These clowns are out of their minds.
Remember last Friday’s White House shooting incident? At the time, it was reported that the shooting had nothing to do with the White House.
Well, apparently, it did — Pennsylvania State Police arrested the shooter, 21 year-old Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez.
Upon hearing the news, Laurene Pierce (President of the College Republicans at University of Texas) thought it would be hilarious to tweet that people shouldn’t shoot Obama, “as tempting as it may be.”
Tee hee! It’s so funny!
From ABC News:
A 21-year-old Idaho man suspected of firing a semi-automatic rifle at the White House was arrested today, authorities said.
“On Wednesday afternoon at approximately 12:35 p.m. EST, based on information generated by Secret Service agents from the Pittsburgh Field Office, Pennsylvania State Police Troop A located and arrested Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez at a hotel near Indiana, Pa.,” according to a statement from Secret Service Special Agent in Charge Edwin Donovan.
Donovan said that Ortega-Hernandez was in the custody of Pennsylvania State Police after being found at a Hampton Inn.
The Secret Service fanned out across the country, coordinating with local law enforcement to find the shooter. The agency said that it had received information that Ortega-Hernandez was using certain hotels during his travels.
This morning, a hotel employee reportedly recognized the suspect from photos distributed by the Secret Service and contacted the agency.
The Secret Service said Tuesday that it suspected that a bullet fired in the shooting incident Friday may have hit the White House after a round was found in a window. The agency said they feared the suspect in the incident might be a threat to President Obama.
The round was stopped by ballistic glass behind the historic exterior glass, while an additional round was found on the exterior of the White House.Police believe Ortega-Hernandez is mentally ill. He has an extensive record, ranging from domestic violence to drug charges. Sources say a police investigation uncovered evidence suggesting Ortega-Hernandez has a fixation on the White House.
After she heard the news, Laurene Pierce, whose Twitter profile reads “UT student, proud Zionist, President of UT College Republicans (@texascr) and intern for @TexasAFP & @TeamDewhurst. Staunch believer in American Exceptionalism” decided it would be a good idea to joke about assassinating the president:
ABC News has more:
Hours after Pennsylvania State Police arrested a 21-year-old Idaho man for allegedly firing a semi-automatic rifle at the White House, the top student official for the College Republicans at the University of Texas tweeted that the idea of assassinating President Obama was “tempting.”
Pierce, the president of the College Republicans at UT Austin, told ABC News the comment was a “joke” and that the “whole [shooting incident] was stupid.” Giggling, she said that an attempted assassination would “only make the situation worse.”
“Insofar as she’s a representative [of the College Republicans], maybe it shouldn’t be said, but she’s made a positive statement in a way, ” said Cassie Wright, the group’s vice president.
“I don’t really see anything wrong with it,” Wright added. “It’s just a personal comment, not representative of any group. Just freedom of speech, you know?”
Only in the addled-Republican mind could a tweet calling for other similarly-addled minds not to assassinate the President be interpreted as a positive statement.
Enjoy your quiet time with the Secret Service, Laurene. You’re an embarrassment.

Once again, a Republican right-whinger thinks “freedom of speech” means “freedom from having your speech criticized in any way.”

The thing that really bugs me with these yahoos is their total misunderstanding of “free speech”. Whenever one of them gets called on saying something totally offensive they yell “freedom of speech” like it is some sort of magical get out of jail free card. I am English and I probably know more about freedom of speech than these people do (thanks to being a paralegal to an attorney who has represented many, many topless bars). Dr. Laura had all the freedom of speech in the world to say what she did, there was nothing however stopping her employers from firing her for it, because IT WASN’T THE GOVERNMENT DOING IT. You know free market and all that. Morons.

G-Dub has a nephew named “Pierce Bush” who showed up on the “TODAY” show drunk and out of his mind, and he started hitting on the news anchor,

there’s a parallel universe these people inhabit, where “Conservapedia” is their go-to reference source, where they get all their news about the world from Fox News, Limbaugh, and the rest of the right-wing hate media…
…and then there’s the parallel, wingnut Constitution. The 1st Amendment of the wingnut Constitution says that wingnuts can say the most aggressively imbecilic and offensive things their puny little neanderthal brains can think up, and if anybody criticizes in the slightest way what they’ve said, it’s oppression on the scale of the Soviet pogroms, the Holocaust and the Cultural Revolution all put together.

There is a lot of butthurt among some Republicans that many historians etc. considered GWB one of the worst presidents in history – which he was due to his personal inadequacies.
So as to salvage GWB’s honor many are intent on projecting that title onto Obama and think a successful attempt to block any achievement might make him the new worst.

There was one appointment “club owner having problems with his pasties” I looked at the receptionist and said “what? has there been food poisioning?” the receptionist looked at me like I was nuts. I honestly thought they were talking about Cornish Pasties (food of the gods by the way) as opposed to the “pasties” that they used to cover the dancers breasts. Twenty odd years later I am more informed but I still laugh at my innocence back in those days.

The larger story here is how the this tweet is part of the right’s larger mindset: they are convinced that this Ortega-Hernandez incident is a false flag operation to raise sympathy for the President’s re-election.

As far as I know, the word “Zionist” has always been code as a way to say “Jew” but not in a positive way, more as a way for an antisemite to really say a word that rhymes with “bike.” No Jewish person I know, no matter the sect, Reformed or Orthodox calls themselves a “Zionist.”
Zionist means that they believe only Jews belong in Israel and while many Jews (I’m not one of them) believe that only Jews belong in Israel, they don’t call themselves “Zionists.”
Now Messianic Zionists or “Jews for Jesus” call themselves “Zionists” and Christian Zionists who want to bring on the End of Days are “proud Zionists.” Of course, they want to slaughter Jews to accomplish this feat so they like dead Jews and LOVE Israel.
As for the comment about Obama, she’s deadly serious. But let’s face it, I’m sure if Obama was assassinated people here like Uncle Clarence Thomas and Reality Check would be creaming themselves because they got their biggest wish without having to get their own hands dirty.
JenJen
C’mon y’all!! It was a positive comment!!

I would do it just to force a nym change once it is clear that the troll name is regularly recognized and derided immediately by regulars. Can that nym and make him come back under another so we can all try to guess what nym they are under next.
It would be a good game with regular trolls. Much better than letting them build any type of online ‘rep’ they would get by becoming a recognized regular. It also pisses them off for that very reason. They have to start over. And over. And over.
It’s a fun way to play with trolls instead of letting them become a recognizable fixture. I use it on the forums I manage and they get tired of it pretty fast. Some never do but they do get pissed at being regularly banned and forced to change things up to get back in.

@Karen:
Zionism started out as a legit ideology, one that eventually led to the creation of the State of Israel, and something that people didn’t mind identifying themselves as.
And no, it’s not always code for the K word: there are also people who use it the same way people on this blog use “Likudniks,” a way to differentiate the ideology from the group it sprang from, to say “we have a beef with this belief but we don’t have a beef with all Jews or Israelis as a people.” (Like when we say “Nazi,” “Communist” or “islamist” instead of saying “German,” “Russian” or “Muslim.”)
Mr Stagger Lee
@Reality Check: And there was outrage from all quaters about that. Oh BTW when Hugo Chavez called President Bush the devil, Democrats including then Senator Obama condemned Chavez.

Carter was actually a pretty damn good President, so I’d take worse than Carter, since that still leaves a lot of room between that and better than Reagan.

Ballon Juice has become a lot less interesting and relevant since trolls have been allowed and encouraged to hijack most threads.

@Corpsicle:
It’s seriously tiresome. The site would be helped, immensely, just by having a daily limit on the number of comments from any one IP address. Or at least a limit on replies per thread. It’s not uncommon to see people desperate for attention with 30 or 40 replies, enough to drown out everyone else.

Republican trolls do few things well in life, but one is taking a bad act committed by one of their own and flipping the script by dredging up some prior bad act by a Democrat. They put us on the defensive, for some reason, and think they can claim victory of us hypocrites.
Not me though. Some obscure Democrat called for Rick Scott to be put up against the wall and shot? So. Fucking. What. This is a published threat against the POTUS. There’s a law against that, you know.
I also couldn’t give a shit what the cute nickname du jour for Obama is around the right-wing noise machine. I called Bush an abortion of a president then and I would do the same today.
Apologizing for the truth never gets us anywhere.

@Jebediah: 100% classic for these hopeless losers. They all want to grow up to be chicken hawks and send other people’s children to war. They have “other priorities”, you see.
One of my favorite Salon threads was when I asked some flaming asshole young republican why he didn’t just enlist and put some skin in the game since he was such a warmonger. The idiot replied that the Airborne would be thrilled to have him and that he did have…. a DRAFT CARD! The hilarity that ensued over him “going to war and killing the evil brown people with his draft card” (fatal paper cuts?) was awesome. Even shut the little fucker up for awhile.
Chris
@steve:
What’s funny is the way this contrasts with their attitude towards “political correctness” and anything else that feels like it’s restricting their ability to hurl abuse on bitches, darkies and fairies. And who just tell them to “grow some thicker skin,” “get over it,” “tough it out” whenever they object.
But don’t anyone say mean things about them.

Yes, it was a stupid joke, in quite poor taste. As a young adult, she should really know better. However, saying that she called for Obama’s assassination is just silly.
As a side note, the guy that shot at the White House obviously wasn’t trying to assassinate Obama either. Obama wasn’t there. He’s just a mentally ill man with some sort of fixation on the White House.
Richard
In some sense, I feel sorry for her, because this highly public bit of idiocy is going to follow her around for a long, long time. She better hope that she gets a job with the GOP, because I suspect that any company that comes across this tweet isn’t going to be too keen on hiring her, even if they are 100% for conservative causes. Who wants a someone who is obviously a loose cannon around to potentially embarrass their brand?
Citizen Alan
@TooManyJens:
Because when someone is temporarily overcome with loathing towards another person, the first word that comes to mind via Pavlovian response is usually the most hateful, insulting thing you can say. From that point, it’s about whether you have the impulse control not to give into that initial Pavlovian response. Because when you really want to hurt someone with words, you go for the worst ones and you frequently don’t care about things like gender fairness or respect for cultural heritage.
Case in point: I had literally never uttered the C-word even once in my life prior to watching the 2008 GOP National Convention. I sat through Palin’s speech in mounting fury until she got to the bit about “community organizers” at which point I SCREAMED it at the TV at the top of my lungs. My roommate rushed in actually alarmed that I’d hurt myself. To my recollection, I have never used it since, though exposure to creatures like Michele Bachmann, Jan Brewer and other conservative traitors to their gender constantly prod the mental cage I keep it locked up in.

I hear that a lot about gay. For some reason using gay as an insult is no longer supposed to be offensive to gays because people can’t see the transitive properties of “to be.”

Late to the thread as always but I don’t know if anyone followed the ABC link in ABL’s post. I did, and then clicked a second one that talked about Ortega-Hernandez. In the space of 2 minutes the reporter managed to bring “drugs” into the story, as well as trying to tie him to those nefarious OWS protesters.
Getting less play was the fact he was routinely staying in Hampton Inns (that particular pattern was what helped law enforcement nab him so quickly).

I guess I missed that thread. I half can’t believe anybody would think something like that, and half rather depressingly know that lots of people do. There’s something about people who have taken a beating–metaphorically–that brings out the worst in some people. Instead of sympathizing with them, or wanting to help the victim, they feel contempt for them and, if anything, are pissed off that the victim didn’t suffer more. I guess that maybe a psychologist could tell us why this happens; I’d like to know what’s wrong with people like that that they can look at a 10 year old rape victim and feel like it was the rapist who somehow got the raw deal.

I wouldn’t be so sure about that. All right: I’ll admit it, I was a Young Republican in college for about eight weeks in 1993. I found it so boring and tedious that I ignored them after that. My suggestion that we’d better figure out our own actual economic policy before Clinton steamrolled us was not particularly well-thought of.
Anyways, wingnut welfare for a good-looking WASP female is very generous – there’s so few of them that Pierce literally is worth her weight in diamonds.
Women in college who are just looking for a rich husband don’t join the College Republicans, and certainly wouldn’t be a President of a very large important chapter like UT. Pierce is more than a little strange – in my experience, the young women in College Republicans are typically women gunning for Wall Street jobs and not ones aiming for a Mrs. degree. They’re typically Chicago School economics types. There are the conservative Catholic women grouping, but Pierce is dressed way too sexy to be in that crowd – and the conservative Catholic women tend to avoid leadership roles except in the narrower right to life organizations.
I would say she’s almost certainly aiming to be a Congressional/Senatorial staffer or on the wingnut welfare circuit.

I’ve been noticing a trend of late that the Christians are getting very insistent that they LOVE Israel (while at the same time trying to convert every single Jew to Christianity). I read yesterday, in a Jews for Judaism piece (a critique on Christian missionaries trying to convert Jews), that Replacement Theology was dead (I did a double take). I don’t think it’s dead so much as it’s gone underground and been replaced by a hypocritical LOVE of Israel.
