Cleek reminded me yesterday about a local band called Muler. All proceeds from their current album go to a worth charity, and Bandcamp gives you a free listen, so if you’re interested, give it a shot. A lot of indy bands are using Bandcamp and I really like it. It lets you listen to a whole song (not a 30 second snippet), bands set their own prices, and Bandcamp takes a flat 15% of what the band sells. In other words, it’s fair. Here’s an open thread for a holiday weekend.

Anyone else notice Egypt opened their blockade to Gaza?
Egypt permanently opens Gaza border crossing
“Egypt lifted a four-year-old blockade on the Gaza Strip’s main link to the outside world Saturday, bringing relief to the crowded territory’s 1.5 million Palestinians but deepening a rift with Israel since the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak earlier this year.

The Egyptian move will allow thousands of Gazans to move freely in and out of the area — heightening Israeli fears that militants and weapons could easily reach its doorstep.”

Actually, thanks for the Band Camp ref.

I predict that’s gonna be a huge site if they get a better search function and more bands.

I really like the idea of the artists getting my money and will spend more if I know that’s true.

This link is from Meteor Blades at GOS. Scroll down to the second letter and read the “modest proposal” from a school superintendent.

and just FYI, the charity is The Grant Fund, which is dedicated to research and prevention sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)

seems like a good way to spend $9.

not a single republican voted for this clinton budget act. it passed by one vote in 1993. it raised taxes. and it kick-started the economy.

raising taxes on the wealthy motivates them to expand their operations to increase revenue, so they can return to their former, pre-raised tax levels of opulence. when they expand their operations, that creates jobs.

ever watch poker? about 2/3 of the way through a given table stakes game, the guy with the largest winnings starts “buying the pot”. he raises the ante until the other players drop out. they may have better cards, but they can’t afford the ante. capitalism also works like this. the biggest player wins, not always the best.

actually, what republicans call “capitalism” is historically known as “feudalism”. Lord Koch buys the pot!

In which the California Chamber of Commerce (petty criminal little brother to the felonious US COC) rends its garments over 28 (count ‘em, 28) “job-killer” bills.

Here are two of those killers:

AB 59 (Swanson; D-Alameda) Family and Medical Leave Expansion

Creates an increased burden on employers and makes a California-only mandated benefit different than the federal family leave act by significantly expanding the category of individuals with serious health conditions for whom an employee can take a leave of absence.

AB 325 (B. Lowenthal; D-Long Beach) Unpaid Bereavement Leave

Adds to California’s reputation of being an overly litigious state by creating a private right of action and mandating an employer to provide an employee with up to four days of unpaid bereavement leave.

Special note for the learning impaired: these two job-killin’ leave programs are unpaid. The mechanism by which they kill dem jobs remains unclear.

Dave weigel is at his brother’s commencement. Apparently, the president is a douche:

UDel pres sez average salary in the world is $12k, so grads will be above average, “I don’t care how bad this economy is.” #fail

Via twittertubes (seen by The Somebody)

  16. PurpleGirl - May 28, 2011 | 12:20 pm · Link

@arguingwithsignposts: Okay, then when is the UDel president going to reduce his salary to the world average of $12,000? (And maybe give up his other bennies—like the housing allowance/house he probably gets, his health insurance, his retirement account, the delayed compensation, etc.?)

This chart on the total increase in health care spending under “Ryancare” is a must-see. It’s not just about out-of-pocket costs or insurance premiums hitting seniors harder – it’s about total expenditures. This is insane…

A friend of mine from college -Joe Tunis – plays on the new Muler record and also runs Carbon Records, which released it. He and Muler (probably) played at my apartment back in my RIT days. Small world. Anyway, the new Muler record is well worth the listen.

Has anyone else seen Herzog’s new flic, ‘The Cave of Forgotten Dreams’? That man is just getting weirder. The ending is unbelievable, I just laughed and laughed. Herzog and Wes Anderson might be the same person. Ultimately, I’m glad it was this nutty German existentialist that was allowed to document the beginnings of human representational art rather than some boring National Geographic crew.

On a topic of some importance to an estimated 300 million people today…the Champions League final.

And I must ask: Where’s Randinho to welcome his devoted and football-besotted readers?

I’m heading out to a tapas bar to enjoy (expectedly) a Barcelona victory.

    @SiubhanDuinne:

I might need to think on it for a day or two, but I think I might love the ending. At the very least, it’s so fucked in the head that you can’t be neutral about it.

Just had a canvasser here from Working America, the new organization set up by Rich Trumka and the AFL-CIO to do grassroots issues organizing. When he reized how friendly a household he had come across, he had some baffling and amazing stories about his discussions with Real Merkins here in Beaver County. I was heartened to see that the young man was smart and attractive and well trained in how to draw these people into a discussion about where their interests lie. And they request real action on the spot. If you agree, they have you write a letter to your state legislator and wait while you do it. I was thrilled to see he had a dozen besides mine. That’s a significant number, considering the vast majority would decline to take the time or effort for a letter. Marcellus Shale and education are huge concerns around here. And I don’t know anybody who disagrees with the notion that perhaps a tax on drillers would more than cover everything being cut from education. Tom Corbett has really stepped in it.

@Loneoak: I liked the film, but the epilogue had me scratching my head. As usual, I didn’t get it, and I figured it was one of those continental film things that I’m supposed to appreciate but am too daft to get. All I could think was, thank goodness this part is coming at the very end and not at the beginning so I wouldn’t be distracted by it longer than 2 minutes.

  32. jeffreyw - May 28, 2011 | 1:54 pm · Link

@robertdsc-PowerBook: Not sure how to answer that except with the tautology: Tastes like french toast with strawberries. I forgot I had whipped cream, that would turn it into more of a dessert. Some portion of the strawberries could have been reduced in a simple syrup-this would improve the dish somewhat. Probably look prettier as well.

  33. Loneoak - May 28, 2011 | 2:07 pm · Link

    @Suffern ACE:

I’m not sure what the hell Herzog wanted to impart with the epilogue, but I am sure that it was hilarious because it was so Herzog-y. My best stab at his meaning was that long stretches of time exceed our ability to maintain a continuity of meaning. The white crocodiles are an analogy for the impossibility of knowing what either the past or future held/will hold, and thus what the meaning of our traces might be.

I was pretty high though, so results may vary.
