olive & 7th. I haven’t been since they reopened, which is one of the reasons I suggested it.
John O
@BGinCHI:
Worry not. It’s a ball I wouldn’t even pick up. But I would try hard to make it, too.
Allen
@MikeJ: Same place, but back during my Seattle days we called it Pig Alley. Got in the only fight I’ve ever been there, on the landing, screened in with chicken wire, three stories up, right next to Alaskan Way. Is the viaduct still there?
PurpleGirl
Their web site doesn’t have menu page? Even the Facebook page doesn’t specifically mention a menu. Hhhhmmmmm. Just how snooty is that?
Redshift
@eemom: I’d be up for a NoVA or DC meetup!
MikeJ
@Allen: So far. Scheduled to get torn down and replaced with a tunnel. It was damaged ten years ago in a quake and they’re just now getting around to it.
Yutsano
@Mr Stagger Lee: I find your optimism adorable. :)
SiubhanDuinne
@TheMightyTrowel:
Love Oxford! Have spent many happy hours there and would willingly do so again. And again.
Somewhere languishing amongst the yet-unsorted photos from the last trip is a series of a dozen or so close-ups of spiderwebs adorning the decorative stone carvings all along Magdalen Bridge. Hard to believe that no student had disturbed them, but they looked as if they had remained untouched since the days of Cardinal Newman. I’m no photographer, but I’m rather proud of those images.
eldorado
sooner, why don’t we organize an ok/kansas/n. texas meetup?
PurpleGirl
If it weren’t so close, I might think of making the trip from NYC. I’ve been feeling restless and would like to do some traveling. A meet-up would be a nice way to celebrate my birthday (actually Nov. 30th).
The Dangerman
Sad to say I can’t make it; my trip evolved from a month in Seattle to 2 separate quick trips to Seattle about a month apart to now only one quick trip (so far; next one unplanned at this time) that didn’t get me all that close to Seattle. I really wanted to check out that Sushi place that Yutsano told me about; oh well, next time.
I’m kinda bummed because not only did I miss record rainfall, torrential flooding, and ferries not ferrying, but I will miss the meetup. This could be for the best; trust me, I’m far more charming virtually (this should scare you mightily).
lojasmo
@Gwangung:
There are no good shows that night. Person up.
BillinGlendaleCA
@Yutsano: I still blame the SPTR’s(Shitty Pac-12 Refs).
Joel
@srv: Seattle is a highly underrated food city. As is Portland.
lojasmo
@ruemara:
seattle is norcal. drive up.
Joel
p.s. are Goldy and Dan Savage going to show up?
eemom
@Redshift:
Cool — I know there’s a bunch of folks here in both jurisdictions, so let’s see if we can drum up some interest.
btw, to this day you are the ONLY blog acquaintance I have ever met up with in person — remember Old Ebbitt in 2007 with the Balrog dude from FDL? Seems like a lifetime ago.
lojasmo
@Mr Stagger Lee:
Probably. I would prefer matt’s. If you come, I will buy your b00ze.
lojasmo
@PurpleGirl:
Yeah, Sorta wish i had been asked. Wife is gluten free, and only drinks wine. I only drink ale.
LOL at a cocktail bar.
Domage. at least it will only be a mile walk from our hotel.
ruemara
@lojasmo: Change my oil, oil filter and then get me a car with stamina.
Short Bus Bully
Spousal Unit’s birthday that night or I would be out in force. Fucking lousy timing…
/grumble
Redshift
@eemom: Oh, yeah, that’s somewhere back in the cobwebs of my memory…
The Bobs
December 1st? The new pot law doesn’t take effect until Dec. 6th.
CaseyL
Sweet! We were talking about another meet-up a couple months ago, and I thought I missed it.
I should be able to be there. Currently have no plans for that evening.
Soonergrunt
@eldorado: We should, for after the holidays, I think!
B..Lehmann
Wish we could come but husband is recovering from latest surgery.
Yutsano
@CaseyL: We could carpool if you want. I still live on 112th.
Studly Pantload, the emotionally unavailable unicorn
Hmm . . . bit limousine-liberal for my budget, but I do know how to nurse a drink (besides, drinking specifically to get drunk at 7:00 on a Saturday evening, well, that’s not my thing). May hafta pop in…
bago
Calendered.
goblue72
I might actually have to show up to this. I’ve only been up in Seattle from SF for about a year and haven’t made it to Vessel yet. Top notch cocktails from what I hear. Don’t knock fancy cocktail bars out of hand – there’s something to be said for a well-crafted cocktail with house-made ingredients.
Vito’s – which was recently revamped – is nearby – http://www.vitosseattle.com/menu/cocktails.htm
northquirk
I’ve only been to Vessel at the previous location on 5th; it was definitely more style than substance. Vito’s is pretty great, and the Hideout (run by the same crew) is brilliant, but tiny. Those places are both on First Hill (~Boren & Madison) which is a wee bit of a walk from 7th & Olive.
gwangung
@lojasmo: Um, that’s closing weekend for The Habit, one of the triumvarate of sketch comedy legends in the 20th Century (Mike Daisey came from one of them). I don’t go, I lose my Old Fart Sketch Comedy card….
dollared
@goblue72: Noooooooo, don’t tell me they took the dance floor with the mirrors out of Vitos! I can’t handle that much change…..
Studly Pantload, the emotionally unavailable unicorn
@gwangung:
So, A/K/A The Almost Live Troupe? Not that I don’t know from Mike Daisey; he used to frequent a Belltown poetry open mic I was a regular at, back in the day. I knew of a few hopeful playwrights and screen writers from those times (me included), but Daisey’s the only one I’ve heard about since then.
Still follow Nancy Guppy on the Facebook. Hot, funny women are a prime weakness of mine (hence my marriage to the gorgeous and witty Mrs. Pantload).
CaseyL
@Yutsano: Carpool? Sounds good – would you ride with me or me with you?
Tlazolteotl
Hmmm, that’s only 4 blocks from the Re-bar….
Yutsano
@CaseyL: I’m fine with either, but I don’t plan on drinking much, so I could swing by and pick you up and then we head on down south. Then you’re free to get as verschnickered as you’d like!
taylormattd
@MikeJ: Vessel isn’t right next to the 5th Ave Theater anymore?
taylormattd
@MikeJ: Nm, googled it. Apparently I’m very behind on my news about Vessel. Been hanging out on the Hill too often I suppose.
dollared
@taylormattd: Looks like it’s where the original Torrefazione cafe was on the corner of 7th and Olive. Short walk from the Hill.
Lousy time for me – peak wife-and-kids time. But I’ll be there somehow.
dollared
@Yutsano: You do have one drink coming.
dollared
@Yutsano: You do have one drink coming.
gwangung
@Studly Pantload, the emotionally unavailable unicorn: Not quite…It was Up In Your Grill (Daisey’s group), The Habit and Bald Faced Lie. I think a good chunk of them came out of Annex’s Star Drek run to form their groups, and almost all of them are working actors on the Equity/high fringe level now.
I’m about a step to a half step below and am pretty much Old Fart as a sketch comedian….sketch is like standup, it’s more a young person’s game.
Linnaeus
Might be able to make this.
Bago
What is the bj signal?
Lojasmo
Had a great time. Thanks to Yutsano for setting it up, and to all who came for your company.
Good meeting you all.
