You can’t say yes and you can’t say no

By DougJ, Head of Infidelity May 18th, 2010

I never thought I would recommend a Larry King interview with a geriatric rocker, but I highly recommend tuning into the Larry King interview with Mick Jagger tonight—there’s 15 minutes left in EST but it probably hasn’t started yet elsewhere. Great live footage! And is it a coincidence that the NBA is using “Rip This Joint” as as its theme song? Thanks to the commenters for directing me to the “Plundered My Soul” YouTube. Also too.

Trying to keep the Exile on Main Street re-release posts to a mininum here, but yeah, I’m excited.

  1. 1 Lev Says:

    Yeah, the Stones were at their best in the early 70s, when Mick Taylor was with the group. Exile and Sticky Fingers were the best things they ever did, IMHO.

  2. 2 DougJ Says:

    @Lev:

    The best things anyone ever did.

  3. 3 Mike Kay Says:

    it’s unusual for him to do interviews. I’m wondering if they’re having trouble selling tickets.

  4. 4 MoeLarryAndJesus Says:

    Exile is one of the most overrated albums of all time.

    Beggar’s Banquet and Aftermath and Sticky Fingers kick Exile all over the parking lot.

  5. 5 arguingwithsignposts Says:

    @DougJ: Bob Dylan would like a word with you.

  6. 6 mobtown999 Says:

    OK - just a couple of nights ago i found myself blasting “Happy” through my stereo repeatedly until I told myself that my neighbors are about to hate me or call the cops…how many “rewinds” are too many: 2, 4, 8, 16…just put on the headphones already you freak!!??

    Also, best Keith song ever or best Stones song ever?...discuss

  7. 7 Cat Lady Says:

    I have always preferred the Beatles.

  8. 8 Mako Says:

    Heh. You all sound old.

  9. 9 Mako Says:

    Strats are THE best guitars.

  10. 10 Thadeus Horne Says:

    @Mako: Maybe…but the boys could rock.

  11. 11 mvr Says:

    I was enough of a sucker to pay for the rerelease (how many times have I bought this album?) in vinyl and more. So I had it yesterday from Amazon. Not sad I got it, even at the price, but I suspect I’m among the pretty hard core here. There’s a video still to watch and a nice picture book along with some nicely pressed pristine vinyl to replace the original I foolishly sold at the used record emporium 20 some years back.

    The original disk holds up in remastered form, and several of the new tracks are good or interesting. A bit of the remaster reveals stuff not there on the original, and that may even be worth it for those like myself, but it is not necessarily better. By this I mean, when you’ve played an album to death (as I have this one) a bit of variation is interesting and allows you to continue to enjoy it despite repeated plays. But the interest of the extra details don’t mean they should have been there in the original.

    FWIW.

  12. 12 Calvin Jones and the 13th Apostle Says:

    Don’t forget, the present issue of Rolling Stone is all over the Exile re-release.

  13. 13 TR Says:

    OT, but they’re calling it for Sestak and things are looking good in PA-12.

  14. 14 Mako Says:

    Oates was always my favourite Hall&Oat. He reminds me of Harpo Marx.

  15. 15 mvr Says:

    @Mako:
    Strats are a work of genius, and the epitome of one form of guitar evolution. But along other dimensions, National Duolians are cool and teles aren’t bad either. And that ignores lots of other neat stuff.

  16. 16 Elvis Elvisberg Says:

    Elvis Costello covered this song with the Sugarcanes when I saw them a few weeks ago.

    More Exile covers here.

  17. 17 John O Says:

    A great band at the peak of their powers. No need to quibble.

    Like The Who at Leeds, Zappa at the Fillmore in ‘71, Zeppelin circa ‘72 or so, etc., etc…

    I’ve never seen the Stones, because since I’ve had a chance, ‘85 or so, I’ve always told myself they were over the hill. LOL.

  18. 18 Mako Says:

    @mvr:
    heh. You sound ebert.

  19. 19 arguingwithsignposts Says:

    @mvr: shout out for the Les Paul. Although Teles beat Strats in my book.

  20. 20 Zuzu's Petals Says:

    I saw the Stones once, at Altamont. What can I say.

  21. 21 Mako Says:

    @mvr:
    I think , overall, that Windows computers are probably best for the casual computer user.

  22. 22 Redshift Says:

    @Mako: Nothing like a music thread to reveal the ages of all these pseudonyms you’ve been chatting with, eh? I had a similar experience a few years ago on another blog that shall remain nameless.

  23. 23 steve Says:

    What happened to the real DougJ? Then one who would have tagged this ‘good news for conservtives’ for no reason whatsoever.

  24. 24 John O Says:

    Green Day in 2000! Lady Gaga in ‘08!

    Guess my age.

  27. 27 Mako Says:

    You know, surprisingly, Fiat is a better automobile than a Chevy.

  28. 28 Comrade Luke Says:

    I can’t help associating Sestak with Land of the Lost. I do it every time.

  29. 29 Mako Says:

    Just wondering if anyone here knows of a good veal recipe? Got the granduncles and aunts or some shit coming over next week and i need something fancy to feed them. And I got this dead calf…

  30. 30 SiubhanDuinne Says:

    @Mike Kay #3:

    It’s unusual for him to do interviews.

    What are you talking about? Larry King does interviews every night.

    Oh.

  31. 31 PanAmerican Says:

    Go to hell you old bastards.

    I just hope Jann Wenner lives long enough to see that shitty rag go belly up.

  32. 32 SixStringSlingr Says:

    @Mako: I love Strats but that’s a Telecaster that Keef is wielding like a club. He mostly plays Teles.
    But tell us again how old we are??

  33. 33 Mako Says:

    Really, I got nothing against homosexuals, i just don’t want them owning guns.

  34. 34 Stroszek Says:

    CNN is in stellar corporatist form tonight.

    I just wasted five minutes of my life listening to John King and Dana Bash discuss how Sestak won by tapping into Tea Party sentiment.

  35. 35 gbear Says:

    I thought about getting the new version but from what I’ve heard, the bonus CD is some leftover stuff that has Jagger dubbing vocals over the top. To me, a 60-something Jagger singing along to a 20-something Richards is more than a bit phony. I’ll keep listening to my old vinyl version (still has the postcards that came with it).

    Exile is the very last classic album by the Stones, but I’d rather listen to Brian Jones era stuff.

    Who would you rather be: A Beatle or a Rolling Stone?

  36. 36 Yutsano Says:

    OT, but eerily addictive:

    Latin can blow me, plebeian indeed, just spell it in englsih.

  39. 39 Mako Says:

    Humans should not have pets, it as a form of cross-species slavery.

  40. 40 The Moar You Know Says:

    You fogies are full of crap. The Steinberger (original L series, thank you) is the finest instrument ever made. By anyone.

  41. 41 Mako Says:

    You know what I hate? Fat people and babies on an airplane. Just the other day I had this fat broad oozing armflesh over the armrest and her apparently inbred infant puking into my SkyMall mag…

  42. 42 gbear Says:

    I still like my 70’s Slingerlands.

  43. 43 Mako Says:

    Rainbows are overrated.

  44. 44 handy Says:

    @mvr:

    The meta is strong with this one.

  45. 45 mr. whipple Says:

    Niiiice! Among the dumbest things I ever did, selling my Radio King snare.

  46. 46 sherifffruitfly Says:

    Sympathy for the Devil, Gimme Shelter, Paint it Black.

    Fuck I love the Stones.

  47. 47 gbear Says:

    @Mako: Well. that is the most useful use for a Skymail mag. Did you fold it up and put it back in the seat pocket?

  48. 48 Mako Says:

    Sir, just because you bought the cheapest piece-of-crap low-flush toilet and it doesn’t work, doesn’t mean low-flush toilets don’t work.

  49. 49 arguingwithsignposts Says:

    @The Moar You Know: The Stradivarius would like a word with you.

  50. 50 Mako Says:

  51. 51 gbear Says:

    @mr. whipple: Oops. I have to confess that my snare is a Ludwig Supersensitive (which I recently found out is the snare that Jody Stevens used on the Big Star albums). I might as well also confess that I updated with Pearl hardware and first-generation Rims (prototype actually: the guy who designed Rims lived in the Twin Cities).

  52. 52 Brian J Says:

    I just got home now, and I haven’t been following this race closely, so does Critz, the Democrat, beating Burns, the Republican, for the House seat in John Murtha’s old district mean that the Democrats aren’t completely screwed in November, or was it expected that they would keep it?

  53. 53 MikeJ Says:

    I’ve been listening to P*ssy Galore’s[1] cover album of Exile for the past two days. Jon Spencer et al rock. It was only released as a cassette after Ian MacKaye drove them out of DC, but it is so, so good.

    [1]Note that I hate when people bleep words in blog comments, but that word is in WP’s spam words list. FYWP and FTFY.

  54. 54 jeffreyw Says:

    I’m seeing spec that Elliot Spitzer is taking the CNN slot Campbell Brown is leaving.

  55. 55 mai naem Says:

    Part of me feels bad for Specter but then I think about his cross examination of Anita Hill and I say too bad so sad. I figure Obamaman will find him a nice little high prestige job on some panel or whatevah.

  56. 56 SixStringSlingr Says:

    @Brian J: Since that district voted for Kerry in ‘04 and then McCain in ‘08 plus (if I remember right) the Repubs have a registration advantage, it was expected to go back to the R’s. Since it didn’t, thus putting a hole in the Dems-are-gonna-get-slaughtered-in-November theory, expect there to be little-to-no attention paid by our corporate media overlords.

  57. 57 Mako Says:

    Whether it is a strat or or a tele doesn’t really matter, Fender made the best guitars. Let’s face it Les Paul was a piker compared to Leo. Leo was like Jimmy Cagney and Les was like the Monkees.

  58. 58 Mako Says:

    @gbear:
    What are you an idiot? I just made that shit up. Thought this was a troll thread.

  59. 59 MikeJ Says:

    @Mako: Yes, if you like twang instead of FWAAAAAAAR, fender is better.

    I play a tele myself. But I always wanted a Rickenbacker.

  60. 60 arguingwithsignposts Says:

    @Mako: posting in a troll thread? okay.

  61. 61 mr. whipple Says:

    @gbear:

    I got rid of the RK when I bought a complete Pearl set in the early 70’s. The Pearl came with a metal snare that had a nice pop, and at the time I thought its sound was more with what I wanted at the time…ie, I stood some chance of sounding like Bill Bruford, but no chance of sounding like Buddy Rich. I am an idiot.

    We used the Supersensitives in orchestra. Nice drum.

  62. 62 Mako Says:

    In all seriousness, i know i been goofing around here tonite, please forgive me, I’m a bit tore up because my cat … just had to be put down.
    He’s been with me for i forget how long, probably 10 years, had him since he was a kitten, traveled with me all around the world, just got too damn old. He went out with dignity tho, he knew it was time, I held his arm when the vet gave him the shot, i watched the light go out in his eyes. He knew I was there for him.

    I hate dogs.

  63. 63 Brian J Says:

    @SixStringSlingr:

    In other words, now all we need to do is have Obama fire Rahm Emmanuel, and the Democrats might, just might, keep the House in November?

  64. 64 gbear Says:

    @Mako: So fuck you troll. that more to your liking?

  65. 65 arguingwithsignposts Says:

    @Mako: sorry to hear that. really. peace to you.

  66. 66 Mako Says:

    We called him “Chinaman” cuz he was yellow. Man, I miss that cat.

  67. 67 SGEW Says:

    Time to update the “spectering” definition in the lexicon, methinks.

  68. 68 mvr Says:

    @Mako:
    Sorry about that. Really. People wind up really fond of cats partly because cats can mostly take or leave people and somehow that is a good reason to like cats. Again, FWIW.

  69. 69 Mako Says:

    I decided to go with the veal tartare. Thanks to all who sent recipes.

  70. 70 SixStringSlingr Says:

    @Mako: Sorry to hear that. Had to do the same with my 19-year-old kitty last October. It’s never easy but the hurt just shows how much they mean to us. I’m truly sorry for your loss.

  71. 71 SixStringSlingr Says:

    @Brian J: Oh, no, no, no the Dems are SCREWED! Don’t you watch the tv, man??

    ETA: Fuckin’ WP ate my exclamation points.

  72. 72 hamletta Says:

    Mako, I’m so sorry.

  73. 73 Anya Says:

    @TR: has any pundit declared sestak’s win as a loss for Obama, yet?

    Times like these I regret not having a t.v.

  74. 74 handy Says:

    @Anya: I’m sure they’re just rehearsing the script right and proper. Don’t worry, it’ll come.

  84. 84 arguingwithsignposts Says:

    @Mako: but then we wouldn’t be trollin’, would we?

    but your cat speaks highly of you.

  85. 85 mai naem Says:

    @Mako: Sorry about the cat. The summer’s coming up and that’s the busiest time for kill-shelters. Its the perfect time to go out and get another cat. I don’t mean to sound flip but for myself I felt much better after my dogs better to go out and get another dog almost right away because it gets you busy with another animal and less time getting depressed about the pet you just los.

  86. 86 Anya Says:

    From the replies to my question it seems that, in the eyes of the villagers, Barack Obama is a perpetual loser and everything that happens is an indication of the electorate rejecting him.

  87. 87 Corner Stone Says:

    @Mako: You’ve never had a cat. In any sense of the word.

    I can’t help thinking it would have been better for Chinaman if I’d put him down myself with my Ruger.

  92. 92 Corner Stone Says:

    @Mako: You’re a sick twist my friend.

  93. 93 Mako Says:

    @Corner Stone:
    Yeah, that kinda was carrying it a bit too far wasn’t it? Surprised the “chinaman” thing didn’t get a rise, usually does on liberal expat type places. And I thought surely i could get a good veal recipe, but no, everyone just wants to argue about guitars. And a goofy story about dead cats is a shoe in.

  94. 94 arguingwithsignposts Says:

    @Mako:

    but no, everyone just wants to argue about guitars.

    Goddamn it, there are some things that are important!

  95. 95 magurakurin Says:

    @mako

    Babies on airplanes need to pay for a ticket and have their own seat with a child seat strapped into it. Why does everyone else on the plane have to subsidized a baby’s free ride? Why doesn’t a baby need to have a seat belt? Why is okay that a baby can become a red stain on the ceiling if the plane hits serious turbulence? Airline ticket pricing is already unfair and frustrating enough without the added irritation of having to pay for the screaming baby riding for free on their mother’s lap in the next aisle. Everybody in their own seat.

  96. 96 Mako Says:

    @arguingwithsignposts:
    I’d just like to say that i have been reading and enjoying this blog for several years and i think Juan Cole’s informative interpretation of mid-east news is invaluable.

  97. 97 robertdsc Says:

    I can’t get into the Stones. Metallica is more my speed.

  98. 98 arguingwithsignposts Says:

    So true. When you’re in Houston, go to Centerfolds, not Treasures, or Ricks, or Colorado Grill.
    Tell ‘em John Cole sent you. They’ll know.

  102. 102 Mako Says:

  109. 109 arguingwithsignposts Says:

    @Corner Stone: i refuse to believe JC has that kind of pull in H-town.

  110. 110 Corner Stone Says:

    @arguingwithsignposts: It’s not pull, it’s that they know “JC” is a cheap motherfucker who really doesn’t care about their college tuition or their grandma in the hospital, or their kid at home.
    “JC” needs what he needs or he’s moving on.

  111. 111 Corner Stone Says:

    @DougJ: You are awesomely hilarious DougJ.

  112. 112 CalD Says:

I’ve been off that crack for almost two years now and there’s simply no question in my mind that I’m a better, saner person for it. I’m not about to be lured back in even by a Mick Jagger interview.

  113. 113 arguingwithsignposts Says:

    @Corner Stone: if i’m ever in h-town i’ll keep that in mind.

  114. 114 Yutsano Says:

  116. 116 Mako Says:

    @DougJ:
    Thanks dude. I’m kinda all choked up right now, never realized how many online friends i had… look I’m wondering if you guys could throw a few bucks my way for a decent funeral for Chinaman? Right now he’s in a box, don’t get me wrong, nothing disrespectful, its a nice box, a heavy duty Nike shoe box and there’s plenty of lime in there, i just want to send him out with honours, you know? So I need a few bucks for gas to drive down to NC to buy fireworks. If its okay I’l just give you my Paypa

    OK. What the fuck has been going on in the world of politics? In twenty words or less, give me the scoop on the last week or so. GO!

    P.S. Mako, sorry to hear about your cat. It’s hard to lose a loved one.

    P.P.S. I hate the Stones. How about a Tunchie pic? And yes, I saw Tunch in the fetish gear, poor baby.

  128. 128 Yutsano Says:

    @asiangrrlMN: Read your e-mail woman. I sent you a decent summary even if it’s a bit tl;dr for you. Oh and my needy orange beast says hi while he tries to knock my hand off my keyboard demanding attention.

  129. 129 BethanyAnne Says:

    @asiangrrlMN: The Stones are great as long as you’ve got the right occasion for them. Say, going from the 2nd floor to the 24th. Perfectly suited to that.

  130. 130 asiangrrlMN Says:

    @Yutsano: Saw it. I want more details.

    @BethanyAnne: Doing WHAT in an elevator?

  131. 131 Yutsano Says:

    @asiangrrlMN: To mix rocker metaphors, all I could think was Steven Tyler. Think about it, it’ll come to you.

  132. 132 asiangrrlMN Says:

    @Yutsano: Well, that was what I was thinking, but that’s not the Stones! And, yeah, it did…come to me.

    @BethanyAnne: Ah! That makes sense. My mind went elsewhere, naturally.

  133. 133 BethanyAnne Says:

    Just trying to avoid eye contact and humming along to the Stones, usually ;-)

  134. 134 Yutsano Says:

    @BethanyAnne: I actually enjoy making eye contact in elevators. Watching a human get self-conscious for no reason is a very satisfying exercise. Or that could just be the sadistic Scorpio in me.

    @asiangrrlMN: For some bizarre reason all I can think about now is his daughter. Oh and did you see the little sexual harassment up above? I can haz betr trollz plz?

  135. 135 Mako Says:

    @asiangrrlMN:
    Thanks, it was really sad. He had these abscesses, they just kept growing, and they were right there next to his eyes and there was puss, it was awful, you just couldn’t look at him anymore, it was like those pictures of hairlip kids they put all over the place to get you to donate some money, you know what i mean, and how many hairlip kids are there really? So we had to put him down. RIP Chinaman.

  136. 136 BethanyAnne Says:

    @Yutsano: Yea, I remember the experiment where a psychologist put folk in an elevator facing the back, just to see what other people did when they entered.

    We chat on the web with the trolls we have, not the trolls we wish we had :)

  137. 137 asiangrrlMN Says:

    @Mako: You were with him in the end, and he knew you loved him. That’s all anyone can ask, really.

    @Yutsano: Oh, you love it, and you know it. Liv Tyler is hot.

    @BethanyAnne: I had to do a similar experiment in psych class in college. It was weird.

  138. 138 Yutsano Says:

    @BethanyAnne: Absolutely technically, experiments where the subjects aren’t willing participants are unethical according to established human subjects standards. And getting them to agree after doesn’t cover your ass should they decide to sue you. In this case it would ruin the effect, but their ethics folks should have been questioning them up one side and down the other for non-disclosure of an experiment. I used to do research for a university, they were VERY serious about this shit. Or maybe I’m not totally understanding how the experiment was conducted.

    Oh and WOOT on the job front! Sounds about as grueling as my attempt to get on with the Feds will be.

    @asiangrrlMN: Me loving it or not is not the point. I feel as harassed as poor Tunchie on the vet table now. Liv Tyler has that damn ethereal quality to her, it’s annoying and gawjuss at the same time.

    BTW all election results tonight were good news for Grandpa McCain. Suddenly I can’t wait for his primary.

    I’ve been reading Jonathan Haidt recently. His TED talk got me curious enough to take the tests at http://yourmorals.org/ Sorta interesting stuff.

    I’m in a good mood today. Finally got a start date from the new company – I get to go to work on the 24th. My first interview for this position was in November of last year. It’s been a bizarre process. This last 2 weeks of them verifying my background, references, and drug-free-ness has had my nerves on edge.

  140. 140 asiangrrlMN Says:

    @Yutsano: That picture of Tunch was soooo sad. Sniff sniff.

    I hope Grumpy McCain goes down in flames. Asshat. When is his primary?

    @BethanyAnne: I am glad that the job is about to start. Let us know how it goes! That is one long-ass hiring process, though.

  141. 141 BethanyAnne Says:

    @Yutsano: I didn’t hear the details of the experiment, but it would be very easy to design it. Just get them to go into the elevator on the way up to the experiment that they expect to participate in. Tons of experiments have tricks like that. Where the real experiment is an “innocuous bystander” dropping some books after you’ve been exposed to negative words and taken a small test. The “test” results are thrown out; the real experiment is to see if the words affect whether you help pick up the books, that sort of thing.

  142. 142 Yutsano Says:

    @asiangrrlMN: August 24th according to teh Google. So it’ll be a long hot interesting summer in Arizona. Considering I was seeing ads for Grandpa in April, he’s scared shitless. I sooo want him to lose and lose badly. Mostly because a semi-decent Dem will kill Hayworth, but also to finally force that old fuck to retire to his seven houses.

    @BethanyAnne:Yeah, we did experiments like that, although usually the fake experiment also had a measurable data point as well just to ensure the legitimacy of the whole test. So you don’t really “throw it out” (you can’t, ethically, that’s deceptive) you just don’t make it the meat of your experiment.

  143. 143 asiangrrlMN Says:

    @Yutsano: No shit. Harumph. I am so tired of him. I bet he’ll still be on the teevee, though, even if he loses.

    @BethanyAnne: That’s pretty much how I remember it.

  144. 144 Mako Says:

    @asiangrrlMN:
    I’m pretty sure he’s resting on the right hand of god, that cat. He was a real trooper, a contender. Except we really haven’t sent him off yet. He used to love to play about in the brush out back and I’m thinking of having some friends over, i got the potato gun all i need is some fireworks and we can have a few toasts in his honour and launch him.

    Say whose your favourite guitarist? I like this guy.

  145. 145 Yutsano Says:

    @asiangrrlMN: Well duh, he’s our great white 43rd President according to Fox News. Or didn’t you get that memo?

  146. 146 asiangrrlMN Says:

    @Mako: That sounds like a pretty cool send-off. I do not have a favorite guitarist. I usually do not participate in the music threads, unless it’s bad eighties music.

    @Yutsano: I have been stridently ignoring that meme, thankyewverymuch.

  147. 147 Yutsano Says:

    @asiangrrlMN: When the Republican Party decided to double down on full-out insanity, I got pretty good at keeping track of what reality was vs. what they perceived it to be. It’s sort of like being a warped Buddhist, you have to let go of your senses to get to what’s really going on, only more or less in reverse. Zen turned on its ear, so to speak. It’s the only reason why I know Walnuts is all over TV, because in their world no way could a Communoislamofascist Kenyan fool enough American voters to win an election. Why yes, yes it does make my brain hurt, why do you ask?

  148. 148 asiangrrlMN Says:

    @Yutsano: I think you need to place a cool compress on your forehead, hon. You are delirious. I refuse to watch the Sunday talking babbleheads (that’s how I typed it, so that’s how i’m posting it). I prefer to live in my own little world.

    All right. Enough for one night. I have to ease myself back in. See y’all later. Nighte

  149. 149 Mako Says:

    @asiangrrlMN:
    Yeah me neither, unless they are obvious DougJ Rolling Stones troll threads. Say, let me ask you a question, say someone participated in an obvious troll thread and got sucked into an obvious troll would it be okay for that person to claim sexual harrasment?

  150. 150 Yutsano Says:

    @asiangrrlMN: Why oh why oh why did I go and watch videos on CNN.com? They sooo want this to be a huge loss for Obama and the Democrats and for this to be a huge Republican win even though in the only actual competitive match-up THE DEM WON BY EIGHT POINTS!! Ugh. My head really does hurt now. Me go find pillow, U have fun with troll.

  151. 151 Mako Says:

    @Yutsano:
    You’re a dude right? Cuz when i was hitting on you I thought you were a dude. Your name is male. If you are not a dude, forget it.

  152. 152 Mako Says:

    Can we wrap this thing up already? I don’t have all night.
    What we’ve learned: kidz today… sigh.

  153. 153 Mako Says:

    don’t forget to tip yer waitress the veal was delicious.
