I’m sure Jack Shafer and Matt Welch think this is funny too (courtesy of reader T).
The is from the head of the Danville (VA) Tea Party, who burned Democratic congressman Tom Perriello in effigy last year. He’s referencing an attack on Perriello’s family last year, in which a propane line was cut.
Update. One of you couldn’t see it in his feed. Here it is there:

Wow.
It takes a lot to render me effectively speechless at someone’s repugnant loathesomeness, but that did it. How much of a fucking sociopath do you have to be to think it’s even okay to make that joke?
There really ought to be a line beyond which a person gets completely shunned by society. Conservatives keep managing to push that line out further and further all the time.

When Obama is reelected, then the shit will really hit the fan. Double that if the wingnuts don’t win the senate, and triple it if they don’t win the senate and also happen to lose the House, again.

Stay classy! But yeah, if your comeback to to aspersions on your character is something to the effect of “at least I didn’t gun down tons of people” you probably need a long hard look in the mirror.
Violet
@Catsy:
Me too. I think my jaw actually dropped when I read it.
What is wrong with these people? Have they no sense of decency? They should be held out as examples of loathsomeness. The media should ask them repeatedly to explain their statements and if they continue to stand by them. They should also be shunned.
Redshift
Yeah, dude, I’m sure that once we get a little further past the attempted assassination of a U.S. Congresswoman, joking about an unsuccessful assassination attempt by a member of your group will be just hilarious.
But at least we can thank him for making the connection that draws shrieks from every other teabagger when we make it.
WarMunchkin
You know, we’ve all seen kids go through the phase where they use the word “kill” in reference to things or people they don’t like. But eventually most people grow out of that, even if they think dark thoughts from time to time. I can’t get over the shock of this being the basis for humor for an entire half of the country. Oh, and you’re infringing on freedom of speech if you don’t laugh at their ‘joke’.

The real problem is that the social mechanisms for enforcing those boundaries have completely broken down in the age of “he said, she said”.
When Ann Coulter first said “I think a baseball bat is the most effective way these days” to talk to liberals, that should have been the end of her career. The same goes for Sharron Angle and her “Second Amendment remedies” remark.
I haven’t watched Rachel Maddow recently, but it used to flabbergast me that she would have Pat Robertson on her show — frankly, calling him “Crazy Uncle Pat” all the time doesn’t mitigate that fact that he is a bigot and should never be allowed in front of a camera.

Exactly. The conservative politicians and pundits who advocate second amendment remedies to political problems and the lefties who shrilly decry such language both must chill the fuck out!
Actually, I retract that. If lefties weren’t so shrill in condemning violent language, righties would never have been forced to exercise their constitutional right to free speech to remind us of their constitutional right to bear arms for the purpose of exercising their Declaration of Independence Right to overthrow the government when liberals get voted into office.

@The Populist:
He’s wondering if it’s too soon since global warming is obviously false since it’s snowing outside my window and Algore is fat, so do we go to alternative energies now or later. Personally I am all for policies that make my twice daily run at the pump to fill up my Hummer go much quicker.
Man, do I have to explain everything to you people?

@stuckinred: and IIRC Periello carried Danville in both elections.

@TaMara (BHF):
That’s awful, even worse than what I expected from her page.

@Stillwater:
It wasn’t the right wing paramilitary and ultra-nationalist groups in 1920s Germany’s fault that there were all these elected leaders who didn’t seem to think WW1 was a great idea and that there should be no peace treaties with anyone. They were provoked into murdering hundreds of people they considered as traitors and Jews. And whose fault is that? The people stirring up the hate with all their democratic government and shit.

@Omnes Omnibus: Ohhh you speak truth.
When I first moved to MA, I was driving with a local. I was about to turn left, and tipped the indicator.
“What did you do that for?”
“Turn signal. I’m turning.”
“Why do you want to give information to the enemy?”
True story.

@TaMara (BHF):
Even for Palin fans that is too over the top. I call spoof.

Whether or not this particular nutbag is a “true conservative” is irrelevant.
Fact is, GOP rhetoric is tilted heavily towards… shall we say delusional, well armed paranoia? (Trying to be polite, here.)
The point of that is to scare normal people into believing in death panels, the Amero, the New Black Panthers, the Nazi/Communist/Muslim in the White House, and manipulate that lizard brain tribal fear into electoral victories.
I would submit that it is entirely predictable that the crazies out there will interpret this differently than Soccer Mom/Dad, who is content to vote for racist morons because (s)he is just sort of deep-down afraid of those swarthy “others”.
Do I think Palin or Beck is responsible for that atrocity in Tuscon? Fuck, no. I am not Douchehat or Bai’s strawman.
But neither am I a complete fucking moron. I think their poisonous, eliminationist rhetoric gives an alibi/excuse/justification in advance to the Lone Wolves out there. I think they understand that, and fundamentally don’t give a shit because “MY TRIBE WINS”.
Come on, Lee Harvey was no Bircher, but I don’t think it’s a stretch to think that all the billboards and full-page ads in the Dallas papers about “JFK: Wanted for treason” might have led that sorry fuck to think, “Well, I’m not alone…”
Ditto Ray, and McVeigh also.
Honestly, I think (hope?) this republic is a hell of a lot deeper and stronger than Weimar. What I do know is that we’re going to find out in the next few years.

sic, “Tucscon”. [I try to hold to better standards than say, the Atlantic, no offense meant to Coates or Fallows.)
Doug-Michael Vick Hater (you’re worse than Tucker, you know),
Keep up with the glibertarian beatdowns. Sad to say, but those fuckers are killing this country better and faster than even the professional racists and nutjob gunmen. Though I have a bad feeling the latter will give them a run for their money.
No, you’re not worse than Tucker. (!) I am a Dolphins fan who has loved the Saints as my NFC team since 1980, so I am just full of hate when it comes to the NFL right now. To the Seahawks!?!

@handy:
What people? The American People? Thanks for admitting you have zero honor.
Sorry, I don’t need anything explained. Guess what, it’s climate change tard and it means as the polar caps melt, the sea currents get colder and the weather patterns change for the worse. Areas that get hot, get snow, areas that are desert like (arid) get colder. I could explain more to you but I see you are not the brightest crayon in the box.

@Makewi:
“Then it’s a good thing he won’t be re-elected. The other good thing will be that violent rhetoric will become acceptable again. It’s a win for everyone.”
Strange time to start expressing electoral power fantasies.
Though it’s the confused reference to ‘violent rhetoric’ that makes me hope that you yourself don’t have a Glock and a grudge against a Democratic politician in your local area.
What, too soon for me to mock the fate of your poor fellowtraveller Mr Loughner?
kay
@Makewi:
That’s a real tell, Makewi. Confronted with a conservative leader’s incredibly offensive joke you turn to conservative’s electoral chances in 2012. Way to Win! Goooo Team!
I’m curious, though. Is the investigation into which conservative activist entered private property and opened a propane line still active? The morons targeted the wrong family, but that won’t matter, ultimately. This looks to me like an admission.
The Populist
@Nickws:
They are all about winning. Nothing there surprises me. It’s all about YAY TEAM BEAT THE LIBS even if that approach means more harm on the country longterm.

@jinxtigr:
thanks for that..your bass line made me think of “four dead in ohio”
