This is something of a grand blogospheric circle something-or-other, but via Delong, I learn that Krugman learned from our own DougJ of Jacob Weisberg’s dismay that the aforesaid Krugman had the gall to be both right about lots and lots of stuff — and to point this fact out rather bluntly to those who persist in error.
Krugman’s response is so pitch perfect that I plan to steal it and resteal it and generally beat it to death every time a villager whinges about the terrible rudeness of the great unwashed.
Here it is, start to finish:

“Sir, the peasants are revolting.”
‘Yes, they certainly are!’
And I suppose the Greek peasants are revolting, too?
And when will the peasant’s here, myself included, revolt?

I love the crescendo.
So, in other news, I looked through the JC Penney circular in the Sunday paper and they were doing these ad spreads that were real-family type things, where they have a family pose in JC Penney clothes and they tell you their name and town and a little bit of their story. These ads included a small girl with Down syndrome; and a lesbian couple, arms around each other, with their kids. I am not 100% positive, but I believe this marks the first time I have ever seen in a mainstream national advertising campaign a clearly gay family. I think it’s safe to say they are not particularly afraid of the Million [sic] Moms against Ellen DeGeneres.

I’m sure that the new French president won’t be successful in everything he tries to do and won’t be correct in everything he does manage to do but the French just might be better off if they turned loose of their love affair with austerity.
Good luck to them all. Live long and prosper.

Krugman comes around here? Damn, I’d better get dressed.

So does the election better things to neighboring Spain or make them worse? Or no effect? Soon-to-be tourists want to know.

It’s become clear to European voters that the German Plan is “We get richer, you get poorer.” And it’s about time, too.
NancyDarling
@Ash Can: Now, if we could just get our President to quit Andrew Sullivan and read more BJ. This site is a much better place to check the pulse of America than that of a British ex-pat whose blog is always all about himself. Besides, BJ is funnier and has pets and recipes and gardening tips.

So, I can’t see video from this computer – any chance there’s a transcript lurking out on the interwebs?
Napoleon
@Nina:
It is a video of Beaker from the Muppets singing Feelings.
MattF
@Nina: It’s the Muppets character Beaker singing ‘Feelings’ so the transcript is going to look a bit weird.

@Nina:
It’s Beaker from the Muppets doing “Feelings.”

I think the guy taking the press release misheard that it was actually “The Minion’s Mom Against EllenD”. Just some guys mom trying to help him get on the wingnut welfare train

a bit OT but Washington Monthly is free previewing the new cover story on Univision and their news anchor Jorge Ramos and how it might affect the election.
I highly recommend you go read it before it’s behind a firewall (as I think it will be after today). Ramos is actually a real journalist and a remarkable interviewer. I saw him do his post presidency interview with Carlos Salinas, he totally destroyed his stealing lying ass.

@DougJ, Head of Infidelity: Now, DougJ, you’re getting awfully close to taking that first hit, which will only lead to another and then another and then another. You’ve been doing so well – be careful.

@DougJ, Head of Infidelity: I just clicked over to his blog and there are no tears being shed—yet.

This makes me think Krugman’s aware of the epic BJ/SN/Atrios video wars of the past. Weisberg better watch out.

@Ash Can: That was my first thought. Damn. First Wil Wheaton, now Krugman.

Or maybe BJ is the Banksy graffito on the boarded up building that the cool kids notice as they limo past in the morning.
Not to disparage John and his accomplishments here. I’m a big fan of Banksy, and his political art.
NancyDarling
@DougJ, Head of Infidelity: Sully has no cojones because he won’t allow push-back from his readers, also, too.
NancyDarling
@RossInDetroit: I am not familiar with Banksy. Is there a site where I can view his stuff? Is he better than Robby Conal?
RossInDetroit
@NancyDarling:
Banksy is interesting. Probably the most popular, successful and well known anonymous artist of the modern era.
Politically he’s radical left and anti-corporate. But unlike, say, Rage Against the Machine, he’s hilariously witty and at times light hearted about it.
He has a website, but this will give you an overview.
dslak
@DougJ, Head of Infidelity: Sully’s been saying for a while now that austerity clearly isn’t working (but he did support it for Britain initially).
The problem is that Hollande and whoever ends up in power in Greece are unlikely to be terribly Serious. Assuming the pre-election handwringing from The Economist is any guide, it’s only a matter of time before they do something to lead him to deplore them.

For Weisberg’s inevitable retaliatory response, Mr. Krugman should post this as his reply.

I remember Ikea casually using gay couples in their ads, but I’m not sure if a major American icon like JCP has done it before.
Now that they’ve changed management, I keep going in to see if there’s anything worth buying. There hasn’t been anything yet (changing what’s in the design pipeline is slow and/or expensive) but I keep hoping, particularly since Target’s accessories are UG-LY right now. Not interested in buying neon yellow vinyl accessories from 1982, thankyouverymuch.
@RossInDetroit:
I find Banksy interesting partly because “he” may not be a he, but a collective, or at least several artists collaborating. It would explain how Banksy art is so ubiquitous and yet no one ever sees it go up.

@Mnemosyne
Except you know, all the videos of Banksy art going up! Even videos of him and others in his studio. Most people don’t see street art go up because it’s done at night for the most part. And since getting caught in the act can land you in jail, most artists are relatively quick once they start on it.
Furthermore since a fair amount of his work is paid for and asked for, he gets cover while putting it up.
He was heavily featured in exit through the gift shop actually putting up art, both legally and illegally. He’s not exactly a mystery in the scene.

Ha! That’s what a full-wit looks like.

Well KThug was still wrong about the need to nationalize the banks and since that is his area of specialty he will never get back all his credibility with me for that one.
He was also wrong about saying the US will go back into a double dip because the stimulus was not big enough. Again, his area of specialty although saying the US would go back into double dip was just his way of sulking since he doesn’t need to be accountable for what he says. Unless readers MADE him accountable but I hold no such hope for his readers.

I look forward to the time where Krugman turns up on a Sunday talk show and just plants a cream pie in someone’s face. I reckon August at the latest.

Good to see a mention of Robbie Conal, whose terrific graphic work has slipped away from attention of late.
At a recent exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum, “Infinite Jest: Satire and Caricature from Leonardo to Levine,” several of Conal’s famous political posters (e.g., Jesse Helms, Shrub) were included.

@Mickey:
The banks need adult leadership.
They don’t have it right now.
Nationalization seems to be the best way to do it. Take them over, terminate with no parachute the Ferengi scum running them like their own personal piggy banks, and bar them (and their children) from ever working in banking again.

and that would have been the best outcome, Krugman was correct, we would get out of recession much faster and banks would not sit on a piles of money not lending

Beaker kinda looks like Weisberg too.
This is great on so many levels.
Having smarts, humor and George Clooney playing you in a movie clearly is not an equitable distribution of God’s gifts. But when you use them like Krugman is, it’s all for the good.

@handsmile: Years ago, when Conal was relatively unknown, my dentist boss wouldn’t accept some original Conal work in trade for some needed and fairly costly dental work. I guess Conal was cash-strapped at the time. No amount of cajoling on my part would convince him (the dentist) that this was a very good deal. I have no idea what Conal’s work goes for now, but I suspect many multiples of what the crowns would have run.

@PurpleGirl: That sums it up very nicely. I’m fairly new here, although a long time lurker, and that’s exactly what draws me to this community and keeps me here. I really do enjoy it all. @NancyDarling:
Well, that’s not exactly fair. He publishes dissents every day, and they’re often eviscerating. It’s just that he often starts at some boneheaded position and has to be dragged screaming and kicking to a better position, only to do it again with some other topic a couple of weeks later.

@Nina:
Comment Number One is a complete transcript. Really!
Ben Wolf
@Mickey: Krugman’s areas of specialty are international trade and economic geography, which is why his repeated errors in those areas are so egregious. The only call he’s made correctly is the importance of aggregate demand, which everyone who doesn’t call themselves a conservative economist or a libertarian also made, so his accomplishment in being right about the effects of austerity isn’t particularly impressive.
RossinDetroit
@Mnemosyne:
Exit through the Gift Shop has been endlessly analyzed for clues that it’s a put-on or a prank. I’ve read them all and I remain unconvinced. If it’s a fake, it’s such a good one we’ll never know unless the perpetrators confess. Banksy and Fairey swear it’s all legit.
I prefer to believe that Banksy is one artist, and that he can call on a talented crew when necessary. Some of his works certainly would be impossible for a lone painter.
At any rate, I like his ideas and his humor. The concept of creating works of art, smuggling them into museums and ‘installing’ them is particularly brilliant.
And he’s gotten rich and successful without a minute of personal celebrity or self promotion outside of his work itself. That’s completely unique.

@Corner Stone: I have the appearance of a deranged hippie, so I suspect I wouldn’t be allowed in the Times building. And despite my oft repeated criticisms Krugman has it spot on in his latest op-ed regarding the eurozone, although I think his belief the euro will hold together is wishful thinking.
