“My impression after talking to senior White House officials is that the president is going a little larger than we’ve been led to expect. I’m not authorized to give details of the plan, but I think it will be worth watching his speech because he will be making some news…
I believe the ideas in the president’s speech will be put into a Senate bill and it will move with Reid and Durbin’s leadership..
The president is going to spend the next couple of months pushing this bill, and we can either support him in those efforts or we can stand on the sidelines flinging poo.
I’ll let you make up your mind after you see the speech and learn what’s in the bill…”

I checked around to see various blog reactions before coming here. Over at TPM, Josh Marshall has apparently gone full media retard. His play-by-play may as well have been written by Maureen Dowd.
And over at DailyKos, Jed Lewison is pissed that Obama sold us out on Social Security. I admit my attention wandered a bit during the middle part about the deficit reductions, but I don’t remember Obama mentioning Social Security cuts. He did talk about Medicare reform. Did he discuss Social Security reform during this time, and I just missed it?

It was a very good speech. I don’t know how much it will accomplish to bring along the party that is okay with having America turn into a third-world nation if that prevents Obama’s re-election. In the days before the Republicans went full-on party-before-country Obama’s speech would have been likely to get enough co-operation from them to address some of the most stubborn effects of the downturn. Of course in those days it wouldn’t have been necessary for Obama to give such a speech three years after the economy crashed.

@eemom: Thanks for the rational comment. Much appreciated@AA+ Bonds: I agree.
There’s a lot of money in Medicare. A lot of competing interests, not all of them as noble and well-intentioned as they present themselves:
Obama in April proposed increasing the IPAB’s authority as an alternative to House Republicans’ Medicare overhaul. The president laid out a proposal he said would reduce the deficit by $4 trillion over 12 years, in large part by lowering the threshold when the IPAB kicks in Under the law, the IPAB issues recommendations that Congress must act on if the growth of Medicare costs exceeds a specific target.
Schwartz, a former healthcare executive and current vice president of the centrist New Democrat Coalition, is one of eight Democrats who have signed on to Republican legislation to repeal the provision. She said she spoke to the White House and fellow Democrats in Congress about her intention, and made it clear to them that she remains a strong advocate of the healthcare reform law.
Why oh why does anyone bother watching what the village hacks have to say about anything? They’re only there for each other. Watching them just encourages them.
Chris Matthews, the usually garrulous host of “Hardball” on MSNBC, has quietly signed a new long-term contract to remain with the cable network through the next election, signaling that he had quit entertaining any plans to run for a Senate seat.[…] Previous reports put his annual salary at about $5 million.
I believe I read that his wife pulls down over a million a year as a local anchor.

@Elizabelle: Yea when Tweety started talking about how fake it was when the President inferred he would be hurting if his taxes got raised, I decided to watch college football instead of kicking Tweety in the shins. If I care enough later, I can certainly watch the re-runs later.
I don’t mind him as much as the rest of them. I don’t watch him anymore, either, but I don’t think he’s completely horrible and repulsive. He has some essential goofiness that saves him from soul-dead ghoul, somehow.
@kay: Oh, I know, and I have absolutely no problem with Obama talking about making fixes to it – but why in the fuck does he always make it sound like Dems don’t want that? It is patently false, for one thing, and for another it reinforces a Republican talking point, which Obama – who seems to want to be above any party (grrr) – does regularly. It’s dumb factually and politically.
EDIT: Let me alte that to “mostly false.” Dems aren’t perfect, of course.
@drew42: I didn’t hear anything about SS. Only Medicare and Medicaid.
I think allowing the gov’t to negotiate drug prices would save a lot of money. Not all, if any, of the savings need to come from cutting services.

Boehner’s look said “Whatever, dude. Hope you had fun just now, because this is going nowhere”.
very funny and also true
what bothers me about this speech is the bar was set too low to save this country in the end, there is no need to co-opt the republican message about diddling with Medicare/caid. I can’t think cuts to these programs as being anything but cruel and it’s not a good place to start the discussion about job growth. cutting social programs results in layoffs of government workers, which is happening in these states unfortunate enough to be run by teabaggers (incl. mine), and adding to unemployment rolls. how many of those people (and the layoffs to come) will be going back to work? just sayin.
i better go now before i get called a firebaggeremoprog – i can only say i just don’t want to see my party, as whole, set a low bar because it’s just going to make things harder going forward
I see the problem with it politically, but it’s not dumb factually. It’s true.
Some Democrats in Congress don’t want the IPAB in Medicare, not because they’re humanitarians or crazy about single-payer, but because they’re bought and paid for by portions of the for-profit health care industry.
A lot (maybe most) Democrats are genuinely committed to Medicare, and (understandably) freak out when anyone says “cost controls”, under a sort of slippery slope-type fear. True. But that’s not the whole story.
The IPAB is a last resort for controlling the cost of health care (not health insurance). Congress tried it their way for the last 25 years. They failed. Three separate times they failed, with legislation. I think it’s sad they failed, and it’s an indication of how badly Congress is broken, but the fact is, they couldn’t resist provider lobbyists and they failed.
But I agree it’s a political problem, because they’re not all singing from the same hymnal. He’s telling the truth, though. On that, I’m convinced.
No name calling from me. The Obot/firebagger/emoprog/etc. bullshit is simply people trying to assert that their points of view make them the real Democrats.
As for setting the bar low, my opinion is that we could discover tomorrow that the moon is composed of precious metals, rare earths, and the cure for cancer but this Congress would withhold funds for so much as a cheap skyrocket anyway.
But I agree it’s a political problem, because they’re not all singing from the same hymnal. He’s telling the truth, though. On that, I’m convinced.
I edited to acknowledge that. And I don’t at all mind the idea of him busting Dem balls – behind closed doors. Or, to do it without acting like he’s not the freaking leader of the Democratic Party and doing it fundamental harm by reinforcing Republican talking points on this and other issues.

Good speech. None of this will even come up to a vote.
But will the GOP pay for that in 14 months?

A classic from the always entertaining Sully:
I can’t say I dislike Boehner either. So far, the Speaker with that wonderful tanned, drinking, smoking face has emerged as personally far more likable than Pelosi.
he suffers from some mild form of multiple personality disorder.
That’s the part I like. That he makes a jackass of himself. That he’s erratic, and often unprofessional. I’m so sick of that bored fake-sophisticate stuff they all pretend to.
It’s not even true that they’re sophisticated. They’re rigidly conventional. They get all upset when anyone, anywhere goes off script. Members of the local Rotary Club are free and easy bohemians compared to Halperin, who seems to be enforcing some strict code of conduct he invented.

@Valdivia: New version has a button at the bottom of the page. You highlight the pie-lover to-be, and click the button, and it auto-adds that person to the filter.
You can also remove a person from the filter with the other button, temporarily to see if they’ve become non-stupid. It makes my monthly checks of pie lovers easier, not that I’ve ever permanently removed a person from the pie filter.

300+ comments in, not much hope, I know — but does anyone know who/when there’ll be a rerun of the speech?
Or, to do it without acting like he’s not the freaking leader of the Democratic Party
Right. But he wants the Democratic Party to get behind the legislation they drafted and passed, and that legislation includes the IPAB. For deficit reduction negotiations, it’s a no-brainer, because it’s already baked in. It’s an “offer” they can make that they already counted, once.
Republicans know this, which is why they’re working really hard to repeal that portion of the legislation. What’s interesting is, they haven’t done it yet, and they have a majority in the House. That means the Senate Democrats are holding together.
I see the political risk, just as I saw the political risk when they took on Medicare Advantage. I remember the day I read that they were taking 500 billion from Medicare Advantage for PPACA. I knew the GOP was going to use it, and I knew it would be effective as an attack. Democrats paid dearly for that. It was still the right thing to do.
spitzer did a pretty good job of summing up the speech in the last 30 seconds of olbermann’s show tonight. he ain’t gettin’ a whitehouse xmas card this year.
@Jay in Oregon: I like Ed, we need someone who yells once in awhile. We have been run over by the loud mouths for years. Apparently being polite does not work, it is time to get noisy. I am sick of hands off politics, the gloves need to come off. These R’s are trying to kill this country. I know we can do better. These guys are stripping this country. Do not shut one voice down. You can disagree, but honestly he is from MN and we are a friendly sort.
What would I do if I were Obama? … I’d go all in. Nothing he is going to propose tonight is going to get passed without being watered down to nothing. The House and Senate dysfunction will see to it. So go for it. Use the speech to propose everything you can. Massive infrastructure spending, extension of unemployment benefits that will be automatically renewed every six months until unemployment is under 7%, a public investment back to free up capital for small business, you name it. GO BIG.
There, I just watched the video. I think this is political posturing, but I think it’s the best kind of political posturing. He timed it just when the campaign season is starting, and saved up (there’s no official limit, but you can damn well be sure after this the GOP will try to stop any more) one of his joint session requests for it. He offered some great policies, but concentrated almost entirely on rhetoric suggesting that if the Republicans don’t pass this, they’re hypocrites and want to hurt the American middle class that everyone thinks they’re a part of. The odds of this being passed are minute, but if Obama pulls off that miracle we get a desperately needed jobs bill. If it doesn’t pass, he’s started the campaign season by putting the GOP in a humiliating bind, while further exercising some of his best rhetoric (and what I think is his most successful meme, that rich people need to pay their ‘fair share’). It’s an elegantly timed win/win. That is some 11-dimensional motherfucking chess. It’s like his combined birth-certificate/Trump slapdown/Bin Ladin catch. The man really knows how to bide his time and pick a good target.

@RalfW: There were two guests on NPR this morning discussing the speech – one was an economist, and the other was some Tea Party guy from “Job Creators For America” or some such bullshit. The Teabagger’s take on a speech focused on cutting taxes, reducing regulation, and spending that is paid for: “it was more of the same – raising taxes, more regulation, and massive defecits”.
They don’t even need their talking points to reflect reality anymore. They just fucking lie.

The President’s Speech
by BooMan
“My impression after talking to senior White House officials is that the president is going a little larger than we’ve been led to expect. I’m not authorized to give details of the plan, but I think it will be worth watching his speech because he will be making some news…
I believe the ideas in the president’s speech will be put into a Senate bill and it will move with Reid and Durbin’s leadership..
The president is going to spend the next couple of months pushing this bill, and we can either support him in those efforts or we can stand on the sidelines flinging poo.
I’ll let you make up your mind after you see the speech and learn what’s in the bill…”

Some Democrats don’t want Medicare to function well. There’s a business-friendly coalition in the House who are trying to join with Republicans to gut the IPAB (Independent payment advisory board) in the health care reform act because those business-friendly Democrats are bought and paid for by provider lobbyists.
It’s been an ongoing battle for months. It gets no media attention, but it’s huge. To listen to these business-friendly Democrats’ statements, one would think they don’t want to “change” Medicare. And they don’t. Because the lobbyists they serve are making a killing on it.

Of course in those days it wouldn’t have been necessary for Obama to give such a speech three years after the economy crashed.

what bothers me about this speech is the bar was set too low to save this country in the end, there is no need to co-opt the republican message about diddling with Medicare/caid. I can’t think cuts to these programs as being anything but cruel and it’s not a good place to start the discussion about job growth. cutting social programs results in layoffs of government workers, which is happening in these states unfortunate enough to be run by teabaggers (incl. mine), and adding to unemployment rolls. how many of those people (and the layoffs to come) will be going back to work? just sayin.

@LT:

The Obot/firebagger/emoprog/etc. bullshit is simply people trying to assert that their points of view make them the real Democrats.

boss bitch
@SiubhanDuinne:
I beg your pardon. I meant his lack of a chin.
kay
@LT:

Tonal Crow
