YouTube Enters Kindergarten

I went to check out this video recommendation from wag in the comments, and saw that YouTube has a “5 Years Old” banner. Here’s the video, and an open thread in honor of that completely taken for granted, yet very young, site.

What a great invention. Old clips of Bud Powell in Paris, Tito Schipa singing live in the 30s, and on and on.

my two favorite things I ever found: Bob Dylan singing “Girl from the North Country” live, and this, the best performance of anything I’ve ever seen anywhere.

I thought the Blind Boys really killed this one on Season 1.

OT… that little rat terrier Sullivan really can’t let go of the Kagan’s Gay! thing, can he? post after post about it, even though he’s trying so hard to make them hypothetical and generic and not really about his burning desire to out her… it’s clear as day that he’s consumed by the question.

    what a lunatic

The entire World Wide Web is “very young” by my count.

Saw Tom Waits at the Last Resort in Athens GA during my wild days. What a singer. Guy had some ineffable quality that always enthralled me.

@cleek: What is his problem? I am finding him really annoying right now. What the fuck is it to him? Christ. Live and let live Andy. The world doesn’t owe you this information.

Let’s not forget that YouTube hosts more than music videos. (Warning: HD vid.)

I had to defriend a guy on Facebook after he said he hated Tom Waits.

Ah, it seems like only yesterday that renetto was annoying the crap out of me on the youtubes, and then Chris Crocker was telling all of us to leave Britney alone, and then of course we all got rickrolled about a thousand times. Good times? Well, OK.

YouTube didn’t really take off until Creighton started posting his Nola rants.

i think the tom waits version of the song used in the wire is the worst out of the 3 seasons i’ve seen. I like season 1s the best.

    Blasphemy, I know.

Maybe that’s 5 dog years. It’s amazing how central YouTube has become in such a short time—and not amazing at all how stupid media companies are still trying to stifle it.

I’ll see your Pavoratti, and raise you Elis Regina singing “Águas de Março”

@Bill E Pilgrim: It was a good performance, and I don’t even like opera. Passion is a beautiful thing.

    YouTube Enters Kindergarten

If only the commenters there were so mature.

Really, though, this doesn’t seem possible. It’s been a LONG five years.

So GREAT to see Waits at the height of his power. Thanks, John.

I hate Tom Waits as much as I hate The White Stripes.

I saw Waits about 2 years ago in a converted church in Nashville – the Ryman. It was probably the most religious I’ve ever felt in church.

Thank you for posting this. It makes my work day easier.

I was looking for some information a few weeks ago that led me to read my old gchat messages. The very first one began with this paraphrased exchange :
    J: Hi !
Me : Hi ! I’m looking at les inconnus on youtube !
    J: Wazzat ?
Me : a site where you can watch video clips.
    J: ok

I was completely baffled reading that when J’s response wasn’t “yeah DUH I meant that other thing”. Youtube is so central and fundamental now, even watching Treme I didn’t realize I’ve known about it only since May 2006.
