I think one of the dynamics in the current (ZOMG, the actual election is 15 fucking months away!) Presidential campaign is that, despite all the grousing on the left, there is no serious primary challenge to the sitting President.
This means that for horse-race action, the Village has only the Rethugs to depend on, so creating maximum drama in the name of sacred ratings (and the sacred dollars that flow from them) is what it’s all about. Still, it’s amazing how the focus on the Iowa straw poll was first that Michelle Bachmann won, and that T-Paw fared so poorly that he dropped out. Little mention of no Oven Mitt, and Ron Paul might as well be running for office in Kazakhstan somewhere. There are some things the corporate media don’t just don’t want to talk about.
Also, too, there was the entire “look at me, me and my fabulous hair are in the race” Perry phenomenon…

This little tidbit reminded me that the Republicans are so dedicated to opposing and obstructing the Democrats, and preventing them from governing, that they don’t care that citizens may be hurt or put at any disadvantage while this titanic struggle continues. They just don’t care.
When the Republicans battled Obama over the extension of the Bush tax cuts, unemployment benefits and other issues, they ended up forcing the IRS to delay creating necessary forms and schedules, and so,
Maybe the GOP figured that people would stop dying in 2010.

I’m glad the current financial situation of the country didn’t enter into Michelle Obama’s mind as she took separate motorcades and an earlier jet to Martha’s Vineyard. We certainly wouldn’t want any consideration of the optics to keep her and the kids from enjoying a few extra hours on the Cape.
Regardless of what people say, I still firmly believe Obama will carry Hawaii in 2012.

In the Palin video I linked to above, I notice she’s going with the mama grizzly theme, as she ends it with a big scary bear standing up in the woods. And I immediately recalled Reagan’s spooky old ad “A Bear In The Woods.”
The wording from Reagan’s old ad oddly fits the Palin pseudo-campaign:

Villago Delenda Est

You know, you could apply that entire “bear in the woods” thing to global climate change, and the wingtards would totally miss the point.
But apply it to “the bear” in the woods (who growls with an accent like Boris Badenov) and they immediately give you a “hell yes!”

The “both sides do it” false equivalency has now bled through to the WaPo’s sports section; read Sally Jenkins “both sides do it/we’ll never know the real cause” article concerning the Chinese military versus Georgetown Hoyas basketball game that turned into a brawl. Then watch the Youtube clip, note that the foul count was 58 (!) to 14, and also note that prior to the brawl one of the Chinese players walked up to the Georgetown coach during play and started mouthing off to him. But “we’ll never fully know”.

Rep. Gene Green (D-Texas) blogged in “The Hill” today that he had noticed a troubling pattern among the 222 postal outlets that are on the chopping block in his state. “Every single facility mentioned is located in a lower income and predominately minority neighborhood,” he wrote.

Sarah Palin sounds just like a politician, until you try to get some substance out of what she’s saying in that video. (I actually tried, silly me.)

@Violet:
I think that’s a strong likelihood; in the anyone but Mitt crowd, Perry hasn’t exactly had a wonderful entry into the race. Palin is loved by her base.

@The Dangerman:
I’m not sure she will win the nomination if she does run. She’s lost a lot of fans and GOP insiders and strategists, as well as most of the Village press corpse have turned against her. Maybe she can win them over if/when she runs, but things like the Memorial Day bus tour have been described as destructive to Republicans and the Republican brand. And the press wasn’t happy with being jerked around and not given her schedule, etc. (I know, they didn’t have to follow her like lemmings, but since they did, she created a real hassle for everyone by not making her schedule public and they didn’t appreciate it.)
There’s a lot of negative stuff on Palin and if she does decide to run, the GOP power brokers won’t be afraid to use it. Her un-seriousness and aversion to work won’t assist her on the campaign trail either.
Gonna be fun to watch.

@efgoldman:
Well, maybe. But who’s left voting Republican these days? Pretty much old people who’ve always voted GOP and crazy people. And there’s some crossover there.
Mitt’s Mormon and that doesn’t endear him to a solid GOP voting bloc, the evangelicals. He’s going to have a hard time drumming up enthusiasm in the south. Little by little the crazies will quit the race and it’ll be Mittster against a crazy. I can see this being a re-run of the 2008 Democratic nomination where it wasn’t decided until the end of the primary season. Or, if things get really ugly and war is declared in the GOP, the convention might be the site of some interesting back room dealings.
RandyH
I think the big event on Sep 3 is actually a big Tea Party rally thing sponsored by the Koch-heads. But Sarah will dominate the thing, no doubt. If she’s going to announce, she’d better be prepared to do it there. Expect it to be a big religious-revival type event that Rick Perry couldn’t draw the crowds for, but she can.
If she runs, I suspect she will be the Hope and Change campaign (like Obama’s ’08 campaign,) with lots of religion and folksy stuff symbolized by a grizzly bear that’s about to rip Liberal heads off. I just can’t wait. She should be able to push Bachmann and Perry out. Their funding could just dry up before there’s ever a single primary. I could be wrong but that’s my two cents, anyway.
Villago Delenda Est
@RandyH:
The thing about Sarah is that I think she’s of two minds about this:
On one hand, there’s the grifter seeking to milk the marks for every last penny she can extract…which means dancing to the edge of being an actual candidate, then pulling back. Newt Gingrich’s model in 2008.
On the other hand, there’s the “it’s my density” to be the next President thing.
Which impulse will she follow through on? That’s the $64 question, right there.

It is true that she is a grifter. But that doesn’t mean she’s completely predictable.
Grifters A) are inherently short-sighted, and Palin herself is surrounded by stories of how fast she burns bridges. Robbing a green room filled with gifts for herself, anyone?
Grifters B) are famous for falling for their own hype. Cults tend to be started by grifters who eventually go ‘Hey, maybe I AM the son of god!’ Scientology is a beautiful example. Palin is also surrounded by stories of how arrogant and vengeful she is. It’s not hard to imagine her going ‘I deserve to be president!’ To a narcissist like that, if she ‘deserves’ it then it had better be handed to her on a platter or she’ll throw a fit.
So basically, the counterargument is ‘Sure, it’s all about what’s best for Sarah Palin… but she may not be smart enough to know what that is.’

Me being me I picked two parsley plants that had caterpillars on them so I added to my ever growing family. The boys went through the pots in short order so today I picked up two bunches of parsley at Food Lion and noticed that they had some herbs in pots. As I was inspecting the pots of dill for the healthiest looking plant I noticed a little guy on the dill, there was actually a black swallowtail caterpillar on a dill plant wrapped in plastic in a grocery store. You have to be amazed at the sheer resilience of Mother Natures critters sometimes. (And yes I brough him home and added him to my family). It’s raining in NYC right now — large, black clouds filling the sky. Rain and wind coming from the northwest, lightning and thunder. Mother nature must like us and how we live. I’ve got to conclude this from the fact that we have variable weather and we (mostly) let people live they way they want. I really think Gov. Perry has to ease up on the god-bothering; I don’t think she likes it much.
ETA: My terrace is 8 feet deep — the rain is hitting the living room windows.

In a previous thread there was a discussion about that BoA dude telling Perry, “We will help you out”. Some theorized that because the guy was on the council that co-sponsored the event, he may have meant that “we” will help Perry and his team get out of the event and to their cars.
Well, here’s the official word from BoA (via WSJ’s MarketBeat blog):
Bank of America spokesman Lawrence Di Rita responds:
“Bank of America does not endorse Presidential candidates. The reference was about following up on the substance of his speech about job creation and economic growth. Discussing policy issues that affect our company and our customers is something we do with policymakers of both parties routinely at the local, state, and Federal levels.”
I might have bought the “help him get out” theory. But this official response? Really? Really? And, seriously – Larry Di Fucking Rita? Really?

If there’s anyone out there who hasn’t seen this yet, I came across it again today and my dog, it’s freaking funny.

@OGLiberal: hahaha..The company laying off 10,000 is going to talk about job growth…. hahaha
Sarah is going to have problems with the family values group, imo, Bristol’s baby was an accident and possible rape(yeah right) but her son having an 8 pound pre-mature baby after being married 3 months seems unlikely. At some point someone is going to ask what type of abstinence only does this family not understand.
I don’t mind if babies are born between consenting adults but I do mind the excuses they give.

Also too, I want rain like Purple Girl and I want bread like John makes. Is that asking to much………..

Yeah, creating a presidential job for Perry which they hope will create economic growth for BoA.

Thank you for that link. Great pictures!

@Villago Delenda Est: Rowdy — my friends’ cat — lead me to the top of the basement stairs one day; on the top step was a dead bird. Rowdy looked up at me with a big grin on his face. I went and got some newspaper and picked up the bird to take outside to the garbage. I thanked Rowdy for the present and told him he that while I appreciated the thought, he didn’t have to give me any more birds. He never did and we stayed good friends.

@JPL:
The cognitive dissonance is strong with these ones.
I don’t think they’ll even hesitate for a moment.
Sarah’s got that group. Facts won’t stop that.

@Just Some Fuckhead:
Bank of Amafia can use all the help it can get. They announced today that they’re laying off 3500 workers and selling off assets. Borging up Countrywide turned out to be a really bad move.

@OGLiberal:
Rumsfeld’s stooge is now at Bank of America, huh? Those dirtbags always manage to find work, don’t they?
OGLiberal
@Villago Delenda Est: These people don’t give a shit if kids have sex or have it before marriage – if they did they’d be for sex education beyond, “if you have sex before marriage you’ll make Jesus cry”. They’d be more than happy with the “old days”, where girls got married off at 13 or 14, pumped out 8-10 kids, then died in childbirth at 36. (after which husband would marry another teenager and repeat the process) Here is all that matters – the Palin kids didn’t use birth control and they didn’t abort their babies. That trumps any concerns about pre-marital sex. They’re heroes in the eyes of the god squaders.

@Just Some Fuckhead:
Ratfuckers as dishonest AND successful in propogating their lies as GG can be pretty upsetting. Half the false Obama bashing narratives (particularly his ‘bad record on civil liberties’) come from GG and are spread because people assume he’s speaking honestly as an expert.
Villago Delenda Est
@aimai:
Yup, the fact is, Sarah doesn’t have the campaign staff lined up, or even potentially lined up, to pull it off.
The thing is, she’s clueless, in her “let’s put on a tea party in the garage, kids!” sort of way about this situation.
Just means more popcorn for us.

@Villago Delenda Est:
More like those old movies starring Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney; “We’ll put on a show!” And in the next scene they have sets, costumes and a full orchestra. Palin and her followers do all know the words though.
Villago Delenda Est
@OGLiberal:
Actually, they do care. But the point is, the sluts (after all, boys will be boys…) need punishment for their wantoness. That’s what the forced childbirth is all about.
The children themselves are utterly irrelevant.
Birth control means that the punishment for being a slut is removed. So contraception is bad…which means Planned Parenthood is bad, regardless of any abortion services they might provide, taxpayer funded or not.
OGLiberal
@Villago Delenda Est: Yeah, you’re right. And that’s true for rank and file sluts. But I don’t think they viewed Bristol Palin as a slut who needed to be punished. They viewed her as the innocent victim of that slimeball Levi (who became a slimeball after he turned on St. Sarah) who was heroic enough to have the baby as a single mom even though she knew that Levi was a good-for-nothing deadbeat.
Frankensteinbeck
@Villago Delenda Est:
I disagree. It’s about protecting their own daughters – even purely hypothetical daughters – from ever having sex. That idea is horrifying to them because they view sex as a man using and defiling a woman, because that’s how they view it when THEY do it. This fear is increased because their daughters are more their property than people. Punishing sluts may be in the mix, but actual hate is only the frosting on the cake of not caring one way or the other about people.
They want their daughters to never find out about sex so that they can never have sex. Their attitudes on censorship and sex education all point to that. Only the craziest elements react to ‘stay in the kitchen’ dialog that indicates controlling women is their true goal.
To put it another way, like almost everything else about the Conservative Movement, it’s about projection.
Villago Delenda Est
@OGLiberal:
Well, the daughters of OUR Sarah (and Sarah herself) because they are OURS of course don’t count in this calculation.
That’s the cognitive dissonance kicking in full throttle.

@Derf: My God, you’re a tiresome bore who repeats the same crappy comment over and over. Do yourself a favor and please stop — you’re embarrassing yourself.
Villago Delenda Est
@Frankensteinbeck:
So, in your analysis….it’s about controlling women. That’s how your first paragraph reads to me.
Am I reading you right on this? Which means we’re not very far apart on this entire thing.
Frankensteinbeck
@Villago Delenda Est:
No, it’s about protecting their loved ones, their property, and by extension themselves from their own hateful lusts. That it involves restricting a woman’s free choice is incidental. They’ve never cared about other people of any kind’s free choice.
Derf
@Anya: I know you are obsessed by me. Why else would you be aware of every single thing I post. So thanks for the compliment my little groupie.
dollared
@Frankensteinbeck: Yeah, that’s right, because Obama is great on civil liberties. Hunh?
Frankensteinbeck
@Villago Delenda Est:
Let me try and make the distinction another way. Controlling women is not an end in and of itself. It is only a tool highlighting their lack of believing that anyone deserves to make their own decisions. In this case the tool’s purpose is to protect their daughters from rape, because they view all sex as rape. Which, if you turn it around, explains how they react to rape.
Frankensteinbeck
@dollared:
Pretty good. Every argument I’ve heard otherwise came from GG either A) treating a rumor as an established fact or B) not telling his readers how the law actually works, which is his job.
Just Some Fuckhead
@Frankensteinbeck: You know GG has open comments right?
eemom
Ya know, I was gonna respond in kind to fuckie’s characteristically stupid ass taunting — and then I said to myself, why bother?
Just one thing, little fucklet: the hell hath no fury thing doesn’t work, cuz I never loved Jane. I just used to read her blog. Still occasionally have a look, only to keep up on the level of batshit.
Dayum. This zen is some good shit, WHEREVER you can get it.
Villago Delenda Est
@Frankensteinbeck:
Then they should have no problem with the “don’t like abortion? Don’t have one!” meme.
But, in fact, they do. It’s not just about controlling their own women who are seen as property. The bad examples, unrelated to them in any way, MUST be punished, as well, to reinforce it for their own property.
It IS about other people, not just their own “loved” ones, and the “love” they practice isn’t very loving, IMHO.
Frankensteinbeck
@Just Some Fuckhead:
And? I’ve heard GG argue. He’s come here to argue, or at least throw around insults. He’s not big on reasoned debate. I’m not particularly interested in endlessly arguing with the people who are directly fans of his on his blog. I don’t enjoy trolling.
On the other hand, it’s worth making it clear *here*, where the liberal moderates I’m interested in talking to gather, that GG is not honest and cannot be relied upon. I couldn’t make GG honest by putting a gun to his head, but I can make an effort to correct lies he spreads when I hear them from people who aren’t starting from the assumption that the government is evil. And when someone asks why anyone would get upset about GG, I can explain exactly why.
dollared
@Frankensteinbeck: @Frankensteinbeck: So help me out here. I’m still hearing about Obama continuing with the state secrets defense, covering up both corruption and crimes. I’m still hearing about presidential execution orders. I’m still hearing about unlimited surveillance of American citizens’ emails and telephone calls.
That concerns me and is one reason why I read GG. So can you explain to me why I am wrong to be concerned?
