Hey Now!

This was one of my favorite shows when it was on, so I’m glad to see the Larry Sanders Show will finally be available on DVD.

Rip Torn was genius.

    Wow, I loved that show and watched it too. I completely forgot about its existence until now. Thanks for the memories.

    “Hey Now” Hank and Artie were two of the greatest television characters ever…and the defining roles (for me) for both Torn and Jeffery Tambor.

    Loved Larry Sanders. Gotta say I loved the Gary Shandling Show, too.

    HBO put out the 1st season years ago, but it didn’t go anywhere from there (I’ve got Season 1 on my desk in front of me, in fact). It’s good to get a chance to watch the whole run again, since HBO never replays it. (although it will now that the DVD is coming out)

    It’s Hank Kings-LEEEEEEEEEEEE!

    I have found the David Cross IFC series “The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret” brilliant and funny. I don’t think I’ve laughed so hard at a TV show recently at the conclusion of Episode 5 of this 6 episode series. David Cross’ character by lying and knowing absolutely squat gets himself more and more and more into the shit as each episode goes by. I can only imagine what the next episode will bring.

    This is the theme to Garry’s show
    The theme to Garry’s show
    Garry called me up and asked if I could write his theme song
    I’m almost halfway finished
    How do you like it so far?
    How do you like the theme to Garry’s show?
    This is the theme to Garry’s show
    The opening theme to Garry’s show
    This is the music that you hear as you watch the credits
    We’re almost to the part
    Of where I start to whistle
    Then we’ll watch It’s Garry Shandling’s Show
    whistles
    This was the theme to Garry Shandling’s show

    And The Larry Sanders Show is brilliant. Garry Shandling is one of the greats.

    @Three-nineteen:
    Yes! The memories are coming back now. I loved that theme song.

    I have season 1 and have been waiting to get more, probably the best send up of TV ever. I had forgotten about The Gary Shandling Show – gonna have to look that one up too. Thanks!

    I don’t understand people who complain about holes in the plots of great TV shows, instead of focusing their criticisms on all the lousy TV shows out there.

    Shandling and Tambor together was great (Tambor and anyone, or no one, really. What a career.) But Fernwood 2 Night also. Jerry Hubbard, and Happy Kyne and the Mirthmakers. Martin Mull is more my kinda humor.

  13. MikeJ - October 31, 2010 | 11:42 am · Link

    @Guster: If there were only two tv shows, a good one with plot holes or one that was bad in every conceivable way, why on earth would you start an online petition to cancel the good show and replace it with the bad?

    It was an amazing show. And by the way, history has shown that Larry was right to be paranoid about Jon Stewart.

    @Cat Lady: Well, only 12 comments deep and already the top three sexiest men in the universe (my universe) have been highlighted:

    Garry Shandling
    Martin Mull
    Fred Willard

    If there is anything more attractive than that particular brand of sense of humor, I certainly don’t know what it could be. Uncle Andy on WEEDS needs a vigorous nod while I’m at it.

    Speaking of things that excite me: The Pets of Balloon Juice 2011 Calendar IS ON SALE NOW!
    Sales have been great considering that 80% of the people who have pets in there probably don’t even know it’s available yet.

    Go to this blog for better viewing of the cover and twelve months.

    I lurved that show; it really skewered so many TV tropes with such funny writing. For instance, the one where he says, “I’m so glad my black dot came back from the cleaners.”

    He’s got a really sly sense of humor, which not everyone appreciates. Isn’t he known as a “comedian’s comedian?” I tend to like that kind of humor, myself.

    Since it’s a more or less open thread, those interested can see my kitten, Tristan, discover his paw.

    Eight weeks old now, and feeding, cleaning, and toileting himself. Loads of fun, and still cute!

    @Laura W.:

    Agreed! Here’s an idea for a Halloween costume if you and a very very close friend still are wondering what to go as tonight, but don’t wet your pants laughing.

    @Cat Lady: If that costume does not just scream: John Cole and Just Some Fuckhead, I honestly do not know what would.

    @Laura W.:

    Whoa. That does Scream.

    In Canada it was on CBC on Friday nights, uncut.

    Now there’s a country that sets prudery aside for good TV.

    Jeremy Piven in an early TV role as one of the writers (the other writer was that creepy guy who’s now on CSI).

    Football OT- I’m watching NFL Today before SFvDen and the trick-or-treat sketch is brilliant, especially the Brett Favre cell phone costume.

    Yeah, first time I’d ever heard of him…or Sarah Silverman.

    @Cat Lady:

    That reminds me of the story about Robin Williams getting cut from a local comedy competition back in the day … the judge was Martin Mull.

    We Patriots fans can’t figure out what we want more – injured egomaniacal Favre or healthy Tavaris “Who?” Jackson. What are the Favre ass lickers in MN saying?

  29. Andy K - October 31, 2010 | 1:36 pm · Link

    @asiangrrlMN:

    I think someone forgets that there are teams other than the Stillers and the Stillers’ opponent of the week who also play.

  30. asiangrrlMN - October 31, 2010 | 1:39 pm · Link

    @Cat Lady: Aaaaargh! You said Favre! Ugh. My guess is he will start. Bastard. Honestly, I don’t think it matters at this point. The Vikes suck.

    @Andy K: I agree. I think someone doesn’t realize there are actual games occurring right the fuck now. (Go Jets. Sorry).

    ETA: Well, we could just take over this thread. It is tagged “Television”.
