As I’m reading this, Maddow’s doing a segment on “the Family”. After a day like today, this is the one-two knockout punch. This country is utterly, truly fucked.

Aside from the Technology Fail, I don’t really see the point. I use URL shorteners when I want to send someone a gazillion-character URL inside what I hope is a readable message. URL shortening and pissing off someone who sees my message seems incompatible.

I’m pretty sure that failed because the servers are overloaded w DFH bloggers running their URLs.

I saw it about an hour or so ago from Oliver Willis. This one is going viral. As I said to him, an insulting URL shoretnere is sure to destroy teh left. We’re doomed.

    @John Cole:

I wiki’d it, and though Brownie made more sense in your larger point of Republican ineptitude, I thought you were going for some thinly veiled NFL history reference. Thinking “Wow, that Tunch/Ochocinco curse has really frayed Mr. Cole.”

My oldest is making me relive 1984. I had to dig up the following quote on Doublethink:

To know and not to know, to be conscious of complete truthfulness while telling carefully constructed lies, to hold simultaneously two opinions which canceled out, knowing them to be contradictory and believing in both of them, to use logic against logic, to repudiate morality while laying claim to it, to believe that democracy was impossible and that the Party was the guardian of democracy, to forget, whatever it was necessary to forget, then to draw it back into memory again at the moment when it was needed, and then promptly to forget it again, and above all, to apply the same process to the process itself—that was the ultimate subtlety; consciously to induce unconsciousness, and then, once again, to become unconscious of the act of hypnosis you had just performed. Even to understand the word ‘doublethink’ involved the use of doublethink.

    George Orwell could time travel.

I know this is totally OT and probably not a very popular thing to say tonight that feelings are so raw. But this Booman post I think reminds us all how we got here. Merely a month ago Reid pushed for a PO in the Senate bill and a lot of people made him the hero and vilified the WH for pointing out to Reid that doing the bill this way (PO up front instead of attached in conference) would create the wrong dynamic. Reid said he knew what he was doing (remember when he said Lieberman would not be a problem?) Fast forward—it turns out Reid had no votes, had no clue how to play strategically and he killed the ability to attach the PO in conference. But all we will hear now, having forgotten the warning that came from the WH about the danger of putting the PO up front instead of in conference, is how this is Rahm or Obama’s fault when in truth Reid alone promised he would have the votes when he never did. I know, I know sausage making and all that but for all the spinelessness of the Dem caucus, this was a total unforced error by front-loading the issue of the PO at the most vulnerable time.

This is one of the most absurd things I’ve seen in a while. Not infuriating disgusting revolting atrocious, because that would be Joe Lieberman. Obviously.

But this…first of all, it’s been discussed to death, but for the life of me, I will never under stand the “YEAH, BUT IT PISSES OFF LIBERALS!” thing. I mean, do they really think a URL shortener is going to piss off liberals? Who are these so easily aggrieved liberals that would take affront to a URL shortener? And why are you making URL shorteners a part of your long-term strategy to Regain Power From The American Electorate? That does not seem effective to me, but what do I know about running competent national political organizations? Probably about as much as the clowns who made this, that’s how much.

And the actual site itself. “Making Long URLs…Conservative.” That is the actual slogan for this thing? Making long URLs…conservative. Wow. Who is the wunderkind that signed off on this masterstroke of human intellect? Not to mention that the picture on this site—oh wow, the picture. Yikes.—is of children riding on a carousel, which does not sound bad when you first hear the idea. But when you see the idea, in real life—with your eyes—that same wunderkind decided to use a picture of a carousel that featured a ride that looks like the Goatse.cx man. In the most prominent part of the picture.

And for those of you not aware of all internet traditions, you can Google that term at your own peril. There’s a reason I didn’t link to the wiki article; I don’t want that blood on my hands.

There’s just so much fail here.

    “Making Long URLs…Conservative.”

One is that they are totally hoocoodanode about the possibility of their brand being hijacked for hilarious and nefarious purposes.

What just struck me is that Them there URLs be too long for my blunt, thick head so I’m agin’ it. GOPers too dumb to surf net.

THEN, it became innuendo. Making longer things shorter, with “conservative” becoming a substitute for “shorter” aka I have a tiny dick or GOP = bonerkiller a la “Republican women, we make heterosexual men…conservative.”

    “Hey buddy, I’m a conservative!”
    “[snort] I bet you are!”

@South of I-10: It was delish, I would caution y’all if you follow the recipe (link in the comments on the set) it will be pretty hot. I roughly doubled the recipe which called for 4 tablespoons of the seasoning mix (link also in the comments), I tossed in 2 and a half, then thought to taste it. I had put in plenty. 8 tbsps would have had Mrs J squawkin. LOL
