I guess i am gonna be that guy.
Anne, if this group is in fact run and/or sponsored by the Chinese government, I don’t really care how pretty they can dance. There is nothing neutral or harmless about the state government in China. There is no “gray” area where you have to take the good with the bad.
These people, like most Chinese citizens, are victims in a corrupt brutal dictatorship.
I have no interest in pointing at pretty objects that disguise the true nature of regimes they are living in, sorry. This disgusts me. I know they don’t make policy, but groups like this help the Chinese politicians present a nice attractive tourist face over evil.
So this thing about the UK government passing a bill to TRIPLE college fees seem crazy. Of course it’s also crazy that the fees were that heavily subsidized to begin with. But to suddenly pass a law to triple it? Either the Tory government is extra brave or extra stupid.
@Ija:
Yesterday the Today Show did a segment on the UK tuition rioters and the Charles/Camilla car incident. I thought it was interesting that, although they only allowed a nanosecond for a student rioter opinion, the one line they did show one of the rioters saying was, “This is all the bankers faults and we have to pay the price!”
Yeah! Preach it, random UK student rioter! And kudos to NBC for allowing that kind of sentiment to be heard. There should be a lot more of it.
@Ija: Just don’t leave spaces between the item you want to quote. There’s a fancy way to do it, but I simply leave a row of …..................s.
The state of GA has a higher unemployment rate than the nation. The last 8 years the Republican leadership has lowered taxes for friends and raised fees on various services including hospital stays. Housing has collapsed and there are no signs of improvement. The populace rewarded the Republicans by voting out most democrats in the legislature. When you make changes over time, you are able to shift the blame.
That was very cool, though I really do prefer The Nutcracker. I can imagine the guys here thinking about how flexible the female lead is…
I see a lot of people (myself included, although I’ve been reading this blog for about 2 years) are fleeing the madness that is DKos to come here and avoid the flame/meta fests. Reminds me of the primaries…
Good point. I always thought the British royal family is independently wealthy, as in they have land and estates that are actually the properties of the family and don’t belong to the state. Yet they still cost the British taxpayers millions of dollars. Maybe in these times of austerity, they could sacrifice a little and spend some of their own money.
@Ija:
I don’t think the point of the riots was to do something to the royal family. The riots were against the tuition hikes and Charles and Camilla drove into the middle of it.
At least that’s what the press is claiming. As many people have observed, there are no photos of the “rioting mob” around the car, even though the press has a photo of Camilla looking terrified. You’d think a few faces would be visible if the car was surrounded. There is speculation that the whole thing was staged so as to make the rioters look bad. “See! They’ll even attack the royal family! They’re awful!”
That seems a bit conspiracy-theory-ist to me, but who knows. Stranger things have happened.
@Ija: The Civil List—as the public funding is called—has been frozen for some years now and is scheduled to be frozen for at least the next 9 years. It pays for the costs of official duties, staff and buildings. ETA: This includes money for some family members (a number of cousins) who do not get their own Civil List funding as Charles does.
Much of the private wealth comes from stocks, bonds and investments. There is also the estates in Lancaster, whose profits go into a land trust. Much of the other wealth from land and things like the Crown Jewels are owned by the country. A portion of this wealth is actually gray, as to who owns it.
Well, if you’re going to tamper with the classics, I prefer the Matthew Bourne version. Here’s a clip from the Royal Ball, with Adam Cooper as the Black Swan behaving badly.
Besides the wonderful eye candy for us females, this version is way better than the original for having actual structure in the first act, you know, a plot.
It took me a moment to figure out why they weren’t quite moving like traditional ballet dancers. Then I read the title again and felt stupid.

Wow. How many ballerinas can dance on the head of a pin?
December 11th, 2010 at 3:56 am
Very nicely choreographed and well performed. (And I kept waiting for the parallel bars to be brought on stage.)

This has neither Natalie Portman, nor Mila Kunis. I feel gypped.

What’s the big deal? Can’t everyone do that?

@Ija: State governments in the U.S. have passed laws allowing state colleges to jack up tuition on a regular basis.
They may not jump to triple tuition in one shot, but the tuition will be tripled in a few years.
I wonder why we don’t riot over things anymore…

Maybe that’s the reason. Over here, things are usually done over time, people don’t realize what is happening until it is too late.

Opps, wrong formatting. I don’t know how to put two sentences in the blockquote. gene108, I didn’t mean to steal your sentence! Sorry.
December 11th, 2010 at 8:22 am
@Ija:
First, say FYWP! Second, put two underscores in the space between the sentences, whilst continuing to say FYWP!
Throw in an All Hail Tunch! and you’ll be good to go. Also.

@Violet:
It seems a bit pointless doing that to Charles and Camilla. IT’s not like the royal family have any real power.

Wonder how many billions of dollars are used to prop up their useless regal lifestyle.

@Sko Hayes: Like you I’ve been around here for a while, but I officially said goodbye to the GOS until sanity returns there.

@PurpleGirl:
Frozen as in there is no year-to-year increase or frozen as in no money is being paid out?
December 11th, 2010 at 9:34 am
Anne Laurie, thanks for this! I just had to share it on the Book of Face.
December 11th, 2010 at 9:45 am
Jayzus! Are there any tendons in that woman’s hips not stretched to rubber bands?
There’s a whole lot of Pilates behind that performance, me thinks.
Awesome. Thanks, Anne Laurie.

@Ija: The article in The Independent didn’t say. I’d guess though that it means no increases, and maybe some reductions in the funding.

I’m torn. I love ballet, but I know the methods by which the Chinese practice. Plus, ballet in and of itself is pretty brutal.
@TomG: Was thinking this as well.
