The Moose Is Loose

I seriously do not understand this woman: Gov. Sarah Palin resigned here Sunday with a blast at the media that reflected the frustrations that led her to leave office a year-and-a-half before her term expired. But speaking in a style that her fans see as plain talk and her detractors consider disjointed, she offered almost [...]

The first openly birther Senator

It’s James Inhofe, just as you’d expect: “They have a point,” he said of the birthers. “I don’t discourage it. ... But I’m going to pursue defeating [Obama] on things that I think are very destructive to America.” I wonder now long people like Greg Pollowitz can keep pretending the media is only keeping this [...]

Funny juxtaposition

It was funny to read this (via Atrios) right after discussing Alessandra Stanley’s fact-checking woes: The so-called citizen journalism of most blogs is an affront to those of us who believe reporting and attribution must precede publication. Fact-checking is tedious; it often derails juicy rumor and deflates many a story. Update. I should have mentioned, [...]

A whole lot of wrong in one place

A pretty remarkable Times correction of an Alessandra Stanley piece (from CJR via O-Dub): An appraisal on Saturday about Walter Cronkite’s career included a number of errors. In some copies, it misstated the date that the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was killed and referred incorrectly to Mr. Cronkite’s coverage of D-Day. Dr. King [...]

Congrats to Contador

Contador wins the Tour de France, with Armstrong placing a respectable second third. I actually watched a lot more of this Tour than previous ones, the main reason being that versus was showing it in HD, and I could watch it while I was riding the $500.00 towel rack (that is what we call the [...]

F-22 jet can shoot homosexual agenda down in flames

That must be the best Human Events email subject heading ever. Here’s the full email. Update. Per the comments, it’s worth noting that, historically, fighter jets haven’t had much success stopping the homosexual agenda.

Rich on Cronkite

This nails it: When McNamara died this month, many recalled his status as Exhibit A of what David Halberstam labeled “the best and the brightest,” the brilliant and arrogant Kennedy-Johnson team that blundered into a quagmire. Far less was said about how McNamara, at his height, wielded that image to spin a dazzled Washington press [...]

Ezra Klein opinion piece

Ezra Klein has a great piece comparing Clintoncare with what is being proposed now. I had no idea that most people were on something other than managed care before the 90s. I really recommend reading Ezra’s piece.

The pause that refreshes in the corridors of power

I’m not an optimist. I think that in some general sense we’re fucked as a society. Our public dialog is mind-numblingly stupid and the likely end result of that will be second-world status, unless the rest of the world is as screwed up as we are, and in that case, things will be even worse. [...]

Movie Night

Saw the Watchmen on DVD tonight. Much darker than I expected, but still a good flick. Was pretty surprised to see Moocher from Breaking Away (one of my all time favorite movies- “Don’t forget to punch the clock, shorty!”) was Rorschach. Push is next.

Table for Three, Serving Fail

At what point do they just say to hell with it and give up: If a three-way discussion among Republican pundits on “The Early Show Saturday Edition” is any indication, more of the same—she’ll remain as controversial and passion-provoking rod as ever. Author and right-wing firebrand Ann Coulter, GOP strategist Bay Buchanan, and NewMajority.com founder [...]

Saturday Night Open Thread

Made some pretty damned amazing hot sausage sandwiches for dinner, and everything was fresh from the farmer’s market. Haven’t had a hot sausage sandwich in forever, but it was really good and easy to make. BTW- how many of you dog owners have ever heard of Merrick’s? Any comments on it?

I love a man in a uniform

There’s some interesting but not very surprising commentary on Sarah Palin from some Republican legislators: “The only thing she seemed interested in at that point was talking about she was dealt with unfairly in the press,” Gara said. State Rep. Jay Ramras, a Republican and chairman of the state House Judiciary Committee, put it simply: [...]

Question: Is it possible to be too cynical with the Bush crowd? Answer: No. I give up.

More Bleg

With regret, I finally had to admit that I probably will not buy the Olympus E-P1. Between this review and the $800 tag it just does not seem like a sensible choice right now. However, I still need to replace the old FE2. Legacy glass is not an issue for me. Rather, the most important [...]
