Open Thread: Early in the Morning

Purists may grumble, but I still love Cyndi Lauper. Hey, at least y’all have to admit that she’s giving some of Tha Tru Bluesmen some much-needed dollars, right?

I guess we could migrate the conversation over this way. Seems only fair since you just threw this up while I was typing. Note to self: type faster.

Love Cindy Lauper. Loved her then, love her now. And I am a purist.
She’s one hipster lady THIS Daddy-O digs, and always will!
July 17th, 2010 at 2:31 am
@Daddy-O: Ditto this. I LOVE Cyndi Lauper. My niece did a video for her birthday with her and her friends dancing and lip-synching to Girls Just Wanna Have Fun. Except, it was this version because, my niece said, “The original girl can’t sing.” I said, “You do NOT dis Cyndi Lauper to me!” Kids today.
@Yutsano: Hi, hon. I’m stalking you!
July 17th, 2010 at 2:35 am
I like Girls Just Wanna Have Fun and All Through the Night. The latter brings back poignant Proustian memories of a long ago relationship that began in the sweet youthful days of autumn 1984.
Before the Gogol’s Bordello or Lady Gaga were even born, no doubt.
So it goes.
July 17th, 2010 at 2:39 am
One of my fave Cyndi songs. I Drove All Night. Great vid, too.
July 17th, 2010 at 2:42 am
Why would Cyndi Lauper offend “purists”?
Anyway, Time After Time is a sweet song.
[edit] Oh, after watching the video, I get it now. Heh.
July 17th, 2010 at 2:42 am
@eemom: What a lot of folks don’t appreciate or are even aware of is how hard Cyndi worked to get to that first record contract. She slaved and sweated out the New York music scene for YEARS before she finally scored a deal. So regardless of how you feel about her talent (and as a high schooler in the 80’s Cyndi was nothing short of goddess territory, especially if you had an antipathy for Madonna) you have to respect her willingness to work her ass off to get where she is today. Oh and she did a guest turn on Bones that was fucking brilliant.
Oh and my fave: Change of Heart. I think it’s the drums.
July 17th, 2010 at 2:43 am
Cyndi showing up as a surprise on a Japanese show. Look at how they FREAK out. (Song is Hey Now (Girls Just Wanna Have Fun)).
July 17th, 2010 at 2:50 am
Cyndi singing Prince’s When You Were Mine without changing the gender of the pronouns and nouns. That blew my mind back in the day.
July 17th, 2010 at 2:54 am
@asiangrrlMN: I had to giggle at that video, if for no other reason than to see how they transliterated Cyndi’s name into Japanese. They do have to get rather, umm, creative with it. To explain why I’d have to launch into a long diatribe about how Japanese characters work, and I’m just too damn tired.
July 17th, 2010 at 2:58 am
@Yutsano:
Was it the Griff Rhys Jones program? The cinematography is extraordinary. It made me fall in love with my town all over again.
Practice saying “fuck off fucker” in your head, even if you don’t say it out loud.
July 17th, 2010 at 3:06 am
@Tattoosydney: This specifically relates to cooking and restaurants, and I’m glad I watched it now because I wanted to drop a name on you and see if you were familiar with her: Lorraine Godsmack. She’s the executive pastry chef of a restaurant called Yellow in Pott’s Point, and apparently she also takes on apprentices. I was also just honestly curious if you’d ever eaten there. Now if y’all will excuse me I’m going to watch the video you suggested.
July 17th, 2010 at 3:11 am
@Tattoosydney: There you are! I was just saying I wasn’t my hubby’s keeper. How you be?
@Yutsano: Well, when you’re not as tired, perhaps.
July 17th, 2010 at 3:13 am
@Yutsano:
I haven’t eaten there, but I have had the date tart at Rockpool which she created, and which is quite deservedly famous and much imitated.
July 17th, 2010 at 3:21 am
@Tattoosydney: Just hit the break between #1 & #2. First of all everyone should see this because it’s amazingly well done just from the first ten minutes, and second I’m just stunned at the cinematography employed here. Gotta love British tax dollars at work!
July 17th, 2010 at 3:24 am
@asiangrrlMN:
I’m well. It’s fucking cold, but Bradley is back from Melbourne, we are off to a friend’s fiftieth birthday party, I went to the delicatessen and bought much food, and tomorrow there will be cooking! Life is good.
July 17th, 2010 at 3:30 am
@Tattoosydney: Incidentally I meant to ask: was this the same date tart you were trying to make the other day? Or am I thinking of a similar date-based confectionary?
July 17th, 2010 at 3:34 am
I saw “Inception tonight.” It’s amazing. If you like mindfuck movies, I recommend it unreservedly. I saw it with a friend who knows a bit about dream theory, and he says it uses the concepts correctly. The acting is terrific. The visuals are absolutely stunning – even I, totally jaded about CGI, was enthralled and want to know How did they do that?!
I want to see it again, that’s how good it is.
July 17th, 2010 at 3:39 am
@Yutsano:
No – tht recipe is a lot simpler – the one I was trying to make was one for Treacle Tart from the chef at Fat Duck, and was…. challenging, in parts.
July 17th, 2010 at 3:48 am
@Tattoosydney: I want a tart for a date!
@CaseyL: You are the second person to rave about this tonight here at BJ. Duly noted.
July 17th, 2010 at 3:50 am
@asiangrrlMN: Two tarts on a date? Is that legal in Minnesota? Someone should inform Michelle Bachmann immediately!
@Tattoosydney: I didn’t think I was remembering correctly. The date tart does look phenomenal though.
July 17th, 2010 at 3:53 am
Very nice video to start the morning, Anne Laurie. I’ve always liked Cyndi Lauper and the old bluesmen combo is just great, looks like they’re having fun. The purist streak in me didn’t even raise an eyebrow.
Also, thanks for promoting Kay’s comment on voting. I think this is a fundamentally important issue that needs some broader attention.
July 17th, 2010 at 4:35 am
Hey, maybe things like this can make a few more people in the USA think about taking away the multi-billion dollar narcotics market here which is tearing apart Mexico, by decriminalization / legalization, because more police and the army isn’t going to stop this sort of stuff.
July 17th, 2010 at 6:08 am
This is what it sounds like, when TeaTards cry…
...after Scott Brown voted for financial reform…
That “Fannie-Freddie-Barney Frank-ACORN-Jimmy Carter-CRA” thing has joined a long list of the new loony right’s black helicopters.
July 17th, 2010 at 6:30 am
@El Cid: Oh, such sweet, delicious tears…
July 17th, 2010 at 7:03 am
There are Cyndi Lauper “purists”? Wow. Who knew?
July 17th, 2010 at 7:14 am
Idiotic ‘Contract from America’ website displaying Carly Fiorina’s picture next to:
‘This candidate wants your support…
but does he share your mainstreat values?’ [Italics mine].
So either Carly’s short hair (health related – be nice) is confusing the baggers, or they just assume that candidates are male. In their defense, it’s too difficult to have two versions of the text, and only Goddess-worshipping hippies write things like ‘he or she’ or otherwise take pains to correctly identify people’s gender.
July 17th, 2010 at 7:17 am
Shoddy, politically slanted reporting about FinReg from the WSJ?
Imagine my surprise.

Loved Cyndi the first time I heard he fronting Blue Angel, her 60’s girl group meets rockabilly band circa 1980. If you’ve never heard the album, go to iTunes and buy it NOW. You won’t regret it.
July 17th, 2010 at 8:00 am
I still love Cyndi too. You might also like this picture. I loved it myself. The girl is still styling after all these years.
(Yeah, it’s a pathetic blogwhore but it does go straight to the brilliant photo)

Re: a couple posts below, R’s don’t want you to vote
When hasn’t this been a republican agenda. I’m remembering Paul Weyrich saying he didn’t want people to vote, the more people that vote the worse it is for R’s to get elected.
About 3 years ago I saw R pollster Kellyanne Conway (who predicted McCain would win, lol) on cspan talking about the future of the R party to college republicans. She said she is one the few people who will publicly say, “I hope more people don’t vote because….” and then she seemed to think better of expanding on that thought.
On Obama’s vacations: I thought the idiotic meme that Obama takes too much time off the job came mainly from Fox, Drudge, etc. I had no idea that the Republican National Committee has actually set up a website devoted to Obama’s leisure time, this from the “mature” party that said not a word about Bush (Now watch this drive) taking 2.7 years of vacation during his 8 years.

@CaseyL:
You’re not the only one tempted to do so! I feel like i missed something along the way, there was so much thrown at me. It’s really one of the best thriller/action/scifi movies to show up as of late. I don’t say that lightly either, especially as a long time fan of Ghost in the Shell (which is damned hard to beat).
July 17th, 2010 at 8:27 am
@CaseyL: I am seeing it today.
I haven’t read any reviews and know almost nothing about the movie itself. It takes a lot to get me into a theater these days, but for Nolan I’ll go on faith alone.
July 17th, 2010 at 8:45 am
@asiangrrlMN:
Great song, worst outfit ever.
July 17th, 2010 at 8:45 am
loves me some cyndi lauper. always have, always will.
cyndi as hockey mom … lol:
HOCKEY MOM, HOCKEY WIFE If the Rangers game’s in town, we go to see the Rangers. I’m actually allergic to the cold, but my son plays it, and my husband and son love it. I’m starting to understand what the towels are for. I was wondering why they were giving out bath mats at the game. It’s to wave. I knew I wasn’t going to be sweating. Anyway, I’m learning a lot about the sport. My son plays travel hockey. There’s a spring team. A summer team. Just when you think it’s over, it’s not.

Loved Cyndi Lauper since first seeing her barefoot on the Tonight Show w/ Carson so many years ago.
Amazing talent, amazing heart …
July 17th, 2010 at 9:04 am
What’s not to love about Cyndi?
@El Cid: This made me happy.
Now I must have coffee before commenting anywhere else. Friends do not let friends comment at BJ before coffee.

Am at the vet. Two of the cats ganged up on Chloe. One of them was the 20 year old. Chloe is ok, just back to being afraid of the little bastards. Max, however, is moving like he’s in pain, so he’s getting checked out.
This alll happened when we were out so we have no idea who started it. Chloe is submissive to them, so I doubt it was her. But if she was cornered, I imagine she’d feel she had no choice but to lash out.
Little brats, the lot of them.

If you’re interested, you can stream the US-Canada game from the world lacrosse championships (2:30 p.m. EDT) here. Costs a couple of pounds.

Speaking of 80s… Did someone say Early In the Morning?
Love me some Gap Band, especially in white satin with fringe and cowboy hats. Funk it up!
July 17th, 2010 at 11:14 am
Lauper’s “She Bop” is one of those songs that demand to be cranked to 11. And this thing here, with Toussaint? Hell yeah….
July 17th, 2010 at 11:33 am
Cyndi Lauper sings her ass off anytime she’s in front of a mike.
Miley Cyrus would be working at the Waffle House if Billy wasn’t her old man.
Somebody needs to hook Toussaint up with a genius grant, or maybe give him his own room at the Smithsonian. The man is a national treasure.
That band kicks @ss. Won’t bow, don’t know how.
July 17th, 2010 at 12:10 pm
@russell:
More likely she’d be joining a sorority at Vandy, like so many other spoiled brats from the suburbs of Nashville.
July 17th, 2010 at 1:31 pm
She’s a class act. I enjoyed the vid.
July 17th, 2010 at 2:47 pm
Love her. The lady has always done what she wants, spoken her mind and stood up for the little guy. I’m sorry, THAT’s punk.
