Djork asked for a SC Governor’s race thread, just in time for this:
With a bead of sweat rolling down the side of his face outside a Columbia bar, Republican S.C. Sen. Jake Knotts called Lexington Rep. Nikki Haley, an Indian-American Republican woman running for governor, a “raghead” several times while explaining how he believed she was hiding her true religion from voters.
“She’s a fucking raghead,” Knotts said.
He later clarified his statement. He did not mean to use the F-word.
Another accusation: her father, a Sikh, walks around Lexington wearing a turban:
“We’re at war over there,” Knotts said.
Asked to clarify, he said he did not mean the United States was at war with India, but was at war with “foreign countries.”

I saw this earlier, I think his full quote was that there was already a raghead in the whitehouse and that they didn’t need another raghead in the governor’s mansion.

I have some sympathy with Ms. Haley. Still it seems to me there is a lesson here–this is what the party she chose to join is like. Why should people who would as soon lie and slander as breathe,, for example, one of her supporters, the divine Ms. Palin, draw the line so as to exclude her?
If the alleged paramours coming forward are lying, it’s an absolute disgrace, and not much less of one if they aren’t. I seem to recall the expression ‘the cad’s cad’ being used when one of Princess Di’s bits on the side went public. Time to revive it I think.
Scott
and this lady is a republican why?
Probably ’cause she thinks that’s the only way to get elected in the Deep South.
I kinda doubt she’ll be a Republican much longer, though. Nothing like knowing your party has declared you an Enemy of the State to make you reconsider your affiliations…

“Over there” must also be that place that explains how Brewer’s dad could simultaneously die “fighting the Nazi regime in Germany” and die of lung disease in CA in 1955 after working as a civilian supervisor for a naval munitions depot in Hawthorne, NV. That is one interesting mental map they’ve got going there. Everyone knows how geographic projections work? Skipping a lot of steps, basically it’s how to get representations of places on the round thing onto a flat piece of paper. Well, these people’s piece of paper is apparently amazingly perhaps even Escher-worthily, crumpled. No wonder they treat the rest of the world like garbage.

Nah. She won’t bolt. For one thing, it’d be hard as hell to win statewide in South Carolina as a Democrat; it’d be impossible to won as a “raghead” Democrat. Besides, I think there’s something badly wrong with people like Haley and Michael Steele and J.C. Watts. I mean, there has to be something wrong with any minority who joins the Republican Party, knowing what most of them think about “those people”, ragheads and darkies and all those inferior types. They know all that, and they’re still willing to belong to the party–even run for office as a member of that party. Healthy people wouldn’t do that.
And just as an aside, how is it that so many of the worst bigots are just about the worst exemplars of white people? They’re always fat, ignorant fucks, usually with egregious combovers. My husband’s family is Sikh, so my eyes have been opened up to a lot of ignorance toward the men who choose to wear turbans. (Some also carry the symbolic sword, which is really fun for plane rides, I’m sure.) What’s funny (not ha-ha) about Sikhs being mistaken for Muslim terrorists is that a lot of Sikhs are extremely prejudiced or distrustful of Muslims, mostly having to do with India’s and Pakistan’s terrible history. We have relatives who went through the Partition. There are some horrible stories about atrocities on both sides.

There is so much ignorance to Jake Knott’s “Christianity uber alles” nativism. Sikhs are not Muslims and, as your post should make clear, are not remotely anybody we are warring against.
There are further ironies here. The US is supposedly the bestest country that ever was, and here this fool is itchy for pure Christians-only government. India, the world’s largest democracy, tries to live up to a higher standard by electing a Sikh to be president of a majority Hindu country.

RE: Ash, your comment here is not much better than Knott’s. What does ethnicity or “minority” status have to do with anything?
And how is that? This is the United States. People change their names all the time, and it’s not just to run away from their heritage.
Your claims about your background make a comment like “… don’t really think of themselves as a minority anymore. They’re white in their heads” even more curious.
How is a “minority” supposed to think about himself or herself? You may not intend it, but you appear to be veering close to an “Indians can’t be real Americans” sentiment.
Wile E. Quixote
So let me see if I have this straight. The Republican gubernatorial primary in South Carolina is a contest between a closet queer and a psycho-hosebeast slut. I think that Haley should strike back at Bauer by saying “Look, we don’t need a faggot in the governor’s office, we already have one serving as one of our senators.” and then say that she was only joking, but only after Bauer and Graham have to make lots of indignant denials.

Sikhism was founded as a way to defend India against Muslim holocausts perpetrated against Hindus for 300 years by Islamic Mughal Terrrorism.
About 50 million Hindus were slaughered in the most obsene and callous of ways (since they were “unbelievers” as per the Jihadis).
I am not exagerrating. Sikhs are still a disproportionate part of Indian army/navy and they do *not* like Muslims at all (they are called The Muslim Killers).

About 600 million or so North Indians are Indo-European people who call themselves Aryan (a Hindi word), speak a Indo-European language and follow a core Indo-European religion, the same religion as Norse as a matter of fact. [The holiest Hindu (v)Edda is the pretty much the same book as the Norse Edda]. Their holiest symbol is the Swastika, the holiest syllable is Om and all married women and priests wear various Shubtikas and Laltikas on their foreheads.
So I’ve always wondered why a few Hindus would regress to adopting a foreign middle-eastern Semitic religion when in the USA. Why adopt Christianity, when it has no historical significance to you, if you are Hindu.
Weird.

@Xenos:
Isn’t that the whole of protestantism/predestinationists? Southern Methodism as I’ve seen isn’t that terrible. Or, at least wasn’t in South Florida where I grew up. The church was pretty liberal, peace-loving, and with an emphasis on personal betterment. I’m an atheist now, and I certainly would have held on to more resentment if I ever heard fire & brimstone coming from the preachers. My only real complaints had more to do with the jock-y dudes and tone to the youth program, but balancing that out (much later) was a large dissent over the War in Iraq.

Now, you’ve all seen the type of national representatives we elect in SC (not I, trust me), the Stroms, the Lindseys, the DeMenthes…close your eyes and think about those in the second tier, of state representatives and the back benchers behind them.
Say hello to Jake Knotts. Fully representative of the quality of state-wide official here in SC. Smiling faces, beautiful places…if you’re a porcine, sweaty white male with zero sense of shame.

Because conversion and born-againnery feels good, man.
Why do Mormons see conversion successes in Latin America, if they’re not really mentioned by Smith?

“Aryan” is not really an accurate ethnic description, nor are Indian peoples a monolithic ethnic group (hell, not even the Japanese are monolithically “East Asian,” as some would like to believe)
@foo1:
It’s much more complicated than this. For example, Lieutenant General Jagjit Singh Arora was the commander of the Indian army in the Eastern front in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 which led to the creation of Bangladesh. This is how the Muslim Bangladeshis remembered him:
A further irony is that the US backed Pakistan in this war. Go figure.

No, no, she’s a Republican now. As long as she can be of some use to them, I think the American thing would be to let her go on being a token. Her father, of course, well, all those things you listed are too good for a Muslim terrorist like him…

That’s one tree short of calling her a “coconut”.

Roger that. I remember when I went to borrow notes for a biology class from my Indian friend who lived across the street and was treated to a speech of that nature. This was about a year and a half after 9/11. His parents are very traditional and kind of dorky, and while they would yell in the sense of raising their voices every so often, they would never do it in the company of anyone who wasn’t a family member. They were very nice and calm the vast majority of the time, but somehow Muslims came up, and they basically told me how they were the scum of the earth.

@maus: She probably converted when she married Mr. Haley.

Late to the party here, but Mrs. Haley is quite light skinned, for an Indian (Sikh or Hindu or Moslem or Jain, etc.). I wonder if low info voters haven’t put it together that the ‘Haley’ who is a damned furriner is THAT Haley.
I think that’s what the fat asshole was trying to get out: She looks white, but really she’s a furriner!!
