Warren gets the first question, on jobs, and IMO responds strongly…
First (out of line, audience ‘agreed’ to keep quiet) applause for Warren, defending what she calls ACA (Obamacare) against “Sen. Brown’s first job” of attempting to repeal it.
Brown keeps insisting Warren/Obama will “take money away from OUR communities”; Warren rebutting that Brown has voted against three job bills & will continue to vote as his Republican masters dictate.
Next question: education costs. Warren says more federal support is needed, and incidentally, Brown voted against reducing interest rates on student loans.
Brown whines rebuts that Warren gets paid a lot of money by Harvard, and that’s why college costs so much money! (Second round of applause) Also, small businesses shouldn’t be taxed just so students can have lower rates…
Same rondelay: Warren says we need to give American kids “the best chance at a good education”. Brown says that raising taxes is something he can never, never nevernevernever contenance.
The “Inevitable” deficit reduction qeusiton. Warren says we’re ‘winding down’ in Afghanistan, we can take some of those funds and use them to support social services as well as cutting the deficit. Says she will never vote to cut Social Security, gets the third & loudest round of applause.
Brown says that taxes must never be raised, taxes! Taxes, terrible, terrible, taxes, crushing! Lies some more about the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s B.S.
Moderator Jim Madigan is doing a much better job than DGregory. Or, for that matter, Jim Lehrer.
What’s the “middle class”? Brown getting teary-eyed about “fighting, all my life” against the government “pigs in a trough, who take & take & TAKE!”
Warren says she actually got a record of helping the middle class, not just spouting rhetoric.
Brown rebuts that Warren is a “lobbyist, hired gun” for big corporations. Gets booed by the audience. Warren defends her Consumer Protection Agency, gets another round of applause.
Scott claims he (& Sen. Reid) “made the agency better” before voting for it — mixture of boos & applause. Oops, Warren gets to point out that Brown secretly went behind the scenes to try & rewrite the bill to make it easier on big local companies…
Uh-oh, the Ladyparts Question. Brown grew up in an abusive home w/a single mom, and now he has two daughters. Yay him. He’s actually got some semi-coherent defense here, since he’s been allowed to vote for “women’s issues” when the Repub counters knew his vote wouldn’t affect the issue anyway.
Warren congratulates Brown on being a good husband & father. Then points out that Brown actually voted against equal pay and Planned Parenthood, not to mention against Kagan. “One chance to vote, and he voted against women’s rights.”
Brown: “Yes, I voted against your boss.” Took me a minute to realize he meant Pres. Obama, not Kagan.
Syria, also Iran. Warren: “I support President Obama, as the Commander in Chief”. More applause.
Brown reminds everyone he’s a JAG, also we can’t have our army fighting with its hands tied. Also, Iran is Satan walking, but he loves Israel, unlike some people.
Since reducing the deficit is “crucial”, when it comes to cutting militiary bases in MA, how will the candidates vote?
Brown: Did he mention he’s in the National Guard? Also, Our Sacred Military must be supported at all costs, as long as it doesn’t involve raising taxes, of course.
Warren: We need to reshape our military budget, reduce the standing army we no longer need, and probably raise taxes on millionaires and megacorporations to support veterans while developing the high-tech forces we’ll need in the future.
Closing statements. Brown: He is very very thankful, for the honor of being our senator. He wishes to remind everyone one more time, he is bipartisan, in the most bipartisanly way possible. And then once again he gets teary-eyed, literally, at the horror of raising taxes.
Warren: She wants to help ensure a better future for all our children & grandchildren, not just the millionaires.
Madigan (moderator) reminds everyone, “Remember, none of this counts, audience members, UNLESS YOU GET OUT AND VOTE!”
Excellent debate for Warren, IMO, and when Brown isn’t allowed to start off with his “Fauxahontus” BS, he’s really feeling out of his depth. Also, it might’ve been a very different debate in Denver if Madigan had been the moderator…

The native american heritage thing is hilarious to me. I forget the exact link, but his mother or grandmother was part native american, but you would never have known it.
Brown’s problem is that no one thinks of Native American’s and affirmative action the way they do African Americans or Hispanics, so it just does not resonate.

It’s a valid point anyway. There was plenty of bitching that Warren was blowing the election after the first debate. The parallels are there. @geg6: I think it’s overblown. Just kind of picky on both sides, actually. I was just minding stepping over it as I went down the thread, but really didn’t mean to get everybody worked up. Because I’m now engaging in exactly the exercise I was minding.
Back to the debate.
Peregrinus
@geg6:
I remember that very differently, at least the parts I was commenting on. I do know there was some commentary about how Scotty’s attempt to paint her as an out-of-touch elitist college professor might work with Masshole white dudes, but that given her strong performance that clearly hadn’t done the job.
Someone in the epic Bernard Finel thread mentioned that white guys in the Northeast aren’t swallowing GOP bullshit quite as easily as white guys in other regions. That might be the salient difference in reaction between “Brown did something that could’ve been effective but it didn’t work as well as he thought it would” and “Obama is going to lose the election, we need to go back on defense.”
JPL
I love this debate.

Do not think this will go over well.
Excellent, excellent debate. Very well moderated.
Lower Podunk
@PreservedKillick: What’s up with that? He’s said it twice now. The ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee is John McCain.

I tuned in late but what I saw was a very impressive Warren performance. Brown wasn’t as douchey as he’s been but he also didn’t have anything beyond his talking points and Warren was able to hammer home hers. Her ending statement could have been a bit stronger; I wish she had emphasized the Supreme Court angle. But a good debate for her and surprisingly good moderation from Jim Madigan.

The Professor schooled Brown tonight and won my vote. When his recored was laid out like that it would be hard to vote for him. The Grover Norquist pledge was a big part. The idea of taking away Mortgage interest tax deductions to continue a tax cut for the ultra rich, actually made me feel anxious. He’s also willing to cut the defense budget in half (Barns AFB and Westover AFB) so he can live up to a Grover Norquist pledge… What Countries National Gaurd does he serve on?
George Chuzi
A pretty good running account One point: Brown repeatedly refers to Kagan as Warren’s “boss” because Kagan was the Dean at Harvard Law during Warren’s tenure as a prof.
RinaX
@geg6:
I also remember the complaints about Elizabeth Warren’s first debate, how underwhelming she was and how she didn’t challenge enough. The difference is that Dems did not go into a complete meltdown over it and remembered that there were three more debates upcoming, and I believe their local media actually did a decent job of fact-checking vs just judging body language and such.
scott
@Kadzimiel: Totally irrelevant to the discussion, but your name sounds quite cool and I was curious about the background for it. Cheers!
CarolO
Wow. Brown said flat out he would allow every resident of MASS to have tax increases before allowing the Bush Tax Cuts to expire. That makes it pretty clear where his priorities lie and that is with Grover Norquist.
I have watched Warren take on Congress and she does not back down when she is fighting for people. But I would be very nervous knowing that the Republican Party is very anxious to toss out Medicare and there’s also talk of privatizing Social Security. We all know he would vote with his Party.
But what’s his hang-up over how much money she makes? Senators work 2 weeks out of every four, are on the Senate floor perhaps 10 hours a month and the rest of the time sitting in their offices campaigning for money and talking with lobbyists and making deals and they make some decent money themselves. Sounds to me as he is a bit jealous over her success.
MA_IndependentVoter
Warren has my vote.
Brown like Romney and Ryan is a perpetual liar. Fact check what he said in previous debates and see for yourself. He fails the moral hazard test.
In addition, Brown voted against the Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act, which took Big Bank middlemen out of the federal student lending process.
This act is expected to save taxpayers and students billions of dollars in the coming years. Banks are Scott Brown’s biggest campaign donors.
Matt McIrvin
@David in NY: Coakley hardly even campaigned. She was a terrible, terrible candidate. Didn’t keep me from being pissed off at the people of my state when she lost, of course.
tori
Warren rocked!
Note–Brown did mean Elena Kagan when he said “I didn’t vote for your boss.” Kagan was Warren’s “boss” at Harvard Law. He used the same line in the last debate when the same subject (his vote against confirming Kagan to SCOTUS) came up. imho he was very rude and trying to imply something along the lines of “you gals, always going to the ladies’ room together.”
Another Halocene Human

Oh, pshaw. It’s on the friggin’ B-line, what more do you want?

Another Halocene Human
@Matt McIrvin: If Warren wins, it will have been a good thing that good people in Boston stayed home rather than vote for the odious DA Coakley.
Just saying. Not just a horrible candidate–a horrible person.
The entire way that race went down was crap.
