Late Night Open Thread

By Anne Laurie June 19th, 2010

I’d claim this one was for the Torchwood / Dr. Who fans, but actually I just forgot to run it last weekend for Lily’s Adoption Day.

Gardening plans for the weekend have been disrupted, because the Spousal Unit and I have tickets to see the BBC’s “Walking with Dinosaurs” arena show in Worcester tomorrow.

    This was actually in my area about a year ago. I unfortunately didn’t get to see it, but one of my co-workers took his three kids and his oldest (who is a dinosaur nut) raved about it for months afterwards. So just on that review alone it’s a worthy sight.

    Future apologies from congressman Joe Barton:

    1) Rep. Joe Barton (R-Big Oil) apologizes to the South for the Union winning the Civil War and for the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1965. “I think it is a tragedy of the first proportion that the government can tell a private corporation they cannot refuse service to minorities. I do not want to live in a country like that!”

    2) Rep. Joe Barton (R-Corporate Crooks) has now apologized to the family of deceased Enron CEO Ken Lay. “I think it is a tragedy of the first proportion that the government can hound a good, honest businessman to his death. I do not want to live in a country like that!”

    3) Rep. Joe Barton apologizes as well to former Sen. Larry Craig (R-In The Closet): “I think it is a tragedy of the first proportion that this fine upholder of conservative values is hounded out of government by the liberal media, simply because of how he uses the restroom. I do not want to live in a country like that!”

    Ohhhh, John Barrowman! How do I love thee?

    When I saw the song title, it sounded vaguely familiar, but when I clicked “Play,” I saw it was from Hello Dolly!

    I was in my high school production, and it was my first foray into singing tenor. I continue to do so in my church choir, but Barrowman, of course, kicks my ass.

    I first saw him in DeLovely, the Cole Porter biopic. His character was having trouble singing “Night and Day.” On the commentary, Kevin Kline, who — don’t laugh — is a Tony-Award-winning musical comedy actor, sang Barrowman’s praises.

    Their scene was a complicated dolly shot, and it took many retakes. Barrowman’s voice remained awesome throughout.

    One of my favorite songs and he is so easy on the eyes…

    (I feel a bit like an idjet since I had no idea Captain Jack could sing like that>)

    For some reason this makes me think of this—Matt Alber, “End of the World.”

  6. 6 Yutsano Says:

    @Steeplejack: ONE! TWO! THREE! FOUR! I DECLARE A TENOR WAR!!

    :)

    P.S. I linked to Matt earlier on. I think he’s infectious.

    The Walking with Dinosaurs show is incredible. It’s likely as close as we’ll ever get to seeing live, full-sized dinosaurs. The Brachiosaurs are ridiculously massive.

  8. 8 hamletta Says:

    @Steeplejack: Aw, that made me verklempt. Beautiful song, beautiful singer, beautiful voice.

    @Yutsano:

    Sorry. Got sidetracked by the mention of “shake” songs on another thread and went down a Floyd hole looking up ancient ‘60s music videos. Just got back after dredging up Love’s “Seven and Seven Is . . .”

    Now where were we? Oh, never mind.

  10. 10 Steeplejack Says:

    @hamletta:

    Glad you liked it. Hit me the same.

    @Yutsano: Tenor War?

    Ha. My darling Nathan is off doing summer stock, so it’s just me, but The Perv made it a point to insist on being “first chair,” since he’s leaving us forever. Thanks be to God!

    I didn’t care. Whatever you want, dude, just please tell me we won’t see you again.

    Captain Jack always makes me swoon.

  13. 13 Cheryl from Maryland Says:

    Wow. Michael Crawford sucks ass compared to Captain Jack.

  14. 14 SONDRA Says:

    I agree with everyone else; I love Captain Jack. I should have known that he would sing beautifully since he does everything else so well.
