On the other hand, lots of things make it harder for the Secret Service to do their job. Protesting is much harder on the Secret Service—almost certainly harder than one guy openly carrying a gun, because the protesters are a crowd of people who have to be watched constantly for suspicious movements. Should we ban protesting? Or force the people who do it off the premises and into a park eight blocks away?

Samuel’s doing very, very well. He’s an awesome baby—very easygoing and a great sleeper. Last night, we both slept from 10pm to 1:30am, then from 2am to 5:30am, and then from about 6am to almost 9am. So I’ve been getting a very enviable amount of sleep for a new mom. We went for a walk today, trying him out in the stroller for the first time, and it went very well.

So far, so good, anyway. We’ll see what tomorrow brings.

Think about the crazies at these town hall meetings and the freepers, etc. they all talk a big game about revolution and taking down the commies, fascists, etc. Their goal is power, and they can’t see anyone else having any other goal (like, say, improving the lot of humanity). @Comrade Luke: Really basic? Okay, easier just to tell you. Make a stock. Out of anything you want. Chicken stock, for example (saffron adds a nice touch). Leave it simmering on one burner. Make sure to have extra. You must not run out before the risotto is finished. Heat a broad, moderately deep pan on a burner on the high side of medium. Add a generous pour of olive oil. Sweat finely chopped onions in it. Pour in a cup of arborio rice and stir it until a nutty aroma rises from it (this is the key key key step that makes the dish risotto rather than muck). Pour in your stock liquid to just cover the rice and stir. Do not stop stirring, ever. When that liquid is just about gone, add another half cup of stock. Keep stirring. Repeat until the white cores of the rice are just about to vanish. Taste test (it should be al dente). Serve immediately.

Butter is not a common ingredient from what I know, but it’s your kitchen and you rule there. My experience is with just a little olive oil, the dish is rich as hell already.

My favorite is butternut squash risotto. Bake up a squash and add the scooped out flesh when you add the first liquid.

Here’s a risotto recipe I like from Jamie Oliver.

It’s pretty basic. The only “non-stock” things are the onion and celery—maybe the garlic. (And I guess you could consider the vermouth or white wine non-basic.) You could substitute your ingredients for those and do all right with this recipe.

I like Oliver a lot, and he has a sort of surprising (to me) affinity for Italian cuisine. His book Jamie’s Italy is very good. Not fussy, and good results.

My trick with the squash, which would work for the pumpkin too, is to roast the seeds with some vege oil and salt in the toaster oven, and garnish the top of the risotto with them. Tasty, and a nice texture contrast.

I call it risotto, but I use jasmine rice just for the hell of it. I agree with the half butter half olive oil comment previously mentioned. Stir the rice about in the mixture until it’s ready, then splash in a few cups of white wine, keep stirring and add stock as needed. Extra ingredients make the dish interesting, I favor button mushrooms.

OT Protip: Keep the kitteh out of the booze.

You can probably get an idea about how much stock per cup of rice from. Suffice to say, the rice with expand way more than you imagine. Unless you have a dinner party, start small.

Oh, and you will need some other recipes for the next day. Leftover risotto omlettes are amazing. Add the rice while the egg is very runny still, so it embeds and warms up from the fridge.

And also deep fried risotto balls. Italian bar food specialty. You crack an egg into the leftovers and mix, roll the risotto into a ball about the size of your cupped hand, press a cube of ham into the center, roll in egg and bread crumbs and drop into a deep frier until brown. You can be half dead from starvation and two of these will make you full like thanksgiving.

I still have plenty, but the male Rufous’s and Adult Caliopes have left. I’ve gone thru almost 10 pounds of Pure Cane Sugar just since this past weekend. They get really frenetic until about mid September when they start to thin out. By October they are pretty much gone with a few stragglers.

I think its nice that Obama has decided to use the NEA to “commission” works that help his agenda. I think for the first piece they should commission a statue of evil right wingers pissing all over Kennedy’s grave as an expression of how important health care reform is.

Folks say it was just as crazy when Clinton was presnit, and it was in a lot of ways, but something seems different and more ominous now.

By the time the WSJ started hawking the “Mena papers”, claiming Clinton was personally responsible for international drug-runners murdering dozens or hundreds of people when he was Arkansas’ governor, the Dow Jones Average was skyrocketing and Clinton’s administration was on the way to eliminating the national debt. So the average Low Information Voter, bless his narrow little mind, treated the whole Clenis “scandal” the same way people treat Michael Jackson’s death—as a diversion. Today, the economy is in the tank, everyone who hasn’t already lost their job is afraid they’ll be next, and those same Low Info people are looking for a scapegoat.

I was a teenager during the Watergate years, and that’s what the current level of general random paranoia and meanness reminds me of, actually. Try to take comfort in the fact that we survived Nixon, and even Kissinger.
