If a Republican senator has to speak at Kennedy’s funeral, it should at least be a Republican who voted in favor of Sotomayor. McCain repeated the stupid talking points about Sotomayor when announcing his intention to vote against her. He also accused Obama of being a traitor because he’d rather “lose a war than lose an election”.

McCain should have been censured for his disgusting remarks questioning Obama’s patriotism and should have been forced to deliver an apology to Obama from the floor of the Senate. Instead, the MSM continues to drool over this unrepentant prick.

Tonight, red snapper caught caught recently in the gulf (fresh, fresh, and yummy), fresh green beans, and a potato (btw, if you like the skin, which is about all I like, poke a bunch of holes in said potato, rub olive oil on it and bake it at 400 degrees for about an hour. The skin is thus delicious.).

    My Last Word on Guns

Jason Zengerle indicates that the real point is that openly carrying weapons at a protest makes it harder for the Secret Service to do their job. Probably. On the other hand, lots of things make it harder for the Secret Service to do their job. Protesting is much harder on the Secret Service—almost certainly harder than one guy openly carrying a gun, because the protesters are a crowd of people who have to be watched constantly for suspicious movements. Should we ban protesting? Or force the people who do it off the premises and into a park eight blocks away?

See, simple when you wank it the right way.

@Demo Woman: I agree that it would be nice if McCain left the political scene, but he was a longtime personal friend of Teddy Kennedy’s, and under the Irish tradition, entitled to make a bad-faith spectacle of himself at Teddy’s funeral. Who knows, perhaps he’ll take the opportunity to recant his sins and announce that he’s going to vote in favor of Obama’s HCR bill. Or, perhaps more realistically, he’ll have achieved a state of drunken rage where he’ll start ranting a version of Palin’s word-salad with extra Naval-quality obscenities, before wetting himself on-camera and falling face-forward into the casket.

Besides, it beats the horror of listening to John Boehner or that sociopath Justice Roberts puling pieties as the “official” Rethuglican representative, right?

And it has just gotten even more surreal since Ted’s passing, with all indications of getting more and more into free associative narratives of crazy with our opponents.

Sometimes I think it is all the right wing has left but to shat on the national dialogue to where people just give up and give them what they want. Which of course is and always has been Power.

I really don’t know what to make of it, and making compulsive jokes about everything is a way to cope, I guess.

Kay just gave me an idea that I think may actually explain a lot of this crazy. The wingnuts are projecting. They think about what they would do if they were able to run the government the way they want, and then assuming that the democrats are going to do exactly that.

Think about the crazies at these town hall meetings and the freepers, etc. they all talk a big game about revolution and taking down the commies, fascists, etc. Their goal is power, and they can’t see anyone else having any other goal (like, say, improving the lot of humanity). So they automatically assume that if progressives are in power, their goal will be to screw the other side. It’s a zero sum game in their minds. My way or the highway.

Most people stopped paying attention but the last two months in Afghanistan have been the worst since the war started. In addition, the war has been widened under the radar. Now for the Proustian scent of Vietnam madelaine:

WASHINGTON — Contrary to the insistence of Pentagon officials this week that they are not rating the work of reporters covering U.S. forces in Afghanistan, Stars and Stripes has obtained documents that prove that reporters’ coverage is being graded as “positive,” “neutral” or “negative.”
Moreover, the documents — recent confidential profiles of the work of individual reporters prepared by a Pentagon contractor — indicate that the ratings are intended to help Pentagon image-makers manipulate the types of stories that reporters produce while they are embedded with U.S. troops in Afghanistan.

You’re just the opposite of me in this regard. If I were unable to eat, the last thing I’d want to read about was people describing meals they enjoyed. Liked your take on the music question from late last night.

Curious to get your take on how Democrats should respond to Rush Limbaugh’s diatribe about Ted Kennedy’s death being exploited to pass a heath care bill:

Rush Limbaugh: “We’re told today how Ted Kennedy was a “uniter” and how he was a legislator. You know what? I actually want them to put Ted Kennedy’s name on the health care bill. I want ‘em to do it. The DC elite just don’t get it. In fact, they don’t get the reaction to the coverage out there. They are in a totally different world from the rest of this country. I think one of the easiest, sure-fire ways to defeat the health care bill is to put his name on it. So I officially today, as host—only host—on the Excellence in Broadcasting Network, suggest and join my friends on the Democrat side of the aisle: “Yes, please name Obamacare after Ted Kennedy. Please do so. It’s only appropriate. Do it this week! Do it during the funeral. Do it during the memorial service. Do it while the nation’s attention is riveted.” Obama, with health care, is trying to build a monument to himself in Washington. Obama wants to be FDR the Second. He wants to be the black FDR. And put Teddy Kennedy’s name on it…? (chuckles) Yeah, his ego is such that that might stand in his way. That’s a good question. Would Obama go along with it being called Kennedycare, the Ted Kennedy Memorial Health Care Reform Act and blah, blah?... (interruption) If you put Kennedy’s name on the bill, when the thing turns into a disaster you blame him and there’s nothing he can do about it. “Oh, it’s the Ted Kennedy bill. It’s all screwed up. I had nothing to do with that bill. It’s the Ted Kennedy bill. We did that in honor of Senator Kennedy. That’s why it’s screwed up.” (chuckles) Well, that’s a great question, Stewart. Obama is narcissist enough to be concerned about that. Speaking of naming the bill under Ted Kennedy, we have a State-Run Media montage here, day two: pushing health care for Kennedy. Here we have John King of CNN, Jessica Yellin of CNN, Roger Simon of Politico, David Gregory at NBC, David “Rodham” Gergen at CNN, Brian Williams of NBC, Kelly O’Donnell at NBC, and Kiran Chetry at CNN all talking about the passing of Senator Kennedy and health care reform.”

Last month, it was reported that McCain’s staffers suggested Palin use the line that Obama was “palling around with terrorists”

About a week ago, there was a wire story reporting that McCain has been voting along strict party lines about 95% since election day. It’s obvious he’s doing everything possible to fuck Obama up.

  138. Comrade Darkness - August 28, 2009 | 12:19 am · Link

@Comrade Luke: Really basic? Okay, easier just to tell you. Make a stock. Out of anything you want. Chicken stock, for example (saffron adds a nice touch). Leave it simmering on one burner. Make sure to have extra. You must not run out before the risotto is finished. Heat a broad, moderately deep pan on a burner on the high side of medium. Add a generous pour of olive oil. Sweat finely chopped onions in it. Pour in a cup of arborio rice and stir it until a nutty aroma rises from it (this is the key key key step that makes the dish risotto rather than muck). Pour in your stock liquid to just cover the rice and stir. Do not stop stirring, ever. When that liquid is just about gone, add another half cup of stock. Keep stirring. Repeat until the white cores of the rice are just about to vanish. Taste test (it should be al dente). Serve immediately.

Butter is not a common ingredient from what I know, but it’s your kitchen and you rule there. My experience is with just a little olive oil, the dish is rich as hell already.

My favorite is butternut squash risotto. Bake up a squash and add the scooped out flesh when you add the first liquid.

It’s pretty basic. The only “non-stock” things are the onion and celery—maybe the garlic. (And I guess you could consider the vermouth or white wine non-basic.) You could substitute your ingredients for those and do all right with this recipe.

I like Oliver a lot, and he has a sort of surprising (to me) affinity for Italian cuisine. His book Jamie’s Italy is very good. Not fussy, and good results.

I call it risotto, but I use jasmine rice just for the hell of it. I agree with the half butter half olive oil comment previously mentioned. Stir the rice about in the mixture until it’s ready, then splash in a few cups of white wine, keep stirring and add stock as needed. Extra ingredients make the dish interesting, I favor button mushrooms.

OT Protip: Keep the kitteh out of the booze.

@Comrade Luke: I noticed after posting that you said you wanted amounts, and I’m thinking, gah, I don’t know the amounts. I just use the “right amount,” which isn’t very useful to you. You can probably get an idea about how much stock per cup of rice from. Suffice to say, the rice with expand way more than you imagine. Unless you have a dinner party, start small.

Oh, and you will need some other recipes for the next day. Leftover risotto omlettes are amazing. Add the rice while the egg is very runny still, so it embeds and warms up from the fridge.

And also deep fried risotto balls. Italian bar food specialty. You crack an egg into the leftovers and mix, roll the risotto into a ball about the size of your cupped hand, press a cube of ham into the center, roll in egg and bread crumbs and drop into a deep frier until brown. You can be half dead from starvation and two of these will make you full like thanksgiving.

    Gah, must go find snack…

Since lots of y’all have kitties, I thought I’d ask: does anyone have recommendations for a good vacuum cleaner? Specifically, one that does a good job with pet hair and litter? Despite the fact that the refrigerator doesn’t close, the oven door can’t be opened all the way, the roof leaks, the bathroom sink leaks, and the grout’s a memory in the shower, our apartment management has told us our unit is in “unacceptable condition” because there was a lot of cat litter on the floor during the recent inspection.

“Should we ban protesting? Or force the people who do it off the premises and into a park eight blocks away?”

During the 2004 Republican national convention in NYC, McArdle suggested that protesters should be “beaten with two-by-fours” because, once herded safely into the ‘protest pens’, they interfered with McArdle’s Starbucks-seeking experience. When readers protested this, she claimed she “didn’t really know” what a 2×4 was. Perhaps she can suggest a compromise—gun carriers will be permitted outside presidential venues, but only after a select cadre of Secret Service agents has beaten them with two-by-fours.

FYI, since you live in MA, where is Kerry?

Haven’t seen him since the media caught him on camera coming out of the Hyannisport house the morning after Kennedy died. Poor man looked absolutely gutted—Teddy had been his mentor as a well as a personal friend. Politics is always a blood sport around here, and the maneuvering to fill the open Senate seat is going to be particularly insane, because the Democratic legislature passed a no-appointment-only-election law five years ago to keep then-Governor Romney from appointing a Republican to hopefully-President-Kerry’s seat, and that law is now threatening to leave Boston’s huge medical industry with only one vote during this Fall’s Health Care Reform battle. Apart from his personal grief, I suspect our new Senior Senator Kerry is staying under wraps so as not to stir up the Rethuglicans, instate and national clans both.

Folks say it was just as crazy when Clinton was presnit, and it was in a lot of ways, but something seems different and more ominous now.

By the time the WSJ started hawking the “Mena papers”, claiming Clinton was personally responsible for international drug-runners murdering dozens or hundreds of people when he was Arkansas’ governor, the Dow Jones Average was skyrocketing and Clinton’s administration was on the way to eliminating the national debt. So the average Low Information Voter, bless his narrow little mind, treated the whole Clenis “scandal” the same way people treat Michael Jackson’s death—as a diversion. Today, the economy is in the tank, everyone who hasn’t already lost their job is afraid they’ll be next, and those same Low Info people are looking for a scapegoat.

I was a teenager during the Watergate years, and that’s what the current level of general random paranoia and meanness reminds me of, actually. Try to take comfort in the fact that we survived Nixon, and even Kissinger.
