Just gave to Mother Jones. I also gave to support the Washington Independent. We’re going to continue to need Dave Weigel, Spencer Ackerman, and others like them in the new decade.

I must be a shitty libtard, cuz I dont know what Mother Jones is/was. Just post-Christmas is a really tough time to hit people up for cash.

And while you’re in a giving mood, don’t forget that the ACLU is having a financial crisis (though donations aren’t tax-deductible), and we need them to keep the pressure on to undo the civil liberties rollbacks of the Bush years.
Also a good idea to give to local organizations that help the homeless and hungry and others suffering in the current economic troubles.

I know the feeling.
2010’s GOTTA be better.

John, would you ever have thought, 5 years ago, that you would be urging your readers to donate to Mother Jones?
What a world.

Done, thanks to your re-tweet. Face: it’s investigative journalism, and they’ll happily take very small amounts, via PayPal, if that helps. (Mildly counterintuitive interface: you need to hit “update total” before you can log into PayPal.)

@Face: It’s the last day to put it into your ‘09 taxes. And Mother Jones is pretty vital, you should go check it out.

OT: Mixced news for President McCain this morning:
First the good news:
But alas then comes this sadness: Nebraska 33, Arizona 0.

@Parole Officer Burke: WOW! he even threw in a Chappaquidick reference in his list.
Angry GOP John was no bueno.

@asiangrrlMN: Alas, it’s on facebook, and I just can’t bring myself to register, being pretty damn antisocial and all.

@jeffreyw: I’m on it, only to show my nieces that I’m not a fossil. The good part: a couple of good friends from way back found me. The bad part: all the people from high school that wouldn’t speak to me then are now friending me. Ugh.

OT, and from previous thread, but I made a mockup of what I think a Balloon Juice t-shirt could look like. John should sell them on the site to raise money and help his minions show their pride.
Disclaimer: done only to spur discussion. If john wants me to take it down because of copyright issues, I will. I lay no claim to the design if John wants to use it.

You should add Tunch to the balloon then have the balloon scraping along the ground. Maybe a caption- John Cole, The Original Balloon Boy

I should add that I think the back should contain the catch phrase: “Consistently wrong since 2002.”

@Parole Officer Burke: Ouch, that one stings. Things like this are, I think, my #2 reason why I don’t blog (#1 being I just don’t have enough interesting shit to say).
But to lighten the mood a bit, go back one entry, and we got a post about Bob Barker. I think John was pretty spot on with that one.

Just to put something snappy on the back. It could be on the front, but it would be nice to have something on the back.

@Corner Stone: If we turn this thread into a game of perusing the archives, John is so going to kill us.

@Sentient Puddle: I don’t normally have time to peruse them so when someone posts a link I scan it for shiggles.
But I think you’ve got a great point. Let’s mercilessly attack the archives for exquisite nutpicks. It would be a fitting end to 2009.

So many good causes that need money right now! I’m always torn between donating to orgs that directly pursue liberal goals and donating to liberal media orgs. I tend to lean toward those who directly pursue the goals, but media needs it too.
Does anyone have an overall strategy or rule that they find useful when determining who to give money to?

You know what’s really good? Drinking something over pebble ice instead of ice cubes. You know the kind of little round pebble ice, kind of like what Sonic has? It makes everything taste better.

@John Cole: That would be ok as long as you somehow backup all the threads with DougJ either commenting as himself or spoofing.
History will certainly condemn you if you wipe out the collected works by one of the first true online author geniuses in the nascent 21st century.

@KCinDC: I second that about the ACLU. They’ve kicked tyrant ass for decades, and aren’t letting up now. Please donate today. You can also make tax-deductible donations to the ACLU Foundation—which supports litigation but not lobbying—at the same place.
